Al Held (October 12, 1928 – July 27, 2005) was an American Abstract expressionist painter. He was particularly well known for his large scale Hard-edge paintings. As an artist, multiple stylistic changes occurred throughout his career, however, none of these occurred at the same time as any popular emerging style or acted against a particular art form. In the 1950s his style reflected the abstract expressionist tone and then transitioned to a geometric style in the 60s. During the 1980s there was a shift into acrylic painting that emphasized bright geometric space that’s deepness reflected infinity. From 1962 to 1980 he was a professor of art at Yale University.
New York is a state in the Northeastern United States and is the United States' 27th-most extensive, fourth-most populous, and seventh-most densely populated state. New York is bordered by New Jersey and Pennsylvania to the south and Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont to the east. The state has a maritime border in the Atlantic Ocean with Rhode Island, east of Long Island, as well as an international border with the Canadian provinces of Quebec to the north and Ontario to the west and north. The state of New York, with an estimated 19.8 million residents in 2015, is often referred to as New York State to distinguish it from New York City, the state's most populous city and its economic hub.
With an estimated population of nearly 8.5 million in 2014, New York City is the most populous city in the United States and the premier gateway for legal immigration to the United States. The New York City Metropolitan Area is one of the most populous urban agglomerations in the world. New York City is a global city, exerting a significant impact upon commerce, finance, media, art, fashion, research, technology, education, and entertainment, its fast pace defining the term New York minute. The home of the United Nations Headquarters, New York City is an important center for international diplomacy and has been described as the cultural and financial capital of the world, as well as the world's most economically powerful city. New York City makes up over 40% of the population of New York State. Two-thirds of the state's population lives in the New York City Metropolitan Area, and nearly 40% live on Long Island. Both the state and New York City were named for the 17th century Duke of York, future King James II of England. The next four most populous cities in the state are Buffalo, Rochester, Yonkers, and Syracuse, while the state capital is Albany.

Abstract expressionism is a post–World War II art movement in American painting, developed in New York in the 1940s. It was the first specifically American movement to achieve international influence and put New York City at the center of the western art world, a role formerly filled by Paris. Although the term "abstract expressionism" was first applied to American art in 1946 by the art critic Robert Coates, it had been first used in Germany in 1919 in the magazine Der Sturm, regarding German Expressionism. In the United States, Alfred Barr was the first to use this term in 1929 in relation to works by Wassily Kandinsky.
Art is a diverse range of human activities in creating visual, auditory or performing artifacts – artworks, expressing the author's imaginative or technical skill, intended to be appreciated for their beauty or emotional power. In their most general form these activities include the production of works of art, the criticism of art, the study of the history of art, and the aesthetic dissemination of art.
The oldest form of art are visual arts, which include creation of images or objects in fields including painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, and other visual media. Architecture is often included as one of the visual arts; however, like the decorative arts, it involves the creation of objects where the practical considerations of use are essential—in a way that they usually are not in a painting, for example. Music, theatre, film, dance, and other performing arts, as well as literature and other media such as interactive media, are included in a broader definition of art or the arts. Until the 17th century, art referred to any skill or mastery and was not differentiated from crafts or sciences. In modern usage after the 17th century, where aesthetic considerations are paramount, the fine arts are separated and distinguished from acquired skills in general, such as the decorative or applied arts.

James Kalm had intended to attend the opening of this historic exhibition, but got sidetracked. Returning a few weeks later, he is able to record views of these paintings in near empty gallery spaces. The "Alphabet Paintings" mark the transition between Held's beginnings as a second generation Abstract Expressionist, and his mature status as a proponent of Color-Field and Post painterly abstraction. The simple yet massive forms, and the huge areas of unmodulated color captured the attention of critics and artists , and were the impetus for Held's elevation as one of the most influential and significant painters of the post WWII era. A musical introduction was captured live in the streets of Williamsburg Brooklyn by The Trouble Notes http://www.thetroublenotes.com/
Al Held American Abstract Expressionist (1928–2005) Al Held (American, 1928–2005)Al Held was an influential American Abstract Expressionist painter. Widely appreciated for his monumental Hard Edge paintings, his work features abstract, geometric forms existing in a non-Euclidean space, painted in vibrant, fluorescent color. “The best abstract painting transforms its formal qualities into metaphors for truths unavailable to direct perception,” the artist once explained. Held, often working in series, fluctuated between different conceptual styles throughout his long career. His Alphabet paintings, completed between 1961–1966, were vivid concrete abstractions of the letters of the English alphabet. This work notably contrasted stylistically with the pigment paintings he made during the 1950s...
While visiting the Met for an unrelated report, Your correspondent stumbled into the newly re-hung Contemporary Painting section of the museum. Surprised by finding this selection of Al Held works from the late 1950s, it was decided that the installation of these important transition works would make an interesting addition to the video documentation that James Kalm has already archived on the painter.
Al Held Alphabet Paintings February 28th - April 20th Opening: February 28th 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM Cheim & Read is pleased to announce an exhibition of seven monumental paintings, dating from 1961--67, by New York painter Al Held (1928--2005). Curated from several private collections, the show presents a unique opportunity to see first-hand the geometric, "hard-edge" works that defined Held's artistic output for almost a decade. The exhibition is accompanied by a full-color catalogue (including 20 illustrated works) featuring an essay by Rob Storr. Born in Brooklyn, Held dropped out of high school and joined the Navy at 16, serving from 1945-47. In 1948 he studied at the Art Students League in New York, and from 1950-53 invoked the G.I. Bill to attend the Académie de la Grand Cha...
Irving Sandler speaks on the life and work of American abstract artist Al Held and his seminal show of black and white paintings at Cheim & Read, New York. On exhibition from February 18 to March 26, 2016.
James Kalm has recently been remiss in his self-appointed mission of bringing viewers glimpses of the New York art scene (especially Chelsea), so… When other business took him to the West Side he turned on the camera, and captured some footage of three outstanding painting shows. We'll start with "Four Decades of Painting" by David Row at Loretta Howard. David has been a fixture in the abstract paining scene since the mid 1970s. This show presents the breadth of variation he's explored within this genre. Then it's on to Cheim & Reid for "Al Held Black and White Paintings 1967-1969. Held had taught Row at Yale, and this period of reductive design established Held as one of America's most influential painters. We trot around the last lap of this triple header with a visit to Amy Sillma...

In an exclusive interview with the BBC's Middle East Editor Jeremy Bowen, Mr Assad denied that his forces had dropped barrel bombs indiscriminately on rebel-held areas, killing thousands of civilians, and dismissed as propaganda a statement by the UN that his government often blocks access to besieged areas for relief organisations. The Syrian leader also denied that there was a direct dialogue with the US-led coalition fighting Islamic State but confirmed that "general messages" were sometimes passed via third parties. James Kalm proffers kudos to the curator who came up with the idea of juxtaposing the works of these two master painters. Philip Pearlstein and Al Held inhabited and influenced the historic flow of the New York School. This exhibition contrasts major works from different periods reflecting the various interests of the times. Includes an interview with Philip Pearlstein.

Members of the National Policy Institute held their national conference in Washington, D.C. this weekend. The group has been broadly referred to as part of the Alt-Right and the positions they embrace align with White Nationalism, White Supremacy, and downright racism. Members of their movement have been energized and emboldened by the election of Donald Trump, who used racially insensitive rhetoric to catapult him to the highest office in the land. On Tuesday morning during an intense interview, Roland Martin – host of NewsOne Now – confronted Richard Spencer, the leader of the National Policy Institute, about his views on America, race, White supremacy, Trump’s election, and the bright future he envisions for White America. Some men need riches and lots of money to spend
Some men need power to hold over other men
But not me baby, girl you can believe
I'm telling you my darling
You're, you're all I need
You're, you're all I need
You're, you're all I need
In this world, girl
Some men need fine clothes, big diamond rings
To feel like somebody some men need expensive things
But I feel like somebody, girl, every time you look at me
I don't need nothing to remind me that
You're, you're all I need
You're, you're all I need
You're, you're all I need
In this world, girl
Some men need a fine home on a far hillside
Some men need a big car to show off as they ride
Some men need a pretty woman just to walk by their side
And some men need to see the fear in another man's eyes
But all I need baby, is all I can see
When you wrap your loving arms around me
You're, you're all I need
You're, you're all I need
You're, you're all I need
You're, you're all I need
