Having been ejected, Ann and Jeremy had to resort to a broadcast to watch the Rwanda Day speeches. This is Rwanda President Paul Kagame.

Rwanda Day San Francisco: Bay View journalists get the boot

October 6, 2016

Rwanda Day-San Francisco was a bad day for identity politics. Rwandan President Paul Kagame stepped to the podium and said that he was happy to be in San Francisco because it’s so diverse, seeming not to understand that his guest speaker, Rev. Rick Warren, champion of the 2008 Prop 8 ballot measure banning same sex marriage, wouldn’t appeal to San Francisco’s diverse population.

Alfred Olango, from US-backed persecution in Uganda to police execution in US

October 2, 2016

The El Cajon police shooting of Alfred Olango is one of the most recent police shootings of an unarmed Black man to make national and international headlines and inspire Black Lives Matter protests. Olango and his family fled war and persecution by the government of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, who has ruled Uganda with an iron fist since 1986. KPFA’s Ann Garrison filed this report.

On Runoko Rashidi’s second visit to India, in April 1998, he was welcomed royally in Trivandrum, the capital of Kerala, India, by the Kerala Dalit Panthers, whose leader, a great man named K. Ambu Jakshan, is seated at the left. The poem is a tribute to him. Rashidi is in the center, and on the right is Raju Thomas. The Dalits are also known as the Black Untouchables of India.

A salute to the Black Panthers – at home and abroad!

September 30, 2016

As we salute and celebrate the noble legacy of the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense, it is worth noting the influence of the Black Panthers on Black peoples and organizations around the world in places many of us might not be aware of. For example, in my early days of research and exploration, I found out about the Dalit Panthers of India and the Aboriginal Australian Black Panther Party.

Why I am on the Women’s Boat to Gaza

September 28, 2016

Sunday night, Sept. 18, 2016. As my “industry” colleagues attend Emmy parties and dress for the red carpet, I stand on the chilly docks of Ajaccio, Corsica, in the wee hours of the morning awaiting the arrival of a small sailboat called the Zaytouna-Oliva. What possessed me to travel 6,000 miles from L.A. and my family in order to brave the Mediterranean Sea in what is now beginning to look like the smallest vessel on the docks? Why join yet another effort to break the Israeli-Egyptian blockade of Gaza?

Dr. Leopold Munyakazi deported to Rwanda

September 27, 2016

Dr. Léopold Munyakazi was deported to Rwanda early this morning. The linguist, scholar and former French professor at Goucher College was arrested shortly after giving several lectures at Northeastern University college campuses in which he said that the Rwandan war of the 1990s was a class conflict, not an ethnic conflict, and that it was therefore incorrectly characterized as genocide.

These Rwandan Hutu refugees seek safety in a camp in the Congo. Called genocidaires – or perpetrators of genocide – Hutus have been pursued relentlessly wherever they fled by Kagame’s forces.

Declaration of genocide against Rwandan Hutu

September 19, 2016

Since 1994, Rwanda and the international community invested tremendous resources in acknowledging, documenting, remembering and bringing to justice the perpetrators of the genocide against Tutsi. Sadly, though well documented by the international community and known by the victims, there has never been an acknowledgement that the crimes committed against the Rwandan Hutu fully satisfy the definition of genocide according to the Genocide Convention of 1948.

Uganda: ‘A Brilliant Genocide’

September 18, 2016

“A Brilliant Genocide” tells the story of the Acholi Genocide that President Yoweri Museveni and his army committed against the Acholi people during their 20-year war and occupation of the Acholi homeland in northern Uganda, from 1986 to 2006. Museveni waged that war in the name of fighting Kony and claimed to be protecting the Acholi, not destroying them. RT will air “A Brilliant Genocide” on Oct. 1.

Baba Jahahara Amen-RA Alkebulan-Ma’at stands with thousands of other reparationists on Emancipation Day, 1 Mosiah (August) 2016, for three minutes of silence for the Ancestors on the Westminster Bridge in London, England. Behind them is the British Parliament – House of Commons and House of Lords – with the “Big Ben” clock tower, where a major rally was later held. Petitions demanding reparations were also delivered to No. 10 Downing Street, the official residence of the British prime minister.

Reparationists take the power, and da funk, to Parliament in London!

August 29, 2016

On 1 Mosiah (August), thousands of Pan Afrikanists from around England, Europe, the Afrikan continent, the Caribbean, Australia and other former colonies like West Papua – accompanied by billions of our Afrikan forbearers! – assembled in London for major mass actions. In this, the Annual Afrikan Emancipation Day Reparations March, the themes of “Stop the Maangamizi: We charge genocide and ecocide” and “Demand reparatory justice and reparations” united all.

Who is killing indigenous people in Beni, DR Congo?

August 28, 2016

Beni Territory is a vivid example of the phrase, “Everybody wants a piece of Congo.” Beni Territory is rich in oil, timber, gold, diamonds, wolfram, coltan and cassiterite. Now the people of Beni are being massacred for their land and its riches. KPFA’s Ann Garrison filed this report after speaking to a Congolese human rights defender and author of “Congolese Genocides from Leopold II to Paul Kagame,” Boniface Musavuli.

President Pierre Nkurunziza, the current president of Burundi, is castigated by Western leaders and some members of Burundi’s political elites, but hugely popular with Burundi’s rural peasant majority.

Unworthy victims: Houthis and Hutus

August 25, 2016

Last week the ‪U.S. helped its ‪‎Saudi pals bomb another hospital and school in Yemen. Don’t imagine that its intentions are any more humanitarian in‪ Burundi just because they’re not selling fighter bomber jets and guided bombs to their pal Paul Kagame, Rwanda’s president for life. Kagame is intent on bringing down President Pierre Nkurunziza’s government in Burundi, as Saudi sheikhs are intent on bringing down the Houthi government in Yemen.

Rwanda, the Clinton dynasty and the case of Dr. Léopold Munyakazi

July 28, 2016

I answered some heartbreaking calls from Dr. Léopold Munyakazi phoning from an Alabama jail this week. Dr. Munyakazi is a gentle Rwandan born scholar, with a PhD in linguistics and further advanced degrees in French and African linguistics. He has lost his immigration case in the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals and will all but certainly be deported to Rwanda to face prison or worse.

The horrors of war and guilt of killing sear the soul of even the toughest soldier. This is Fallujah, Iraq, in 2007.

Indeed, Western Civilization is in a war

July 25, 2016

Republican Newt Gingrich, long known for his fascistic views, recently declared that “Western Civilization is in a war.” Truth be told, he is on solid ground. Indeed, Western Civilization is in a war, a war that has been raging since its inception. It has been at war with itself and with the entire non-European world for centuries. Long before anyone heard of Jihadists, Al-Qaeda and ISIL, Western Civilization was at war.

Demanding an end to institutional anti-Black racism by the Israel government, hundreds of Jewish citizens of Ethiopian heritage marched through the streets of downtown Tel Aviv on July 3, renewing demonstrations that had galvanized the community a year earlier. The mostly young Ethiopian-Israeli protesters called for abusive police officers to be jailed and blocked a main street in front of the headquarters of the Ministry of Defense.

July 10, 2016

The PS Imberakuri party is deeply concerned and hereby openly denounces the court’s ruling in the case of its Secretary of Mobilization Mr. Jean Baptiste Icyitonderwa, in which he had appealed his six-year sentence on charges stemming from sending a letter to the prime minister expressing concerns on how student loans for students in universities and institutions of higher learning were awarded.

Brexit

June 29, 2016

The national referendum determining Britain’s exit from the 28-nation body called the European Union – dubbed “Brexit” by the hip British press – has sent shock waves around the world. That it has done so is a reflection of how narrow the national – and global – media is and how little they see of the world they purport to cover. It is also a window into the world of rising right-wing nationalism – and a walk away from the very notion of globalism.

Obama’s AFRICOM nominee would expand terror war, seek authority to assassinate

June 27, 2016

Earlier this week, the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee questioned Marine Lt. Gen. Thomas Waldhauser, President Obama’s nominee to become the next four-star general commanding AFRICOM, the U.S. Africa Command. Most of the discussion focused on the conflict in Libya, where territory is now controlled by seven different forces. KPFA’s Ann Garrison has more.
