Guatemala (i/ˌɡwɑːtᵻˈmɑːləˌ ɡwæ-ˌ ɡɑː-/ GWAH-tə-MAH-lə, GWAT-ə-MAH-lə or GAH-tə-MAH-lə; Spanish: [gwateˈmala]), officially the Republic of Guatemala (Spanish: República de Guatemala), is a country in Central America bordered by Mexico to the north and west, the Pacific Ocean to the southwest, Belize to the northeast, the Caribbean to the east, Honduras to the east and El Salvador to the southeast. With an estimated population of around 15.8 million, it is the most populous state in Central America. A representative democracy, Guatemala's capital and largest city is Nueva Guatemala de la Asunción, also known as Guatemala City.
The territory of modern Guatemala once formed the core of the Mayan civilization, which extended across Mesoamerica. Most of the country was conquered by the Spanish in the 16th century, becoming part of the viceroyalty of New Spain. Guatemala attained independence in 1821 as part of the Federal Republic of Central America, which dissolved in 1841.

Federico Mora Hospital has been described by campaigners as the world's most abusive and dangerous mental health institution. In 2012, Guatemala was ordered by an American Human Rights Commission to make emergency improvements to the Federico Mora Hospital to "save lives". The government promised to comply. But an undercover BBC investigation found little has changed. The government defends conditions in the hospital, says it has begun improving mental health care in the country and has ordered an investigation into sex...

Guatemala's Economy Minister Sergio de la Torre opened his presentation on the country's path for economic development stressing the need to invest in social inclusion in order for economic growth to be sustainable. At the same time, he noted that without accelerating productivity and growing the economy, social development is not possible. The minister listed the country's major infrastructure projects, highlighting two main ways to grow the economy: a heavy industrial corridor that would integrate trade with Mexico, which would "open the doors to NAFTA" and lower energy costs in Guatemala by 75 percent; and a goods manufacturing corridor, with logistics to integrate Central America's markets and develop four cities in Guatemala, which the government chose as special development zones.
Strengthening the capabilities of rural people to take advantage of opportunities in the rural non-farm economy is essential according to the Rural Poverty Report 2011, prepared by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). When rural women are able to access better paid jobs outside of the agricultural sector it benefits their families as well as the wider economy. In this video, María Ana Lagog González, a weaver from Guatemala, talks about how she has been able to offer her family a better future through weaving. "I blame the war on drugs in the United States for what is happening here in Guatemala." --Giancarlo Ibarguen Most of the cocaine shipped north from Central and South America these days travels through Guatemala and into Mexico before eventually crossing the border to the United States. The value of that cocaine, even before it enters the US market, is approximately $40 billion a year. That's nearly the size of Guatemala's entire economy. The drug cartels in Guatemala act with impunity and effectively control much of the country. As Guatemala's President Alvaro Colom recently told Al Jazeera, "The drug traffickers are much better armed and financed than our military and our government." Guatemala, as a result, has become a very dangerous place to live. What's the solution? According t...
The 1954 Guatemalan coup d'état was a covert operation organized by the United States Central Intelligence Agency to overthrow Jacobo Árbenz Guzmán, the democratically-elected President of Guatemala. Árbenz's government put forth a number of new policies, such as seizing and expropriating unused, unfarmed land that private corporations set aside long ago and giving the land to peasants. The U.S. intelligence community deemed such plans communist in nature. This led CIA director Allen Dulles to fear that Guatemala would become a "Soviet beachhead in the western hemisphere". Dulles' concern reverberated within the CIA and the Eisenhower administration, in the context of the anti-communist fears of the McCarthyist era. Árbenz instigated sweeping land reform acts that antagonized the U.S.-...
Mexico has promised to stem the flow of Central American migrants to the United States by tightening control at its notoriously insecure border with Guatemala, but the scene on the ground is business as usual. Dozens of Central Americans were paying just 1.50 US dollars to cross the Suchiate river dividing Guatemala and Mexico. They floated across on improvised rafts of inner tubes and wooden boards, in full view of Mexican police on the shore and immigration agents posted on a bridge overhead. Riding a raft to Mexico, 56-year-old Guatemalan Luisa Fuentes said promises of a Mexican crackdown seemed to her to be little more than talk. Mexican politicians generally see little upside in cracking down on migrants who simply pass through their country before slipping into the US like many M...
A speech by Bishop Álvaro Leonel Ramazzini Imeri from San Marcos in Guatemala, CIDSE Conference 13 & 14 September 2011 With regard to 'inclusive growth' Bishop Ramazzini draws attention to issues such as the ecological limits of our planet, the role of extractive industries, the quality of life of the poor, and the role of volunteering and domestic work of women. Moreover, Ramazzini questions whether putting the 'green economy' into practice will imply a change in our consumption and an honest redistribution of wealth. He also wonders whether the EU will be able to be more coherent in its policies to support development; stopping subsidies to its farmers, supporting regulations on land use, rethinking Free Trade Agreements and reconsidering migration policies.

HARRY THOMAS DANVERS did not begin his artistic career until he arrived in Guatemala in the early 70s. There he began to study drawing in the Escuela Nacionalde Artes Plasticas in Guatemala City. His teacher was Juan Antonio Franco, who in addition to have studied in Europe also worked on a lot of murals of Diego Rivera in Mexico. He had his first exhibition in Antigua, Guatemala in 1980 and has since continued to have exhibitions there in different galleries as well as Guatemala City. In the year 2000 he won the Arturo Martinez national art contest in landscape. The idea with the miniature paintings is to make something small seem large, always using the local environment as a backdrop with native people predominating to add to the movement. Guatemala Travel Video Guide - Guatemala has a rich and distinctive culture from the long mix of elements from Spain and the native Maya people. This diverse history and the natural beauty of the land have created a destination rich in interesting and scenic sites. Spanning a mountainous slice of Central America immediately south of Mexico, Guatemala is loaded with incredible natural, historical and cultural appeal. As the birthplace and heartland of the ancient Maya, the country is in many ways defined by the legacy of this early civilization. Their rainforest cities were abandoned centuries ago, but Maya people continue to thrive in the Guatemalan highlands, where traditions and religious rituals, mingled with Catholic practices, endure to form the richest and most distinctive indigeno...
