Recycling is the process of converting waste materials into reusable objects to prevent waste of potentially useful materials, reduce the consumption of fresh raw materials, energy usage, air pollution (from incineration) and water pollution (from landfilling) by decreasing the need for "conventional" waste disposal and lowering greenhouse gas emissions compared to plastic production. Recycling is a key component of modern waste reduction and is the third component of the "Reduce, Reuse and Recycle" waste hierarchy.
There are some ISO standards related to recycling such as ISO 15270:2008 for plastics waste and ISO 14001:2004 for environmental management control of recycling practice.
Recyclable materials include many kinds of glass, paper, metal, plastic, tires, textiles and electronics. The composting or other reuse of biodegradable waste—such as food or garden waste—is also considered recycling. Materials to be recycled are either brought to a collection centre or picked up from the curbside, then sorted, cleaned and reprocessed into new materials destined for manufacturing.

We have been in need of a box for our recycling drawer. I took inspiration from the paper bags that we have been using and made a box from very thin plywood. The box has a serrated top edge and clean details like a paper bag. The corners are mitered and held together with biscuits, and the bottom is set in a rabbet. CarbonLite is the world's largest "bottle-to-bottle" plastic recycling plant in Riverside, Calif. "SoCal Connected" takes a look inside the state-of-the-art facility where billions of plastic bottles are churned on an annual basis. The process involves transforming old plastic bottles into PET pellets and flakes in order to produce new plastic bottles. The bottles are required to go through metal detectors, a special "prewash" phase, and a label-removing facility before they can become shiny, brand new pellets. Even though your plastic water bottle might not weigh as much, a square bale of plastic bottles can weigh more than 1,300 pounds, as Derrick Shore reveals in this segment of "SoCal Connected." Find out more about commercial waste recycling in Devon at http://www.dcw.co.uk Twitter - http://twitter.com/dcw_uk Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/pages/Devon-Contract-Waste TRANSCRIPT Up until now businesses have had to sort all their rubbish for recycling but many didn't have the time, which is why much of it ended up in landfill. However, help is now at hand! In Exeter, there is a place called Envirohub, which is the base for Devon Contract Waste. This company has started a 'Zero to Landfill' campaign because they would like to see everything recycled so landfill wouldn't be needed anymore. To help with this, they have spent over four million pounds on a fantastic new waste sorting machine which means businesses won't have to sort their rubbish anymore. This machine is huge: it...

DIY recycling projects are always cool, especially when you can turn your trash into something new and useful. We’ve written posts about ways to recycle before, but it turns out there’s so much that you can do with recycle plastic bottles that they deserved their own post. The PET plastic that most plastic beverage bottles are made of is a fairly useful material – it’s resilient, flexible, transparent and food safe. As such, there are probably countless applications for these bottles that will give Subscibe Now 6sigmapackers.com

Car Recycling – Did you know that cars can be recycled? Join Curiosity Quest Goes Green host, Joel Greene as he witnesses the massive power of a car crusher! We begin at a facility that collects old cars. The first step is to pick them up with a huge claw and dump them onto a conveyor belt where they get fed into a giant blender that reduces a vehicle down to chunks of scrap. These scrap pieces are then separated out to various piles of metals, plastics, glass, etc. Next, Greene follows the metal to a steel mill next door, as he watches the most visual process of smelting metal and turning it into liquid lava. In this DVD, we learn what all the scrap metal from old cars can become.

Waste Diversion | Recycling for Sustainable Development | Nature Documentary Films Waste diversion or landfill diversion is the process of diverting waste from landfills. The success of landfill diversion can be measured by comparison of the size of the landfill from one year to the next. If the landfill grows minimally or remains the same, then policies covering landfill diversion are successful. For example, currently in the United States there are 3000 landfills.[1] A measure of the success of landfill diversion would be if that number remains the same or is reduced. In 2009, it was recorded that the national average of landfill diversion in the United States was 33.8%, while San Francisco had implemented the most effective policies and had recorded a landfill diversion rate of 77%.[2]...

Did you know that every month, we throw out enough glass bottles and jars to fill a giant skyscraper? Join Curiosity Quest Goes Green host, Joel Greene on this quest to find out how glass bottles are recycled. This DVD begins at a plant that collects millions of glass bottles, where Greene learns how they are separated out and witnesses how they get broken and crushed. From there they are trucked out to one of the largest glass manufacturers in the world and Greene sees how all the bottles we recycle turn into “cullet” and become part of a recipe for brand new bottles. During the process you will see how the “cullet” and other ingredients are melted down into a river of molten hot lava and very quickly get pressed into a mold to become a new bottle. The best thing is that this proces...

if you meet a long forgotten friend
and he takes you in his arms and smiles
and he tells you long forgotten tales
and he takes you home for a nightride
and he begs you, please, stay here with me
in the end you agree
remember: you're just being recycled
so everything you say
somebody else said it before you
and everything you do
somebody else just did it like you
and the man in the lab just grins and says
holding up a tiny can with a sperm
remember: you're just being recycled

there stands a steamboat in the sun
i rised my eyes and stared into that paralyzing light
but god had left the iron skies
this day will last forever, we pushed the final buttons
