I checked out some sumo wrestling matches in Tokyo, Japan. According to my program handout, sumo has over 1,000 years of history. So in other words, fat dudes have been fighting each other in a circular ring since ancient times. Sounds pretty buckwild if you ask me.

EXPLANATION: I try to keep my equipment as simple as possible. 90% of the time, all I use to film is my Sony RX100 M3, and all I use for audio is my Samson Go Mic (which I use to record voiceovers after filming). Occasionally I use the Zoom H1 for audio if I want to record audio in-field. As for the Pixi tripod, I sometimes use it while filming food, but most of the time I use it to mount my Samson Go Mic on a desk for voiceovers (in conjunction with the other accessories, listed below).

EXPLANATION: Because I'm often traveling, I prefer to have the lightest, smallest, most versatile components available. Therefore, I use bits and pieces from the above gear sets, and these bits and pieces can be connected together in a huge variety of ways. For example, they can be made into a long selfie stick, they can be mounted to my tripod to make it extra-tall, and they can be used with my tripod and Go Mic to position the microphone directly in front of my face while I'm recording voiceovers at a desk.

EXPLANATION: To improve sound quality for voiceovers, I place a mic cover on the Samson Go Mic, then use an elastic band to hang the pop filter on top. This is not the best audio protection available, but it is the most minimalistic and space-efficient gear for traveling. The mic cover can also be used on the rare occasion that I record audio with the Zoom H1.

EXPLANATION: Anker's lipstick-sized powerbanks are small yet powerful. Ryogoku bustles with parties for viewing the blooming cherry blossoms in spring along the Sumida-gawa River and is animated with firework exhibitions in summer. This town has two major symbols: Ryogoku Kokugikan (sumo stadium), with its large copper-sheeted roof (shaped like a square with rounded corners), and the Edo-Tokyo Museum, best described as "enormous" with its height of over 62 meters and its appearance of a high-floored storehouse. A realistic diorama in the museum and the sumo wrestlers add to the "old town charm" of Edo, and the architectures also add to this feel.The Edo-Tokyo Museum provides a glimpse into both past and present Tokyo. The permanent exhibition rooms, named Edo Zone and Tokyo Zone are superb. Edo Zone reproduces the town during the Edo Period (1603-1867) by utilizing broad space and extending the height by removal of the flooring between the 5th and 6th floors. Edo Zone is separated from Tokyo Zone by the restored wooden Nihonbashi Bridge of the Edo Period. This bridge is half the length of the original. Elaborate models of feudal lord mansions and tenements, as well as meticulously crafted dioramas make visitors feel as if they can actually "hear" conversations among the townspeople.

Ryōgoku
Ryōgoku (両国) is a neighborhood in Sumida, Tokyo. It is surrounded by various neighborhoods in Sumida, Chūō, and Taitō wards: Yokoami, Midori, Chitose, Higashi Nihonbashi, and Yanagibashi.
In 1659, the Ryōgoku Bridge was built, spanning the Sumida River just upstream of its confluence with the Kanda River. Its name, meaning "two provinces," came from its joining Edo (the forerunner of Tokyo in Musashi Province) and Shimōsa Province. The neighborhood derived its name from that of the bridge.
The Forty-seven Ronin avenged the death of their lord, Asano Naganori, by breaking into the mansion of his enemy, Kira Yoshinaka, in 1703. Part of the mansion has been preserved in a public park in Ryōgoku.
Ryōgoku Station opened in 1904, bringing rail transportation to the area.
It is regarded as the heartland of professional sumo. Most training stables or heya are based there. The first Ryōgoku Kokugikan stadium for sumo was completed in 1909. The present one was built in 1985 in the Yokoami neighborhood north of Ryōgoku. Three of professional sumo's six annual official tournaments take place there.

Ryōgoku Kokugikan
Ryōgoku Kokugikan (両国国技館, Ryōgoku Kokugikan), also known as Ryougoku Sumo Hall, is an indoor sporting arena located in the Yokoami neighborhood (bordering to the Ryōgoku neighborhood) of Sumida, one of the 23 wards of Tokyo in Japan, next to the Edo-Tokyo Museum. It is the third building built in Tokyo associated with the name kokugikan. The current building was opened in 1985 and has a capacity of 13,000 people. It is mainly used for sumo wrestling tournaments (honbasho) and hosts the Hatsu (new year) honbasho in January, the Natsu (summer) honbasho in May, and the Aki (autumn) honbasho in September. It also houses a museum about sumo. The venue is also used for other indoor events, such as boxing, pro wrestling, and music concerts. In past years, it has hosted the finals of New Japan Pro Wrestling's annual G1 Climax tournament as well as the Invasion Attack and King of Pro-Wrestling events. On July 4, 2015, WWE hosted its The Beast in the East event in the arena.

Sumo
Sumo (相撲, sumō) is a competitive full-contact wrestling sport where a rikishi (wrestler) attempts to force another wrestler out of a circular ring (dohyō) or into touching the ground with anything other than the soles of the feet. The characters 相撲 literally mean "striking one another".
The sport originated in Japan, the only country where it is practiced professionally. It is generally considered a gendai budō (a modern Japanese martial art), though this definition is misleading as the sport has a history spanning many centuries. Many ancient traditions have been preserved in sumo, and even today the sport includes many ritual elements, such as the use of salt purification, from the days when sumo was used in the Shinto religion. Life as a wrestler is highly regimented, with rules laid down by the Japan Sumo Association. Most sumo wrestlers are required to live in communal "sumo training stables", known in Japanese as heya, where all aspects of their daily lives—from meals to their manner of dress—are dictated by strict tradition.

Ryogoku bustles with parties for viewing the blooming cherry blossoms in spring along the Sumida-gawa River and is animated with firework exhibitions in summer. This town has two major symbols: Ryogoku Kokugikan (sumo stadium), with its large copper-sheeted roof (shaped like a square with rounded corners), and the Edo-Tokyo Museum, best described as "enormous" with its height of over 62 meters and its appearance of a high-floored storehouse. A realistic diorama in the museum and the sumo wrestlers add to the "old town charm" of Edo, and the architectures also add to this feel.The Edo-Tokyo Museum provides a glimpse into both past and present Tokyo. Occasionally I use the Zoom H1 for audio if I want to record audio in-field. As for the Pixi tripod, I sometimes use it while filming food, but most of the time I use it to mount my Samson Go Mic on a desk for voiceovers (in conjunction with the other accessories, listed below).

For example, they can be made into a long selfie stick, they can be mounted to my tripod to make it extra-tall, and they can be used with my tripod and Go Mic to position the microphone directly in front of my face while I'm recording voiceovers at a desk.

EXPLANATION: To improve sound quality for voiceovers, I place a mic cover on the Samson Go Mic, then use an elastic band to hang the pop filter on top. The mic cover can also be used on the rare occasion that I record audio with the Zoom H1.

Chankonabe (ちゃんこ鍋) is a Japanese sumo wrestling food. Tokyo (東京), Japan, is one of the world's greatest cities, and there's so much to do and see when you visit. From temples and shrines, to gardens and museums, you'll never run out of attractions. Out of all the things you could do, I've chosen a top 25 list for this awesome city (and just so you know food is my first choice in Tokyo)!
1. Ameya-Yokochō (アメヤ横丁) - A giant open air market that offers clothes, cosmetics, food, and restaurants and bars.
2. Meiji Shrine (明治神宮) - This Shinto shrine, surrounded by beautiful forest, is extremely significant.
3. Ryogoku Kokugikan (両国国技館) - Even if it's not fight season, you can go to the free sumo museum and eat sumo chankonabe.
4. Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden (新宿御苑) - The garden is a beautiful attraction in Tokyo, with French gardens, Japanese gardens, and a green house.
5. Ginza (銀座) / Yurakucho (有楽町) - Ginza is a great area of town for upscale shopping and dining, while Yurakucho is famous for Izakaya bars and restaurants under the railroad track.
6. Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building (東京都庁舎) - There are a lot of things to do in Tokyo where you have to pay, but here, you can go to the 45th floor for free.
7. Tsukiji Market (築地市場) - One of the most famous attractions in all of Tokyo is the Tsukiji Market (築地市場), the biggest seafood market in the world.
8. Shibuya (渋谷区) - With the busiest intersection in the world, Shibuya (渋谷区) is also home to shopping and restaurant.
9. Sumida River (隅田川) - At Tokyo's Sumida River, you can either just walk around the park and enjoy the riverside views, or you can take the Tokyo Cruise in a boat.
10. Tokyo Imperial Palace (皇居) - This is the home of the emperor of Japan. To enter the grounds, you have to make a tour booking on the official website
11. Ueno Park (上野公園), Tokyo National Museum (東京国立博物館) - Ueno Park is a huge public park in Tokyo with shrines, gardens and a number of museums.
12. Tokyo Skytree (東京スカイツリー) - They call it Tokyo's biggest attractions. It's a huge communications tower with various viewing decks and galleries.
13. Harajuku (原宿), Takeshita Street (竹下通り) - Famous for its street market and cosplay that takes place, this is a place in the city to see and be seen.
14. Senso-ji (金龍山浅草寺) - Visiting this temple is one of the top things to do in Tokyo, frequented by both tourists and religious pilgrims. It's the oldest temple in Tokyo.
15. Edo-Tokyo Museum (江戸東京博物館) - It looks a little like a UFO, but it's one of Tokyo's main museums, that aims to preserve the history of the city.
16. Fine Dining - Let's just face it, Tokyo is one of the best cities in the world for high class dining - atmosphere, presentation, food, it's all just stunning!
17. Akihabara Electric Town (秋葉原電気街) - If you love electronics and gaming, you're going to love the area of Akihabara. You'll also find those infamous maid cafes here.
18. Tokyo Stock Exchange (東京証券取引所) - Another free attraction in Tokyo is to be a guest at the stock exchange where you can see the Japanese Nikkei being traded.
19. Roppongi (六本木) - Home to the Mori Art Museum and a hotspot for nightlife in the city, Roppongi is an exciting area of town.
20. Odaiba (お台場) - This area of Tokyo is full of things to do like Legoland, and Palette Town, an indoor amusement park. It's also known as Tokyo's entertainment island.
21. Yoyogi Park (代々木公園) - Located next to Meiji Shrine, and just a short distance from Harajuku and Shinjuku, this park is popular for exercise and dance.
22. Nezu (根津), Yanaka (谷中 (台東区) - Tokyo is a truly modern city, but there are a couple places like Nezu and Yanaka that have held strong to their traditional and cultural roots.
23. Onsen (温泉) - You've got to strip down naked before you can enter a Japanese public bath.
24. Mount Takao (高尾山) - Just 50 km from central Tokyo, this mountain is popular for climbing and is a sacred religious mountains. Makes a good day trip from Tokyo.
25. Food - Finally, food is the reason I visited Japan, and I think eating is by all means one of the best things to do in Tokyo. Food is everywhere, and not only does it taste amazing, but the care that goes into Japanese cuisine is incredible.

Occasionally I use the Zoom H1 for audio if I want to record audio in-field. As for the Pixi tripod, I sometimes use it while filming food, but most of the time I use it to mount my Samson Go Mic on a desk for voiceovers (in conjunction with the other accessories, listed below).

For example, they can be made into a long selfie stick, they can be mounted to my tripod to make it extra-tall, and they can be used with my tripod and Go Mic to position the microphone directly in front of my face while I'm recording voiceovers at a desk.

When I was in Tokyo, unfortunately it was not during the time of the year when sumo wrestling fights taking place in the city. However, that still doesn't mean that you can't go to the sumo area of Tokyo and walk around and of course eat. So one day we headed over to Ryogoku and first we went to the sumo stadium, where we walked around the small but free museum. And that's where I found the "sumo food map" - which happens to be available to any tourist or anybody who grabs it at the stadium.
I was pretty thrilled, after walking around for a few more minutes, I studied the map, and decided to walk around the neighborhood to discover some of the sumo restaurants available in the area. A few of them looked to be closed, but then finally I settled on a restaurant by the name of Chanko Tomoegata (巴潟). From the outside of the restaurant, you could see some sumo wrestler flags waving, but the restaurant actually didn't look all that busy. So we stepped inside, and using whatever communication we could, the receptionist told us that the restaurant was full. At first I was pretty disappointed, but then she just said to wait a few minutes and there would be space. Little did I know that the main part of the restaurant was upstairs, so we didn't even know how busy it was until some people started coming down.
The good news was, the wait only took about 15 minutes or so, and we were led up the staircase into sumo food heaven. The restaurant was actually a little bit on the expensive side, and I had no clue what I was ordering or what I was doing, all I know is that I needed to try a dish known as chankonabe (ちゃんこ鍋), which is like a sumo stew. It's supposed to be hearty, filling, calorie rich, and just overall delicious - I guess that's why Chanko Tomoegata (巴潟) was so busy. Unfortunately, there were no sumo wrestlers eating there, but mostly just business men and women... but anyway was still pretty cool. Everything in the restaurant was sumo themed, even our teacups had pictures of famous sumo wrestlers on them. I immediately loved the restaurant as soon as we walked in.
At first I was going to order a beautiful amazing and giant looking hot pot of soup with like 20 different ingredients in it, but then I realized that that was a little bit out of my price range, and would've cost about $30 per person - originally I had thought that it would be $30 for the whole pot. So the waitress kindly directed us to their lunch special known as Sumoheyafu Higawari Chanko, which is think was a type of chankonabe (ちゃんこ鍋) in a set. Ying and I both decided to go for, but she got just the normal platter, and I got the one with an extra dish of sashimi on the side.
Chankonabe (ちゃんこ鍋) is a sumo wrestlers meal. The version I got was like a big hot pot of miso soup, boiled with nice pieces of thin pork, a lot of napa cabbage, and some other vegetables and herbs. My meal came with an entire tray, so along with the chankonabe (ちゃんこ鍋), there was also different side dishes including a bowl of sashimi which was incredibly delicious. Since it was so cold outside when I was visiting Tokyo, this sumo feast was incredibly comforting and a warming meal. The miso soup broth was so smooth and so flavorful, and the mix of vegetables and meat and herbs was just marvelous. The other side dishes were equally delightful, and the entire meat at Chanko Tomoegata (巴潟) in Tokyo was excellent. It was just so cool to eat food like a sumo wrestler!

EXPLANATION: I try to keep my equipment as simple as possible. 90% of the time, all I use to film is my Sony RX100 M3, and all I use for audio is my Samson Go Mic (which I use to record voiceovers after filming). Occasionally I use the Zoom H1 for audio if I want to record audio in-field. As for the Pixi tripod, I sometimes use it while filming food, but most of the time I use it to mount my Samson Go Mic on a desk for voiceovers (in conjunction with the other accessories, listed below).

EXPLANATION: Because I'm often traveling, I prefer to have the lightest, smallest, most versatile components available. Therefore, I use bits and pieces from the above gear sets, and these bits and pieces can be connected together in a huge variety of ways. For example, they can be made into a long selfie stick, they can be mounted to my tripod to make it extra-tall, and they can be used with my tripod and Go Mic to position the microphone directly in front of my face while I'm recording voiceovers at a desk.

EXPLANATION: To improve sound quality for voiceovers, I place a mic cover on the Samson Go Mic, then use an elastic band to hang the pop filter on top. This is not the best audio protection available, but it is the most minimalistic and space-efficient gear for traveling. The mic cover can also be used on the rare occasion that I record audio with the Zoom H1.

I checked out some sumo wrestling matches in Tokyo, Japan. According to my program handout, sumo has over 1,000 years of history. So in other words, fat dudes have been fighting each other in a circular ring since ancient times. Sounds pretty buckwild if you ask me.
