A Comedy short entitled "Her Accidental Hero" released in 1937 by Educational Films Corporation. A well intended agency masseur (Harry Gribbon), becomes involved with a group of accident insurance scammers...with an unfeasible love interest along the way...
The film is interesting because it marks both the end and beginning of two significant film careers. Harry Gribbon (1884-1961) has 155 IMDb film credits to his name (starting in 1915), during which he often worked with the biggest names but is now somewhat forgotten. This was to be his penultimate year of film making before retiring, and one of his last shorts. Whereas for Claire Carleton (1913-79) who stars with him, this was the first of her credited films, and she went on to have 177 IMDb credits, including many solid support roles in the golden age of 1950s American television.
Rare to see an example of a film starring Harry Gribbon nowadays.

Resuming our month long look back at the Educational Pictures film company, we spotlight another forgotten (but truly talented) comedian. Born on June 9, 1885, intimidating but handsome Harry Gribbon served in many varying capacities in classic comedies. Gribbon could play a comic foil or heavy, team up with fellow comedians as Andy Clyde and Harry Sweet and could fly solo in his own films as star comic.
The 6' 5¼" Gribbon started in films with the great Mack Sennett, father of film comedy and also worked at the infamous L-KO Studios for Henry Lehrman. The L-KO comedies are noted for being amongst the most erratic and reckless of the era. Gribbon, who was known as "Rubber Face Harry" and later "Silk Hat Harry," was the brother of character actor Eddie Gribbon. Harry Gribbon retired from films in 1938 and died on July 28, 1961.
The director of this short, Leslie Pearce also directed some of Bing Crosby's earliest films, short subjects, also produced for Educational and later edited in to the exploitation feature THE ROAD TO HOLLYWOOD, that was released when Crosby's star elevated substantially.

The movie makers are filming the next installment of the western serial, "Get Your Man". The movie's leading man wants his stunt double to do the next dangerous stunt. Purely by accident, a hapless, cross-eyed aspiring actor named Joe Magee ends up doing the stunt perfectly. He ends up doing dangerous stunt after stunt, all by accident, that fit the movie so perfectly that the movie's leading lady wants him in the picture. The exasperated director finds that getting Joe to do the stunts on command is an entirely different story.

But the day changes when Roach's farmhand sees an opportunity to be the knight in shining armor to Louise, Roach's daughter, who he wants to marry. Roach, however will not have his daughter marry a lowly farmhand, although Louise loves the farmhand. It's also rent day, and their landlord - the mortgage holder of the farm - is making his rounds to collect the moneys. He uses his position of power to garner sexual favors from women in return for non-eviction. Having never met Louise, the landlord immediately falls in love with her, who he too wants to marry. Louise hatches a plan to throw off the landlord's unwanted advances. That plan has unintended consequences. Add to the mix Louise's fear of mice, the landlord intercepting an important letter to Roach, a collar salesman and his missing infant son, and it becomes unclear who Roach will allow marry his daughter and if she will get married at all.

Our celebration of Educational Pictures continues with yet another fabulous Harry Gribbon comedy from mid-1937. This one was written by Parke Levy, who not only penned the MY FRIEND IRMA films (1949-1950) but also produced several television programs including DECEMBER BRIDE starring Spring Byington as well as its spin-off PETE AND GLADYS, both of which were early television programs starring Harry Morgan of M*A*S*H fame.
This would be Gribbon's third-to-last appearance on the silver screen, he would star in two more shorts for Educational (MONEY ON YOUR LIFE, 1937 and CACTUS CABALLEROS, 1938). His last on-screen appearance was on an episode of the panel game show MAKE THE CONNECTION (1955), which featured Betty White, Eddie Bracken and Gloria DeHaven as panelists.

In part because of a bad night of sleep, a soda clerk at a department store is having a bad day at work, which negatively affects his relationship with a pretty cashier, to whom he is attracted, and a ribbon clerk, who is also attracted to the cashier. The next morning, the cashier is charged with a robbery that occurred overnight at the store. However, circumstantial evidence points to the soda clerk having committed both the $10,000 robbery and the assumed murder of the store's nightwatchman, who is missing. The soda clerk is charged and imprisoned, with the cashier being released. Certain parties come into possession of important evidence both about the robbery and the nightwatchman's disappearance. They need to get this evidence to the proper authorities for justice to be served, which ends up not being the easiest of tasks for anyone involved.

Harry Gribbon
Harry Gribbon (June 9, 1885 – July 28, 1961) was an American film actor. He appeared in 144 films between 1915 and 1938. He was the brother of actor Eddie Gribbon and worked for the obscure L-KO Kompany after starting out with Mack Sennett. Many of his films from this era have been lost.

Our celebration of Educational Pictures continues with yet another fabulous Harry Gribbon comedy from mid-1937. This one was written by Parke Levy, who not only penned the MY FRIEND IRMA films (1949-1950) but also produced several television programs including DECEMBER BRIDE starring Spring Byington as well as its spin-off PETE AND GLADYS, both of which were early television programs starring Harry Morgan of M*A*S*H fame.

However, circumstantial evidence points to the soda clerk having committed both the $10,000 robbery and the assumed murder of the store's nightwatchman, who is missing. The soda clerk is charged and imprisoned, with the cashier being released. Certain parties come into possession of important evidence both about the robbery and the nightwatchman's disappearance. They need to get this evidence to the proper authorities for justice to be served, which ends up not being the easiest of tasks for anyone involved.

The film is interesting because it marks both the end and beginning of two significant film careers. Harry Gribbon (1884-1961) has 155 IMDb film credits to his name (starting in 1915), during which he often worked with the biggest names but is now somewhat forgotten. This was to be his penultimate year of film making before retiring, and one of his last shorts. Whereas for Claire Carleton (1913-79) who stars with him, this was the first of her credited films, and she went on to have 177 IMDb credits, including many solid support roles in the golden age of 1950s American television.
Rare to see an example of a film starring Harry Gribbon nowadays.

Resuming our month long look back at the Educational Pictures film company, we spotlight another forgotten (but truly talented) comedian. Born on June 9, 1885, intimidating but handsome Harry Gribbon served in many varying capacities in classic comedies. Gribbon could play a comic foil or heavy, team up with fellow comedians as Andy Clyde and Harry Sweet and could fly solo in his own films as star comic.
The 6' 5¼" Gribbon started in films with the great Mack Sennett, father of film comedy and also worked at the infamous L-KO Studios for Henry Lehrman. The L-KO comedies are noted for being amongst the most erratic and reckless of the era. Gribbon, who was known as "Rubber Face Harry" and later "Silk Hat Harry," was the brother of character actor Eddie Gribbon. Harry Gribbon retired from films in 1938 and died on July 28, 1961.
The director of this short, Leslie Pearce also directed some of Bing Crosby's earliest films, short subjects, also produced for Educational and later edited in to the exploitation feature THE ROAD TO HOLLYWOOD, that was released when Crosby's star elevated substantially.

The movie makers are filming the next installment of the western serial, "Get Your Man". The movie's leading man wants his stunt double to do the next dangerous stunt. Purely by accident, a hapless, cross-eyed aspiring actor named Joe Magee ends up doing the stunt perfectly. He ends up doing dangerous stunt after stunt, all by accident, that fit the movie so perfectly that the movie's leading lady wants him in the picture. The exasperated director finds that getting Joe to do the stunts on command is an entirely different story.

The day starts off as any normal day on Roach's farm, where Teddy, the farmhouse dog, is doing more productive work than everyone else combined. But the day changes when Roach's farmhand sees an opportunity to be the knight in shining armor to Louise, Roach's daughter, who he wants to marry. Roach, however will not have his daughter marry a lowly farmhand, although Louise loves the farmhand. It's also rent day, and their landlord - the mortgage holder of the farm - is making his rounds to collect the moneys. He uses his position of power to garner sexual favors from women in return for non-eviction. Having never met Louise, the landlord immediately falls in love with her, who he too wants to marry. Louise hatches a plan to throw off the landlord's unwanted advances. That plan has unintended consequences. Add to the mix Louise's fear of mice, the landlord intercepting an important letter to Roach, a collar salesman and his missing infant son, and it becomes unclear who Roach will allow marry his daughter and if she will get married at all.

Harry Gribbon (June 9, 1885 – July 28, 1961) was an American film actor. He appeared in 144 films between 1915 and 1938. He was the brother of actor Eddie Gribbon and worked for the obscure L-KO Kompany after starting out with Mack Sennett. Many of his films from this era have been lost.
