Nature and Life Episode 124 .Green Economy and Development. By Prokriti O Jibon Foundation. Human Civilization moves ahead through close integration of life, science and natural environment. A country's development or decay depends on the good or bad condition of its natural environment. Sometimes improvident use of science causes natural disasters like: drought, flood, cyclone etc. and upsets biodiversity and environment. Evasion of such occurrences requires certainty of environmental and economic development as well as sustainable consumption of every component of the environment. The technology and management of sustainable development, that does not damage the environment, is called green economy. This economic system includes: use of renewable energies, ecofriendly habitation and transportation system and sustainable management of land and water resources. According to scientists, green economy can potentially develop human civilization as well as save biodiversity and ecosystem by reducing greenhouse emission and environmental vulnerabilities. A vital part of green economy is using renewable energy instead of traditional fossil fuel. Among these renewable energies solar energy is one of the remarkable. Thanks to the science, even people of distant rural areas are also being benefitted from this energy. Solar panel converts sunlight directly into electricity. Solar plants have been planted in different places of Bangladesh. Electricity, produced by these plants, is being used for various day-to-day activities. Light bulb, fan, TV etc. electronic items are running by this electricity. Solar plants are very popular in those areas of the country where there is no electricity. It is cost efficient and ecofriendly for it doesn't require oil, gas or coal. Besides solar energy, electricity is also being produced by using air energy and water current. In many countries windmill is being used to produce electricity. Bio-gas plant has accelerated green development in many areas of Bangladesh. Different sized bio-gas plants, made of bricks and concrete, are available in our country. Excreta of domestic animals, household wastes and agriculture wastes are being used as raw material for these bio-gas plants. In this plant methane gas is produced through bio-technology. Methane is an efficient fuel. This gas is being used for cooking, lighting bulbs and even producing electricity. The residue of bio-gas plant makes high quality organic fertilizer. This fertilizer is used in land as alternative to chemical fertilizer and in water as fish feed. Besides bio-gas, use of bio-fuel is gradually getting popularity to meet the demand of environment friendly fuel. This bio-fuel is extracted from fruits or seeds of different plants. But bio-fuel is now being obtained from comparatively less essential plants to reduce the pressure on food-grains. Castor and Jatropha are two such plants. Though they are branded as weeds in our country, quality bio-fuel can be produced from their seeds. These plants can grow in different soil types and can survive in almost everywhere, for they absorb less water. Huge quantity of seeds can be collected every year from these perennial plants. Fuel is obtained mainly from the seeds of these plants. Like other fuel, this fuel can be used for almost all purpose. Since this fuel emits less CO2, it doesn't impact climate change. As a source of renewable energy bio-fuel can be a better replacement of organic fuel. Another vital part of green economy is Recycling system. In this system used plastic, glass bottle, aluminum goods, waste paper etc. items are turned into something that is reusable. This is fulfilling the demand of raw materials as well as deterring environmental pollution. Green economy has not been developed that much in our country compared to other developed countries of the world. This is due to lack of proper initiatives by government and non-government organizations and lack of awareness among general people of the country. Government organizations can play a major role in this regard. Green development can be accelerated by providing loan and other facilities to invent high quality environment friendly technologies, their marketing and building awareness among mass people about their environmental benefits.
