Underwater refers to the region below the surface of water where the water exists in a natural feature (called a body of water) such as an ocean, sea, lake, pond, or river.
Three quarters of the planet Earth is covered by water. A majority of the planet's solid surface is abyssal plain, at depths between 4,000 and 5,500 metres (13,100 and 18,000 ft) below the surface of the oceans. The solid surface location on the planet closest to the centre of the orb is the Challenger Deep, located in the Mariana Trench at a depth of 10,924 metres (35,840 ft). Although a number of human activities are conducted underwater—such as research, scuba diving for work or recreation, or even underwater warfare with submarines, this very extensive environment on planet Earth is hostile to humans in many ways and therefore little explored. But it can be explored by sonar, or more directly via manned or autonomous submersibles. The ocean floors have been surveyed via sonar to at least a coarse resolution; particularly-strategic areas have been mapped in detail, in the name of detecting enemy submarines, or aiding friendly ones, though the resulting maps may still be classified.

From underwater whirlpools, to a jellyfish that looks just like Darth Vader, these are 11 WEIRD Undersea Discoveries ! The Baltic Sea Anomaly -- this object was discovered by a Swedish diving team on the floor of the northern Baltic Sea in 2011. This is actually a 3-D interpretation of the anomaly created by artist Hauke Vaut, based on reports that described the formation as being set on a pillar and includes a structure resembling a staircase that leads to a dark hole. Further details gathered from sonar images stated the formation was around 60 meters in diameter … and stands on a 8-meter pillar … and is located at a depth of 295 feet. You can see some of those images from Snopes.com … From above, the structure even looks like the Millennium Falcon! There were also claims that th...
The Future of Undersea Warfare, The Virginia class, also known as the SSN-774 class, is a class of nuclear-powered fast attack #submarines (hull classification symbol SSN) in service with the United States Navy. The submarines are designed for a broad spectrum of open-ocean and littoral (shallow coastal water) missions. They were conceived as a less expensive alternative to the Seawolf-class attack submarines, designed during the Cold War era. They are replacing older Los Angeles-class submarines, many of which have already been decommissioned. Virginia-class submarines will be acquired through 2043, and are expected to remain in service past 2060. Based on recent updates to the designs, some of the Virginia-class submarines are expected to still be in service in 2070. Video link: https:/...

Faced with increased acidity, less oxygen and warming temperatures, what does the future hold for the planet's oceans? Bellow the Wave of the Pacific Realm o. The Mariana Trench or Marianas Trench is the deepest part of the world's oceans. It is located in the western Pacific Ocean, to the east of the Mariana Islan. Maug, one of the three islands within the Islands Unit of the Mariana Trench Marine National Monument, is the second northernmost island in the Marianas arch. Scientists have discovered what they call a lost world more than 2000 metres below the surface in the Southern Ocean, near Antarctica. . Report by Mark Mo.
Just off the coast of Florida, 17 metres below the surface, lies Aquarius - the world's only operating undersea laboratory. Scientists can live in Aquarius for up to two weeks, giving them plenty of time to study the coral reef community. But with budget struggles ahead, the US Congress may withdraw funding for the lab. Mark Schrope dived down to meet the researchers who are trying to save this iconic underwater base. Every time you visit a web page or send an email, data is being sent and received through an intricate cable system that stretches around the globe. Since the 1850s, we've been laying cables across oceans to become better connected. Today, there are hundreds of thousands of miles of fiber optic cables constantly transmitting data between nations. Google is reinforcing its underwater fibre-optic cables to protect against future shark attacks Google is reinforcing its private underwater fibre-optic cables with an extra layer of protective material in order to protect its 100,000 miles of cables from sharks. Sharks and other fish are attracted to the cables, thought by some to be due to the electromagnetic signals emitted by the lines, but they are easily damaged. The cables already have existing protective materials designed to shelter them from the various dangers of the environment, but will now be coated with a 'Kevlar-like' material to provide even more protection. Fibre-optic cables are made of strands of glass, and are thus much less durable than copper cables. Google wants to prevent its own cables from sustaining further d...
