Maria Wheatley demonstrates how Stanton Drew, Avebury and Stonehenge stone circles were associated with goddess worship. Women played a central role in prehistory. In the Neolithic era, certain long barrows housed important female shaman/healers who were given distinguished burials alongside their grave goods. During the Bronze Age, women were especially revered - even after death - as their memory lived on in extraordinary rites and customs. Maria draws you deeper into the ‘feminine’ past by showing how one particular phase of the Moon’s Metonic cycle was intimately connected to the crone aspect of the triple goddess. More spectacular than a Full Moon, this four-to-five-day lunar event was woven into some stone settings creating a visual drama in the night-time sky. This lunar period appears to have symbolised the transformation of death to rebirth, from the old to the new, and we too can interact with these alchemic lunar energies on this special and holiest of nights.
