Canadian Corporation Niko Resources Bribed Bangladesh Energy Minister AKM Mosharraf Hossain
Bribes made abroad by Niko Resources Ltd. have cast a "dark stain" on Calgary's reputation as the energy capital of Canada, a judge said Friday afternoon, while issuing a $9.5-million negotiated penalty against the company. "It tarnishes the reputation of Alberta and of Canada. It is an embarrassment to all Canadians," Justice Scott Brooker said after Niko pleaded guilty in Court of Queen's Bench to paying off a Bangladeshi minister with the use of a new black Toyota Land Cruiser, and a free trip to Calgary and New York in 2005. After months of back-and forth with the Crown -negotiations that went into the evening Thursday -Niko agreed to plead guilty to one charge under Canada's Corruption of Foreign Public Officials Act and pay a fine of $8.26 million, plus a 15 per cent victim surcharge. It's a Canadian court's heftiest punishment for corporate bribes of foreign officials. Niko was also placed on a court-supervised probation for three years, during which time it must make strides in improving corporate culture. The company's indictment this week came after a six-year RCMP probe involving Canadian police in Calgary and law enforcement agencies in Switzerland, Japan, the United Kingdom and Barbados -an investigation that cost $879000. "What happened was wrong. We acknowledge this. We accept responsibility, and we appreciate the seriousness of the actions," CEO Ed Sampson, who was not in court, said in a statement. Niko lawyer Kristine Robidoux said the firm is not only ...

Lindsey Williams, who has been an ordained Baptist minister for 28 years, went to Alaska in 1971 as a missionary. The Transalaska oil pipeline began its construction phase in 1974, and because of Mr. Williams' love for his country and concern for the spiritual welfare of the "pipeliners," he volunteered to serve as Chaplain on the pipeline, with the subsequent full support of the Alyeska Pipeline Company. Because of the executive status accorded to him as Chaplain, he was given access to information documented in his eye opening book, The Energy Non-Crisis. After numerous public speaking engagements in the western states, certain government officials and concerned individuals urged Mr. Williams to put into print what he saw and heard, stating that they felt this information was vital to national security. Mr. Williams firmly believes that whoever controls energy controls the economy. Thus, The Energy Non-Crisis. www.lwoil.com

Morocco Renewable Energy Megaprojects - Marcopolis.net Interview with HE Amina Benkhadra
Marcopolis.net Video Interview with HE Amina Benkhadra, Minister of Energy, Mines, Water and Environment. Also available here www.marcopolis.net Due to the economic and social growth Morocco has undergone over the last decade, with big economic reforms and new developments in different sectors such as agriculture, industry, infrastructure, and tourism, the demand for energy is increasing by 5% a year for primary energy and almost 7% for the electricity. To reduce dependency on foreign sources of energy (95% of energy is imported), the government has come up with a strategic plan to invest in renewables, especially in solar and wind energy. By 2012, Morocco is aiming to produce 20% of electricity generated from renewable sources. His Majesty has launched two main programs for solar and wind energy. Both plans aim to construct 2000 megawatts of new electric capacity by 2020 and by this year (2020) renewable energy will represent 42% of the total capacity. Those big projects will need an investment of 12.5 billion dollars.
