Around 11:36 a.m. CDT, West Memphis police officer Bill Evans initiated a traffic stop on a white Dodge Caravan minivan that was travelling on Interstate 40 eastbound towards Airport Road.[2] According to a spokesperson for the Arkansas State Police, Officer Evans was "running drug interdiction", and the vehicle had license plates from Ohio. Sergeant Brandon Paudert provided backup for Evans. Upon Paudert's arrival at the scene, Evans attempted to frisk Jerry Kane. Suddenly, Kane turned and attacked Evans in a scuffle down an embankment into a ditch. At that moment Joe Kane emerged from the passenger door of the van and opened fire with an AK-47. Paudert ran to the rear of Evan's police cruiser and returned fire with three shots from his .40 caliber handgun through the windows and taillight of Evan's cruiser, in an attempt to hit Kane firing from the other side. He then took cover behind the hood of his cruiser which was parked directly behind Evan's cruiser. Kane then fired multiple shots from his AK-47 through the hood of the car, striking Paudert in the head with a ricochet.[3][nb 1]
Both officers were fatally wounded; Paudert, 39, died at the scene, and Evans, 38, died at the hospital. The suspects returned to their van and sped away.[4] A FedEx driver from Houston witnessed the shooting and called 911; neither officer could make an "officer down" call.[5]
As officers of other Arkansas law enforcement agencies - including the State Police and Fish and Game Commission - began searching for the suspects, Crittenden County Sheriff Dick Busby and Chief Enforcement Officer W. A. Wren stopped a minivan believed to be the suspects' at a Wal-Mart Supercenter.[2] Authorities also searched many vehicles on I-40 for the suspects.[4] Busby and Wren were then allegedly shot by one or more of the suspects, leading to a shootout.[2] Dozens of other officers surrounded the van, and the Kanes were shot to death. Busby was shot in the arm, and Wren in the abdomen; both were taken to The Regional Medical Center at Memphis (Tennessee) and survived.[4]
The day after the shootings, Arkansas State Police identified the suspects as 45-year-old Jerry R. Kane Jr. and his 16-year-old son Joseph T. Kane. Jerry Kane had expressed sentiment against federal and local government online, and was accused of doing the same in person. Kane served three days in jail near Carrizozo, New Mexico for driving without a license and concealing his identity. He posted a $1,500 bond. After that incident, he complained of a "Nazi checkpoint".[citation needed]
Based on a 2004 conversation with Jerry Kane, Clark County Sheriff Gene Kelly expressed concern that Kane would be dangerous toward law enforcement. According to Kelly, Kane had complained about being "enslaved" by a judge who had sentenced him to serve six days of community service for driving with an expired license plate and no seat belt.[citation needed]
Insurance analyst J. J. MacNab observed that Kane ran a debt evasion business.[6] Jerry Kane also posted $10,000 bond (which a judge later ordered forfeited) on charges of forgery and attempted grand theft of a motor vehicle filed in Miamisburg, Ohio. Joseph Kane
Jasper Joseph Inman Kane (March 19, 1894, San Diego – August 25, 1975, Santa Monica, California) was a prolific American film director, film producer, film editor and screenwriter. He is best known for his extensive directorship and focus on Western films.
Biography
Kane began his career as a professional cellist. In 1934 he took an interest in film directing and, starting in 1935, he co-directed serials for Mascot Pictures and Republic Pictures. He soon became Republic's top Western film director.
Kane's first directorial credit was for The Fighting Marines (1935). When Mascot Pictures and several other small film companies amalgamated into Republic Pictures in 1935, Kane became staff director, remaining at the studio until it ceased production in 1958. He piloted many Gene Autry and Roy Rogers movies and directed John Wayne in films such as The Lawless Nineties (1936) and Flame of Barbary Coast (1944), and Joseph Schildkraut on The Cheaters (1945). Between 1935 and his death in 1975 he directed 119 films and numerous television series episodes.

Roy Rogers
Roy Rogers (born Leonard Franklin Slye; November 5, 1911 – July 6, 1998) was an American singer and cowboy actor who was one of the most popular Western stars of his era. Known as the "King of the Cowboys", he appeared in over 100 films and numerous radio and television episodes of The Roy Rogers Show. In many of his films and television episodes, he appeared with his wife Dale Evans, his golden palomino Trigger, and his German Shepherd dog Bullet. His show ran on radio for nine years before moving to television from 1951 through 1957. His productions usually featured a sidekick, often Pat Brady, Andy Devine, or George "Gabby" Hayes. In his later years, Rogers lent his name to the Roy Rogers Restaurants franchised chain.
Biography
Early life
Rogers (Leonard Slye) was born to Mattie (née Womack) and Andrew "Andy" Slye in Cincinnati, Ohio. The family lived in a tenement building on 2nd Street, where Riverfront Stadium would later be constructed (Rogers would later joke that he was born at second base). Dissatisfied with his job and city life, Andy and his brother Will built a 12-by-50-foot (3.7 m × 15.2 m) houseboat from salvage lumber, and in July 1912 the Slye family traveled up the Ohio River towards Portsmouth, Ohio. Desiring a more stable existence in Portsmouth, they purchased land on which to build a house, but the Great Flood of 1913 allowed them to move the houseboat to their property and continue living in it on dry land.

Jesse James
Jesse Woodson James (September 5, 1847 – April 3, 1882) was an American outlaw, guerrilla, gang leader, bank robber, train robber, and murderer from the state of Missouri and the most famous member of the James-Younger Gang. Jesse and his brother Frank James were Confederate guerrillas or Bushwhackers during the Civil War. They were accused of participating in atrocities committed against Union soldiers, including the Centralia Massacre. After the war, as members of various gangs of outlaws, they robbed banks, stagecoaches, and trains.
The James brothers were most active as members of their own gang from about 1866 until 1876, when as a result of their attempted robbery of a bank in Northfield, Minnesota, several members of the gang were captured or killed. They continued in crime for several years, recruiting new members, but were under increasing pressure from law enforcement. On April 3, 1882, Jesse James was killed by Robert Ford, a member of his own gang who hoped to collect a reward on James' head. Already a celebrity when he was alive, James became a legendary figure of the Wild West after his death.

Around 11:36 a.m. CDT, West Memphis police officer Bill Evans initiated a traffic stop on a white Dodge Caravan minivan that was travelling on Interstate 40 eastbound towards Airport Road.[2] According to a spokesperson for the Arkansas State Police, Officer Evans was "running drug interdiction", and the vehicle had license plates from Ohio. Sergeant Brandon Paudert provided backup for Evans. Upon Paudert's arrival at the scene, Evans attempted to frisk Jerry Kane. Suddenly, Kane turned and attacked Evans in a scuffle down an embankment into a ditch. At that moment Joe Kane emerged from the passenger door of the van and opened fire with an AK-47. Paudert ran to the rear of Evan's police cruiser and returned fire with three shots from his .40 caliber handgun through the windows and taillight of Evan's cruiser, in an attempt to hit Kane firing from the other side. He then took cover behind the hood of his cruiser which was parked directly behind Evan's cruiser. Kane then fired multiple shots from his AK-47 through the hood of the car, striking Paudert in the head with a ricochet.[3][nb 1]
Both officers were fatally wounded; Paudert, 39, died at the scene, and Evans, 38, died at the hospital. The suspects returned to their van and sped away.[4] A FedEx driver from Houston witnessed the shooting and called 911; neither officer could make an "officer down" call.[5]
As officers of other Arkansas law enforcement agencies - including the State Police and Fish and Game Commission - began searching for the suspects, Crittenden County Sheriff Dick Busby and Chief Enforcement Officer W. A. Wren stopped a minivan believed to be the suspects' at a Wal-Mart Supercenter.[2] Authorities also searched many vehicles on I-40 for the suspects.[4] Busby and Wren were then allegedly shot by one or more of the suspects, leading to a shootout.[2] Dozens of other officers surrounded the van, and the Kanes were shot to death. Busby was shot in the arm, and Wren in the abdomen; both were taken to The Regional Medical Center at Memphis (Tennessee) and survived.[4]
The day after the shootings, Arkansas State Police identified the suspects as 45-year-old Jerry R. Kane Jr. and his 16-year-old son Joseph T. Kane. Jerry Kane had expressed sentiment against federal and local government online, and was accused of doing the same in person. Kane served three days in jail near Carrizozo, New Mexico for driving without a license and concealing his identity. He posted a $1,500 bond. After that incident, he complained of a "Nazi checkpoint".[citation needed]
Based on a 2004 conversation with Jerry Kane, Clark County Sheriff Gene Kelly expressed concern that Kane would be dangerous toward law enforcement. According to Kelly, Kane had complained about being "enslaved" by a judge who had sentenced him to serve six days of community service for driving with an expired license plate and no seat belt.[citation needed]
Insurance analyst J. J. MacNab observed that Kane ran a debt evasion business.[6] Jerry Kane also posted $10,000 bond (which a judge later ordered forfeited) on charges of forgery and attempted grand theft of a motor vehicle filed in Miamisburg, Ohio.
