Headed by Drs Rick and Anita Gutierrez, the Bethel Health Builders organisation in partnership with HEARD and RATN, produced a series of videos aimed at providing cost-effective health education on HIV and AIDS to people living in Sub-Saharan Africa. The Martlet visited the Kool Aid Health Centre (713 Johnson St.) in Victoria to watch the new Rapid HIV blood test in action.
The Rapid HIV Test can be completed in under a minute. The test is administered via a small lancet. Once blood is drawn from a simple poke to the finger, the Rapid HIV Test looks for HIV antibodies. The test has been proven to be 99.9 per cent effective.
A positive aspect to this test is its anonymity. No name is required and the test may be completed during a drop-in visit to any of the three clinics in Victoria that provide it: Cool Aid Health Centre (713 Johnson St.), CRD STI Clinic (1947 Cook St.) and Island Sexual Health Clinic (200-1770 Fort St.).
Though there has been rapid oral testing available since 2005, blood-based testing has shown fewer false positive results. Additionally, as Eric Berndt, Communications & Public Relations Officer of AIDS Vancouver Island, explains, "The oral quick-test is currently not available in Canada; it is available in the U.S."
When people test at home, there is an increased risk that they will not seek treatment or support if necessary.
"Getting an HIV test in a clinic is beneficial because health providers can provide pre- and post-test counselling and provide information, support and referrals to other supports, including treatment options," says Berndt.
Since the test can provide results in under a minute, it is hoped that the rapid test will remove the stigma and anxiety usually associated with HIV testing.
Given that there are 13,000 people with HIV living in B.C., and a quarter of those people don't even know they are infected, the test couldn't be more important.

Many people who think about HIV testing initially get quite afraid, and we find out that while most are quite wary with the results, many too are scared because they do not know what happens during the actual testing. In this video we share, in a very casual and brief way, what happens during testing. We also introduce what Love Yourself is and its work in helping the HIV education and prevention efforts in the Philippines.

Testing for HIV at home has now become a reality.
U.S. health regulators have approved the first over-the-counter home test for the virus that causes AIDS.
OraQuick uses mouth swabs and provides results in around 20 minutes.
Douglas Michels, head of the product's manufacturer, says it is not meant to replace clinical tests, but merely act as a supplement.

"We believe that this is another tool in the fight against HIV and AIDS. This doesn't replace testing that goes on in clinics or doctor's offices or hospitals. We see this as another opportunity for people to learn their HIV status. So we believe that this is going to increase people's awareness about HIV and AIDS and we hope it will serve to reduce the stigma that surrounds HIV and AIDS and make testing more normal."
The test is already being used by clinical technicians across the U.S.
The home version includes a detailed instruction booklet and access to a 24-hour helpline.
Health care professionals welcomed the news but were cautious.

"It's encouraging that people have another tool in their toolbox. But again that comes with a lot of questions that we have about how this is going to be rolled out. Will the people that are there at the other end of the 24-hour hotline actually have all the information that is necessary to be able to give appropriate information to people that are calling in to find out, or to help them in reading the results of their test?"
Clinical trials showed the test was accurate 92 percent of the time in diagnosing HIV - meaning one out of every 12 test results would be a false negative.
Experts warn this might lead some HIV-positive people to take fewer precautions.
The test will also not detect HIV within the first three months of infection.
OraQuick is scheduled to hit store shelves in October.

Take-Home HIV Test OraQuick Approved for Use in US
Testing for HIV at home has now become a reality. U.S. health regulators have approved the first over-the-counter home test for the virus that causes AIDS. OraQuick uses mouth swabs and provides results in around 20 minutes. Douglas Michels, head of the product's manufacturer, says it is not meant to replace clinical tests, but merely act as a supplement. The Martlet visited the Kool Aid Health Centre (713 Johnson St.) in Victoria to watch the new Rapid HIV blood test in action.
The Rapid HIV Test can be completed in under a minute. The test is administered via a small lancet. Once blood is drawn from a simple poke to the finger, the Rapid HIV Test looks for HIV antibodies. The test has been proven to be 99.9 per cent effective.
A positive aspect to this test is its anonymity. No name is required and the test may be completed during a drop-in visit to any of the three clinics in Victoria that provide it: Cool Aid Health Centre (713 Johnson St.), CRD STI Clinic (1947 Cook St.) and Island Sexual Health Clinic (200-1770 Fort St.).
Though there has been rapid oral testing available since 2005, blood-based testing has shown fewer false positive results. Additionally, as Eric Berndt, Communications & Public Relations Officer of AIDS Vancouver Island, explains, "The oral quick-test is currently not available in Canada; it is available in the U.S."
When people test at home, there is an increased risk that they will not seek treatment or support if necessary.
"Getting an HIV test in a clinic is beneficial because health providers can provide pre- and post-test counselling and provide information, support and referrals to other supports, including treatment options," says Berndt.
Since the test can provide results in under a minute, it is hoped that the rapid test will remove the stigma and anxiety usually associated with HIV testing.
Given that there are 13,000 people with HIV living in B.C., and a quarter of those people don't even know they are infected, the test couldn't be more important.

"It's encouraging that people have another tool in their toolbox. But again that comes with a lot of questions that we have about how this is going to be rolled out. Will the people that are there at the other end of the 24-hour hotline actually have all the information that is necessary to be able to give appropriate information to people that are calling in to find out, or to help them in reading the results of their test?"
Clinical trials showed the test was accurate 92 percent of the time in diagnosing HIV - meaning one out of every 12 test results would be a false negative.
Experts warn this might lead some HIV-positive people to take fewer precautions.
The test will also not detect HIV within the first three months of infection.
OraQuick is scheduled to hit store shelves in October.
