Southbank Centre is a complex of artistic venues in London, England on the South Bank of the River Thames (between Hungerford Bridge and Waterloo Bridge).
It comprises three main performance venues (the Royal Festival Hall including the Saison Poetry Library, the Queen Elizabeth Hall and the Purcell Room), together with the Hayward Gallery, and is Europe’s largest centre for the arts. It attracts more than three million visitors annually. Nearly a thousand paid performances of music, dance and literature are staged at Southbank Centre each year, as well as over 300 free foyer events and an education programme, in and around the performing arts venues. In addition, three to six major art exhibitions are presented at Hayward Gallery yearly, and National Touring Exhibitions reach over 100 venues across the UK.
Southbank Centre's site, which formerly extended to 21-acres (85,000 m²) from County Hall to Waterloo Bridge, is fronted by The Queen’s Walk. In 2012 management of Jubilee Gardens transferred to the Jubilee Gardens Trust and the car park on the remaining land beyond Hungerford Bridge was sold in 2013, to extend the gardens as part of the Shell Centre redevelopment. The site is located next to the National Theatre and BFI Southbank, but does not include them.
Ludovico Einaudi OMRI (Italian: [ludoˈviːko eiˈnaudi]; born 23 November 1955) is an Italian pianist and composer. He trained at the Conservatorio Verdi in Milan and under composer Luciano Berio in the early 1980s. Einaudi began his career as a classical composer, and soon began incorporating other styles and genres—including pop, rock, world music, and folk music.
Einaudi composed the scores for a number of films and trailers, including The Intouchables and I'm Still Here, the TV miniseries Doctor Zhivago, and Acquario in 1996, for which he won the Grolla d'oro for best soundtrack. He has also released a number of solo albums of piano and orchestra, notably I Giorni in 2001, Nightbook in 2009, and In a Time Lapse in 2013. Taranta Project, a collaborative album, was released in May 2015, and Elements was released in October 2015.
Einaudi was born in Turin, Italy. His father, Giulio Einaudi, was a publisher working with authors like Italo Calvino and Primo Levi, and his grandfather, Luigi Einaudi, was President of Italy between 1948 and 1955. His mother played the piano to him as a child. He started composing his own music as a teenager, first writing by playing a folk guitar.

It’s now possible to be at the heart of an orchestra without even picking up an instrument, thanks to the Southbank Centre’s Virtual Orchestra. Thanks to some astounding technology and some wonderful music from the Philharmonia Orchestra, visitors can go inside an orchestra. And you don’t need to have spent years practising your scales and arpeggios to go in. A giant installation turns the Clore Ballroom into a 10-room orchestra with 37 screens and speakers, allowing visitors to walk through to the sound of Philharmonia playing Holst’s masterpiece The Planets. Elsewhere, a virtual reality headset offers a 360 experience of being in an orchestra, with the wearer finding themselves sat on stage with Philharmonia. Turn your head to the left and you’ll find yourself sat next to one of the m...

Content warning: adult language. Philosopher Slavoj Žižek and former Greek finance minister, Yanis Varoufakis and Wikileaks founder Julian Assange discuss Europe’s future. With the recent economic crisis in Greece, unprecedented challenges to centralised European policy, and the lack of consensus on the ongoing refugee crisis, many would agree that Europe faces its greatest ever predicament. Slavoj Žižek, regarded as ‘the most dangerous philosopher in the West’ (The New Republic), and Yanis Varoufakis, self-described ‘erratic Marxist’ and economic ‘rock-star’ (Business Insider and other publications), met in Croatia in 2013. They have never appeared together on the public stage – until now. Take your seat to hear them discuss the urgent task of building a different and more democratic Eur...
Philosopher Slavoj Žižek returns to Southbank Centre with a talk on power and betrayal in the wake of Brexit. Žižek explores what the referendum result tells us about the rise of populism and the balance of power today. Žižek discusses one of his main concerns: the link between knowledge and power, and how often those who control knowledge also keep power for themselves. Following on from Brexit and with populist movements gaining momentum around the world, how is this link between knowledge and power being manipulated to benefit elites? This talk is part of Power of Power festival, which explores the nature of power in today’s world and features Opera North’s five-star production of Wagner’s Ring Cycle. What can Wagner’s tale of the ‘all-knowing’ woman Brünnhilde, pitted against the god...
