In the Dark (Grateful Dead album)

In the Dark is the 12th studio album by the Grateful Dead. It was recorded in one week in January 1987, and originally released on July 6, 1987.

In the Dark was the band's first album in six years, and its first studio album since 1980's Go to Heaven. It became unexpectedly popular, achieving double platinum certification in the U.S. It reached #6 on the Billboard 200 chart, the Grateful Dead's only top ten album. The peppy "Touch of Grey" peaked at #9 on the Billboard Hot 100, the band's only top forty single; it also became a frequently played music video on MTV. "Hell in a Bucket" and "Throwing Stones" also achieved significant album-oriented rock radio airplay.

Production

Most of the songs on this album had been played by the Dead since 1982 or 1983, which gave them a five-year edge on perfecting these songs for this album. After the critically panned Go to Heaven, which contained songs that were mostly under a year old, the maturity of In the Dark was significantly more appreciated.

The Dark (Metal Church album)

The Dark is the second full-length album released by Metal Church. It was released on 6 October 1986 and was the last album featuring the group's classic lineup of David Wayne, Kurdt Vanderhoof, Kirk Arrington, Duke Erickson, and Craig Wells. 1999's Masterpeace album reunited the former four, with John Marshall replacing Wells.

Album information

The Dark talks of somber themes, such as assassination, death, struggle, rituals, and the supernatural: the lyrics from "Line of Death", for example, were based on Libyan hostilities in the Gulf of Sidra. "Watch the Children Pray" became the band's first music video. The album was dedicated to the late Metallica bassist Cliff Burton, who died nine days before its release. In order to promote The Dark, Metal Church supported Metallica and Anthrax on the Damage, Inc. Tour. They also opened for King Diamond.

"Ton of Bricks" appears as the opening track in the Charlie Sheen movie No Man's Land.

Reception

Reviews for The Dark have been mostly positive. Allmusic's Eduardo Rivadavia awards the album two-and-a-half stars out of five, and states that it "contained some of the group's best material." In 2005, the album was ranked number 389 in Rock Hard magazine's book of The 500 Greatest Rock & Metal Albums of All Time.

Speed is a 2007 Bollywood action thriller film directed by Vikram Bhatt and produced by Harry Baweja. The film features an ensemble cast of Zayed Khan, Urmila Matondkar, Sanjay Suri, Aftab Shivdasani, Aashish Chaudhary and Tanushree Dutta in lead roles. It released on 19 October 2007. The storyline is a remake of the 2004 American film Cellular.

Synopsis

Sid (Sanjay Suri) is a chef, as well as a MI-5 secret agent. Not even his wife or son knows his true identity. While at his real job, his family get kidnapped at home. By the time Sid gets back home, he notices this, and investigates who could have done it. There he finds a CD, which witnesses his family on gun-point by Kabir (Aftab Shivdasani), an ex Indian Intelligence officer. He is doing this because he wants Sid to kill the Prime minister, Gayatri Devi, since she didn't help Kabir at all while he was in prison in Pakistan. Sid does exactly how he is told, therefore Kabir asks him to meet him at an old-horse bet counter where he has kept his wife and child.

Speed (novel)

Speed, first published in 1970, was the first of three published works by William S. Burroughs, Jr., the son of the Beat Generation author William S. Burroughs.

Summary

Speed is an autobiographical novel about the ins and outs of the life of a methamphetamine addict. It starts out with Burroughs in his grandmother's house in Florida and moves to the streets of New York. It is written in the straight narrative style. Throughout the book the life of the speed addict is explored and the stories of how Burroughs got from being a teenage speed-freak to getting arrested and tried for forging a prescription is touched upon. "Speed" was almost rejected by its publisher due to its crude themes, such as the in depth sex scene between Burroughs and his child love, Maria.

Impact

Burroughs' second work, Kentucky Ham, is similar in some aspects to Speed and elucidates on the other adventures had by him after Speed was written. His third work, Cursed From Birth, was compiled by David Ohle and published posthumously.

Four-velocity

In physics, in particular in special relativity and general relativity, a four-velocity is a four-vector in four-dimensional spacetime that represents the relativistic counterpart of velocity, which is a three-dimensional vector in space.

Physical events correspond to mathematical points in time and space, the set of all of them together forming a mathematical model of physical four-dimensional spacetime. The history of an object traces a curve in spacetime, called its world line. If the object is massive, so that its speed is less than the speed of light, the world line may be parametrized by the proper time of the object. The four-velocity is the rate of change of four-position with respect to the proper time along the curve. The velocity, in contrast, is the rate of change of the position in (three-dimensional) space of the object, as seen by an observer, with respect to the observer's time.

The value of the magnitude of an object's four-velocity, i. e. the quantity obtained by applying the metric tensor g to the four-velocity u, that is ||u||² = u â‹… u = g_μνu^νu^μ, is always equal to ±c², where c is the speed of light. Whether the plus or minus sign applies depends on the choice of metric signature. For an object at rest its four-velocity is parallel to the direction of the time coordinate with u⁰ = c. A four-velocity is thus the normalized future-directed timelike tangent vector to a world line, and is a contravariant vector. Though it is a vector, addition of two four-velocities does not yield a four-velocity: The space of four-velocities is not itself a vector space.
