In the sixth episode of Dream of Italy (new PBS travel series), we head to the heel of Italy - Puglia. Local Tonino Benincasa gives host Kathy McCabe an introduction to the Baroque city of Lecce with a classic car ride. Lecce is famous for its paper mâché and we see how nativity scene figures are crafted at Cartapesta Claudio Riso. Outside Lecce, in the town of Squinzano, Kathy meets the locals and gets a ride in a tiny Ape car to an olive mill where locals are dancing the pizzica in celebration of the harvest. A local mama teaches Kathy to make orecchiette (pasta). Alberobello is famous for its classic cone-shaped houses (trulli) and we learn the history of them. They don’t call Italy “Il bel paese” - “The beautiful country” - for nothing, and it’s no coincidence. For my next project I decided once again to pay homage to my homeland, a place that always leaves an impression on my heart, the southern region of Puglia.
There is a list called “1,000 Places To See Before You Die”. Casting a glance over it, one will notice that Italy - and Puglia in particular - boasts an enviable number of locations. With numerous UNESCO sites, pristine beaches, and enchanting destinations, it was difficult to restrict such beauty into a 2 minute video.
But here it is anyway, a small taste of what this amazing region has to offer. I’m sure you’ll add it to your own list of 1000 places to see before you die!

Apulia (/əˈpuːliə/ ə-POO-lee-ə; Italian: Puglia) is a region of Italy in Southern Italy bordering the Adriatic Sea in the east, the Ionian Sea to the southeast, and the Strait of Òtranto and Gulf of Taranto in the south. Its southernmost portion, known as Salento peninsula, forms a high heel on the "boot" of Italy. The region comprises 19,345 square kilometers (7,469 sq mi), and its population is about 4.1 million. It is bordered by the other Italian regions of Molise to the north, Campania to the west, and Basilicata to the southwest. Across the Adriatic and Ionian Seas, it faces Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Greece, and Montenegro, The Apulia region extends as far north as Monte Gargano. Its capital city is Bari.
Geography
Situated at the south-eastern tip of the Italian peninsula, Apulia covers over 19,000 square kilometers (7,336 sq mi) in a succession of broad plains and low-lying hills. The central area of the region is occupied by the Murge, a vast karst plateau, and Itria Valley. The only mountainous areas, the Gargano promontory and the Monti Dauni, do not exceed 1,150 metres (3,770 ft) and are to be found in the north of Apulia, which is the least mountainous region in Italy. 32 kilometres (20 mi) north-east of the town Peschici is the Croatian Island of Palagruža.
