Burton developed a pianistic style of four-mallet technique as an alternative to the prevailing two-mallet technique. This approach caused him to be heralded as an innovator and his sound and technique are widely imitated. He is also known for pioneering fusion jazz and popularizing the duet format in jazz, as well as being a major figure in music education from his 30 years at the Berklee College of Music.

Biography
Burton was born in Anderson, Indiana in 1943. Beginning music at six years old, Burton for the most part taught himself to play marimba and vibraphone. He also began studying piano at age sixteen as he finished high school in Princeton, Indiana (1956–60). Burton has cited jazz pianist Bill Evans as a main inspiration for his approach toward the vibraphone.
Burton attended Berklee College of Music in Boston in 1960–61. He studied with Herb Pomeroy and soon befriended the composer and arranger Michael Gibbs. After establishing his career during the 1960s, he returned to join the staff of Berklee from 1971–2004, serving first as Professor, then Dean and finally as Executive Vice President during his last decade at the college.

Chick Corea
Armando Anthony "Chick" Corea (born June 12, 1941) is an American jazz and fusion pianist, keyboardist, and composer.
Many of his compositions are considered jazz standards. As a member of Miles Davis' band in the late 1960s, he participated in the birth of the electric jazz fusion movement. In the 1970s he formed Return to Forever. Along with Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner, and Keith Jarrett, he has been described as one of the major jazz piano voices to emerge in the post-John Coltrane era.
Corea continued to pursue other collaborations and to explore various musical styles throughout the 1980s and 1990s. He is also known for promoting and fundraising for a number of social issues.
Life and career
Youth
Armando Corea was born in Chelsea, Massachusetts. He is of southern Italian and Spanish descent. His father, a jazz trumpet player who had led a Dixieland band in Boston in the 1930s and 1940s, introduced him to the piano at the age of four. Growing up surrounded by jazz music, he was influenced at an early age by bebop and stars such as Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Bud Powell, Horace Silver, and Lester Young. At eight Corea also took up drums, which would later influence his use of the piano as a percussion instrument.

But in this case, it wasn't because they've been jazz pioneers and innovators since the 1960s and are considered to be founding fathers of jazz fusion, not to mention two of the most important jazz figures performing today. It's not because they've collectively recorded more than 100 albums and won 29 Grammy Awards. The agitation was because both of their instruments couldn't fit behind Bob Boilen's Tiny Desk. There were logistical hurdles to overcome before the jazz giants' arrival. We had to move the desk to make a bigger "stage." But in this case, it wasn't because they've been jazz pioneers and innovators since the 1960s and are considered to be founding fathers of jazz fusion, not to mention two of the most important jazz figures performing today. It's not because they've collectively recorded more than 100 albums and won 29 Grammy Awards. The agitation was because both of their instruments couldn't fit behind Bob Boilen's Tiny Desk.
There were logistical hurdles to overcome before the jazz giants' arrival. We had to move the desk to make a bigger "stage." Piano movers hauled the 900-pound Yamaha C7 grand piano from our first-floor performance studio up the freight elevator to the fourth-floor Tiny Desk area. But weeks of meticulous measuring and planning paid off when the rented vibes were delivered and just fit alongside the piano.
Gary Burton and Chick Corea were in town for the 2016 NEA Jazz Masters Concert. The NEA Jazz Masters fellowship is the highest honor our nation bestows on jazz artists. Each year, the program honors a select few living legends who have made exceptional contributions to the advancement of jazz. Burton was a newly appointed 2016 recipient, while Corea received the honor in 2006.
These friends first played together 44 years ago, when they recorded their very first album, Crystal Silence. In his autobiography, Gary Burton tells the story:
We set aside three days for the recording. Except for ... one tune in Munich, Chick and I hadn't worked together before Berlin, so we figured we would need a fair amount of time to choose songs and finalize arrangements. But to our amazement, it all went incredibly fast. We would spend maybe twenty minutes creating an arrangement, and then record. We did every song in just one take, except that we required a second spin through "Senor Mouse."
The record was finished in just a few hours, and the two realized they had a unique musical chemistry with the ability to anticipate each other's improvisational ideas. That album went on to become a classic: flawless yet fresh and forever new.
A few thousand concerts later, the jazz masters showed up at NPR HQ to perform a concert at our newly expanded Tiny Desk. On this day, it had been almost two years since Chick Corea and Gary Burton had played together — the longest break they'd ever had. But once again, their remarkable ability to connect was demonstrated in two songs they play together all the time.

2013 marks the 70th birthday of jazz vibraphonist and master teacher Gary Burton. Last month he celebrated his birthday in grand style with a week of performances with special guests. Opening his first two nights he invited the legendary Arturo Sandoval to share the band-stage. Then, Grammy-Award winning trumpeter and composer Terence Blanchard hit the stage for two nights of fiery sets. And closing out the week was Gary reuniting with the legendary Larry Coryell. This was both Gary and Larry's first time playing together in 45 years since the two have recorded and toured in his first working quartet.
Gary has a brand new autobiography marking his 50 years as a musician titled "Learning To Listen." The book reflects on the musicians he's played with over the years ranging from Stan Getz, George Shearing, and Roy Haynes just to name a few. He also sheds some light on his life as an educator and the highs and lows of the record industry. In addition to Gary's book, his latest Mack Avenue Records release "Guided Tour" is the second release with the label but also the second to feature talented musicians like Julian Lage, Antonio Sanchez, and Scott Colley.

Vibraphonist, composer, educator, and show host Gary Burton is still a pioneer in jazz celebrating his 50th year in the business. Burton's left a mark on popular music playing with the likes of BB King, Chick Corea, Pat Metheny, and The Byrds. Still, never leaving the traditional forms of jazz, yet reaching the generations with his love for all styles of music and incorporating a voice during the mid-to-late 1960's.
The 67-year-old musician is about to record and go on the road with the Gary Burton New Quartet featuring Scott Colley on bass, Julian Lage on guitar, and Antonio Sanchez on drums. This is the first time Gary's played with the new unit and the Blue Note Jazz Club in New York City's performances were all sold-out.
While growing up in rural Indiana, Burton experimented and practiced the 4 Mallet Technique that has become his signature sound. While in high school he befriended the legendary Boots Randolph and asked him to record on one of his records while he was recording with RCA Records. Upon graduating from high school, both Boots and Gary recorded on some of the most prolific records in Nashville under the legendary Chet Akins. Atkins, one of the architects of the "classic Nashville sound," also took a liking to the young Burton and offered him a record contract before starting Berklee School of Music in Boston.
In the first part of my one-on-one interview with Gary live at the Blue Note in New York, we talk about his early days as a musician and him growing up in Indiana.
