Warning: there is a scene in here that might be hard to watch for anyone who is squeamish about the sight of blood. The Martlet visited the Kool Aid Health Centre (713 Johnson St.) in Victoria to watch the new Rapid HIV blood test in action. The Rapid HIV Test can be completed in under a minute. The test is administered via a small lancet. Once blood is drawn from a simple poke to the finger, the Rapid HIV Test looks for HIV antibodies. The test has been proven to be 99.9 per cent effective. A positive aspect to this test is its anonymity. No name is required and the test may be completed during a drop-in visit to any of the three clinics in Victoria that provide it: Cool Aid Health Centre (713 Johnson St.), CRD STI Clinic (1947 Cook St.) and Island Sexual Health Clinic (200-1770 Fort S...

Many people who think about HIV testing initially get quite afraid, and we find out that while most are quite wary with the results, many too are scared because they do not know what happens during the actual testing. In this video we share, in a very casual and brief way, what happens during testing. We also introduce what Love Yourself is and its work in helping the HIV education and prevention efforts in the Philippines. Are you interested in getting yourself tested? Register on the link below and we'll have one of our HIV counselors contact you: http://www.loveyourself.ph/HIVtest Love Yourself is a non-profit organization that aims to reach out to the community to propagate ideas, attitudes, and practices that encourage loving oneself -- to DARE to be oneself, to CARE for oneself, a...
Testing for HIV at home has now become a reality. U.S. health regulators have approved the first over-the-counter home test for the virus that causes AIDS. OraQuick uses mouth swabs and provides results in around 20 minutes. Douglas Michels, head of the product's manufacturer, says it is not meant to replace clinical tests, but merely act as a supplement. [Douglas Michels, Orasure CEO] "We believe that this is another tool in the fight against HIV and AIDS. This doesn't replace testing that goes on in clinics or doctor's offices or hospitals. We see this as another opportunity for people to learn their HIV status. So we believe that this is going to increase people's awareness about HIV and AIDS and we hope it will serve to reduce the stigma that surrounds HIV and AIDS and make testing...

British scientists have developed a new HIV test that plugs into your laptop. The device detects the virus in a drop of blood and creates an electrical signal that can be read by a computer. The test as able to produce results in under 30 minutes, with 95-percent accuracy. Experts say this technology could eventually allow HIV patients to regularly check their virus levels in the same way diabetics monitor their blood sugar. It could also be used in remote areas of Africa, where there are very few testing facilities.

In the United States, current HIV diagnostic algorithms based solely on serologic criteria for infection are inadequate for the timely diagnosis of acute or early HIV infection. Dr. Robert Coombs, professor of Laboratory Medicine and Medicine at the University of Washington, advises that future diagnostic algorithms should embrace simple/rapid antibody and HIV nucleic acid testing to support efforts to incorporate the concept of "presumptive HIV infection" into the early reporting of HIV test results. These simple/rapid test devices for detecting HIV infection will be very useful for point-of-care HIV testing in both resource-rich and resource- limited settings, but the limitations of these tests must be considered. A greater effort should be made to educate health care providers about the...
Recent changes in testing technologies for syphilis and HIV present diagnostic laboratories new opportunities and challenges. Matthew Golden, division of allergy and infectious disease at the University of Washington, discusses newly available enzyme immunoassays for syphilis and new approaches to testing for HIV, including rapid point-of-care tests and pooled HIV RNA testing. Golden emphasizes how laboratories can help clinicians interpret test results and choose the most appropriate test for their environment. Matthew Golden, MD
