Lancashire (/ˈlæŋkəʃər/, /ˈlæŋkəʃɪər/ or, locally, [ˈɫaŋkɪʃə(ɻ)]; archaically the County Palatine of Lancaster; abbreviated Lancs.) is a county in north west England. Although Lancaster is still the county town, the county's administrative centre is Preston. The county has a population of 1,449,300 and an area of 1,189 square miles (3,080 km2). People from the county are known as Lancastrians.
The history of Lancashire begins with its founding in the 12th century. In the Domesday Book of 1086, some of its lands were treated as part of Yorkshire. The land that lay between the Ribble and Mersey, Inter Ripam et Mersam was included in the returns for Cheshire. When its boundaries were established, it bordered Cumberland, Westmorland, Yorkshire and Cheshire.
Lancashire emerged as a major commercial and industrial region during the Industrial Revolution. Manchester and Liverpool grew into its largest cities, dominating global trade and the birth of modern capitalism. The county contained several mill towns and the collieries of the Lancashire Coalfield. By the 1830s, approximately 85% of all cotton manufactured worldwide was processed in Lancashire.Accrington, Blackburn, Bolton, Burnley, Bury, Chorley, Colne, Darwen, Nelson, Oldham, Preston, Rochdale and Wigan were major cotton mill towns during this time. Blackpool was a centre for tourism for the inhabitants of Lancashire's mill towns, particularly during wakes week.
The London Midland and Scottish Railway Class 5 4-6-0, almost universally known as the Black Five, is a class of steam locomotive. It was introduced by William Stanier in 1934 and 842 were built between then and 1951. Members of the class survived to the last day of steam on British Railways in 1968, and eighteen are preserved. This class of locomotive was often a favourite amongst drivers and railway fans.
The Black Fives were a mixed traffic locomotive, a "do-anything go-anywhere" type, designed by Stanier, who had previously been with the GWR. In his early LMS days, he designed his Stanier Mogul 2-6-0 in which he experimented with the GWR school of thought on locomotive design. A number of details in this design he would never use again realising the superiority of details not used on the GWR. Stanier realised that there was a need for larger locomotives. These were to be the LMS version of the GWR Halls but not a copy, as the Hall was too wide to run most places in Britain. They shared similar cylinder arrangement (two outside), internal boiler design and size and 6 foot driving wheel diameters.
Operation Herrick is the codename under which all British operations in the War in Afghanistan were conducted from 2002 to the end of combat operations in 2014. It consisted of the British contribution to the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), and support to the American-led Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF). Since 2003, Operation Herrick has increased in size and breadth to match ISAF's growing geographical intervention in Afghanistan.
Operation Herrick superseded two previous efforts in Afghanistan. The first of these was Operation Veritas, which consisted of support to the War in Afghanistan in October 2001. The last major action of this was a sweep in east Afghanistan by 1,700 Royal Marines during Operation Jacana, which ended in mid-2002. The second was Operation Fingal, which involved leadership and a 2,000 strong contribution for a newly formed ISAF in Kabul after December 2001. Command was subsequently transferred to Turkey several months later and the British contingent was scaled back to 300. Since then, all combat operations in Afghanistan have been conducted under Operation Herrick.
The Lancashire Fusiliers was a line infantry regiment of the British Army that saw distinguished service through many centuries and wars, including the Second Boer War both the First World War and the Second World War, and had many different titles throughout its 280 years of existence. In 1968 the Regiment was amalgamated with the other regiments of the Fusilier Brigade – the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers, Royal Warwickshire Fusiliers and the Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment) – to form the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers.
By a commission dated 20 November 1688 the regiment was formed in Torbay, Devon under Sir Richard Peyton as Peyton's Regiment of Foot. (The regiment's name changed according to the name of the colonel commanding until 1751.) The regiment served in the Glorious Revolution under King William III and at the Battle of the Boyne in July 1690 and the Battle of Aughrim in 1691. During the War of the Spanish Succession (1701–1714), it aided in the capture of Spanish galleons at Battle of Vigo Bay in 1702. The regiment distinguished itself at the Battle of Dettingen in June 1743, and at the Battle of Fontenoy in May 1745, and served in the Battle of Culloden in April 1746.
Ian Riley's Black 5 has seen a lot of action down south recently following WCRC's other locos going out of service. Here we see 45407 "The Lancashire Fusilier" - regrettably off the power - rattling through Brookwood station on a crisp clear December morning, with 47580 "County of Essex" resplendent in its BR Blue/Union Jack livery giving a little push from behind. I tried adjusting some camera colour and exposure settings to try and make the image "pop" today, I think it came out well although with some purple-fringing on the rails, that should be fixed by a decent UV filter. That's all for 2015 folks; I hope you have enjoyed my videos so far, and stay tuned to see what comes in 2016! Have a very Merry Christmas everyone, and a happy new year :) See you in the next one! All footage ...

46100 Royal Scot followed by Black Five 45407 The Lancashire Fusilier on a very windy Tuesday afternoon, 21st March 2017 en-route from Southall Wcr, London to Grosmont on the North Yorks Railway via York, approaching the level crossing on Tuxford Road leading to Normanton on Trent, Nottinghamshire. Apologies for the lack of sound and unsteady image. The wind was strong enough to blow the wind muff away and make it difficult to pan with one hand whilst making an attempt to hold the tripod down with the other!

Images of working people of Heywood, Lancs, from around a century ago. Heywood grew from an 18th-century village to become a thriving cotton town during the 19th century, but the collapse of the cotton industry sent the town into a decline it is still recovering from. These photos show some of the mill workers and and shopkeepers and farmers of the town. Music is by Edward Elgar, "Variations (Enigma), variation IX 'Nimrod'"

The rain held off in the east for this very rare scene as Ian Rileys class 37 37518 in its Swallow "Intercity" livery, leads Black 5 45407, "The Lancashire Fusilier" and BR standard class 7 70000 "Britannia" across the deep wide drains of the fens on its way from the East Lancs Railway, to the North Norfolk Railway for its "BR Standards Gala" this weekend. http://www.nnrailway.co.uk/page.php?pid=36 Watch out for the magic bush. Locomotive no. 45407 was built by the Armstrong Whitworth Company Spotswood, Newcastle in 1937, 70000 was built by BR, Crewe in 1951, and 37518 was built by the Vulcan Foundry in 1960.
Class 5MT 4-6-0 Nos 44871 and 45407 'The Lancashire Fusilier' arrive to form the 1Z67 07:48 'The Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express' Manchester Victoria-Carlisle excursion on the cold morning of Saturday 28th January 2012. Annoyingly, that Class 156 unit only turned up moments before. But I suppose it could have been a lot worse!

The Lake District, also known as The Lakes or Lakeland, is a mountainous region in North West England. A popular holiday destination, it is famous for its lakes, forests and mountains (or fells) and its associations with the early 19th-century writings of William Wordsworth and the other Lake Poets. Historically split between Cumberland, Westmorland and Lancashire, the Lake District is now entirely in Cumbria. All the land in England higher than three thousand feet (914.4 m) above sea level lies within the National Park, including Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England. It also contains the deepest and longest lakes in England, Wastwater and Windermere.
