RIO DE JANEIRO — How much gold is actually in a modern Olympic gold medal?
Not much, according to a recent report in Forbes. A gold medal at the Rio 2016 Olympics is composed of 1.2 percent of gold with 99.9 percent purity. The rest is made of silver with 92.5 percent purity.
Instead, sustainability and accessibility are the two factors that make the medals this year special. The silver was recycled from leftover X-ray plates and mirrors, the bronze was recycled from waste at the Mint of Brazil, while the gold was mined without mercury.
A gold medal is worth about $564 based on the current price of gold and silver, which is likely to fluctuate in the future.
According to Forbes, a total of 2,488 medals, including 812 gold, 812 silver and 864 bronze medals, were made for the Rio 2016 Olympics. All of the medals measure 85 centimeters in diameter and weigh 500 grams.

Gary and Paul O'Donovan won Ireland's first ever Olympic medal in rowing, and they seem to be taking it in their stride.
Brothers Gary and Paul O'Donovan from Skibbereen in County Cork have created Irish sporting history by winning a silver medal in the lightweight double sculls at the Olympic regatta in Rio. It is the first ever Olympic medal for Irish rowing.
After a dramatic final the Irish boat finished less than a second behind the new Olympic champions France with Norway in third place.
The Irish brothers made a characteristically slow start and were fourth after the 500m mark but only 1.41 seconds behind the French. They were still in fourth spot at the halfway stage but as they had done in the semi-final, they upped the ante at the business end of the race and were consistently travelling faster than any of the other two boats.
By the 1500m mark they were in the silver medal position and were hunting down the French who looked to be tiring. Now travelling at 18 kph the Irish boats was rapidly closing on the long time leaders but the French just held them off. Ireland finished second in 6.31.23.
It was a heroic and historic performance from the O'Donovan's who only starting to concentrate on the double sculls a couple of years ago but underlined their potential when they won the European championships earlier this summer.
The history making O'Donovan brothers have no intention of resting on their laurels despite the historic nature of their silver medal performance. Once again displaying their deadpan sense of humour, Gary said “Ah sure, it's been a good year,”
“It's been a great year. European champions and Olympic silver medallists. Hopefully there is more to come in the future.
"It was our goal since we qualified. We finished 11th in the world championships and our goal was to win the Olympics but we're not going home disappointed with a silver medal at all.”
According to Paul, they weren't too sure themselves about how the race was unfolidng.
"We didn't know too much of what's going on but the French are a brilliant side. They just had a bit more left in the last 100m and they pulled away. They had a fantastic race and are great guys. We're happy with our result.”
The duo also spoke of their joy at being history makers in Rio.
"Still a bit tired to be even thinking of emotions to be honest with you" said Paul. "But we're very happy."
"We're delighted to be Ireland's first ever Olympic medallists in rowing" explained Gary. "We tried to win the gold medal and we really, really gave it everything out there, but we're delighted to come home with any medal at all and a silver is fantastic.
"We wanted to really go as fast as we could but stuck right in the middle of the race and then move on in the second-half. I think we did that quite well. We knew last year when we qualified that we'd have to beat a very very good French crew that won the World Championships last year.
"Since then, they've gone and made their crew stronger again. So to come so close to beating them and come home with a silver medal is a brilliant result for us."

Olympic medal
An Olympic medal is awarded to successful competitors at one of the Olympic Games. There are three classes of medal: gold, awarded to the winner; silver, awarded to the 1st runner-up; and bronze, awarded to the 2nd runner-up. The granting of awards is laid out in detail in the Olympic protocols.
Medal designs have varied considerably since the first Olympic Games in 1896, particularly in size and weight. A standard obverse (front) design of the medals for the Summer Olympic Games began in 1928 and remained for many years, until its replacement at the 2004 Games as the result of controversy surrounding the use of the Roman Colosseum rather than a building representing the Games' Greek roots. The medals of the Winter Olympic Games never had a common design, but regularly feature snowflakes.
In addition to generally supporting their Olympic athletes, some countries provide sums of money and gifts to medal winners, depending on the classes and number of medals won.

Michael Phelps
Michael Fred Phelps II (born June 30, 1985) is an American competition swimmer and the most decorated Olympian of all time, with a total of 22 medals in three Olympiads. Phelps also holds the all-time records for Olympic gold medals (18, double the second highest record holders), Olympic gold medals in individual events (11), and Olympic medals in individual events for a male (13). In winning eight gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Games, Phelps took the record away from fellow swimmer Mark Spitz (7) for the most first-place finishes at any single Olympic Games. Five of those victories were in individual events, tying the single Games record. In the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, Phelps won four golds and two silver medals, making him the most successful athlete of the Games for the third Olympics in a row.
Phelps is the long course world recordholder in the 100-meter butterfly, 200-meter butterfly and 400-meter individual medley as well as the former long course world recordholder in the 200-meter freestyle and 200-meter individual medley. He has won a total of 77 medals in major international long-course competition, totalling 61 gold, 13 silver, and 3 bronze spanning the Olympics, the World, and the Pan Pacific Championships. Phelps's international titles and record-breaking performances have earned him the World Swimmer of the Year Award seven times and American Swimmer of the Year Award nine times as well as the FINA Swimmer of the Year Award in 2012. His unprecedented Olympic success in 2008 earned Phelps Sports Illustrated magazine's Sportsman of the Year award.

Gary and Paul O'Donovan won Ireland's first ever Olympic medal in rowing, and they seem to be taking it in their stride. Brothers Gary and Paul O'Donovan from Skibbereen in County Cork have created Irish sporting history by winning a silver medal in the lightweight double sculls at the Olympic regatta in Rio. It is the first ever Olympic medal for Irish rowing. After a dramatic final the Irish boat finished less than a second behind the new Olympic champions France with Norway in third place. The Irish brothers made a characteristically slow start and were fourth after the 500m mark but only 1.41 seconds behind the French. They were still in fourth spot at the halfway stage but as they had done in the semi-final, they upped the ante at the business end of the race and were consistently travelling faster than any of the other two boats. By the 1500m mark they were in the silver medal position and were hunting down the French who looked to be tiring. Now travelling at 18 kph the Irish boats was rapidly closing on the long time leaders but the French just held them off. Ireland finished second in 6.31.23. It was a heroic and historic performance from the O'Donovan's who only starting to concentrate on the double sculls a couple of years ago but underlined their potential when they won the European championships earlier this summer. The history making O'Donovan brothers have no intention of resting on their laurels despite the historic nature of their silver medal performance. Once again displaying their deadpan sense of humour, Gary said “Ah sure, it's been a good year,” “It's been a great year. European champions and Olympic silver medallists. Hopefully there is more to come in the future. "It was our goal since we qualified. We finished 11th in the world championships and our goal was to win the Olympics but we're not going home disappointed with a silver medal at all.” According to Paul, they weren't too sure themselves about how the race was unfolidng. "We didn't know too much of what's going on but the French are a brilliant side. They just had a bit more left in the last 100m and they pulled away. They had a fantastic race and are great guys. We're happy with our result.” The duo also spoke of their joy at being history makers in Rio. "Still a bit tired to be even thinking of emotions to be honest with you" said Paul. "But we're very happy." "We're delighted to be Ireland's first ever Olympic medallists in rowing" explained Gary. "We tried to win the gold medal and we really, really gave it everything out there, but we're delighted to come home with any medal at all and a silver is fantastic. "We wanted to really go as fast as we could but stuck right in the middle of the race and then move on in the second-half. I think we did that quite well. We knew last year when we qualified that we'd have to beat a very very good French crew that won the World Championships last year. "Since then, they've gone and made their crew stronger again. So to come so close to beating them and come home with a silver medal is a brilliant result for us." -

Gary and Paul O'Donovan won Ireland's first ever Olympic medal in rowing, and they seem to be taking it in their stride.
Brothers Gary and Paul O'Donovan from Skibbereen in County Cork have created Irish sporting history by winning a silver medal in the lightweight double sculls at the Olympic regatta in Rio. It is the first ever Olympic medal for Irish rowing.
After a dramatic final the Irish boat finished less than a second behind the new Olympic champions France with Norway in third place.
The Irish brothers made a characteristically slow start and were fourth after the 500m mark but only 1.41 seconds behind the French. They were still in fourth spot at the halfway stage but as they had done in the semi-final, they upped the ante at the business end of the race and were consistently travelling faster than any of the other two boats.
By the 1500m mark they were in the silver medal position and were hunting down the French who looked to be tiring. Now travelling at 18 kph the Irish boats was rapidly closing on the long time leaders but the French just held them off. Ireland finished second in 6.31.23.
It was a heroic and historic performance from the O'Donovan's who only starting to concentrate on the double sculls a couple of years ago but underlined their potential when they won the European championships earlier this summer.
The history making O'Donovan brothers have no intention of resting on their laurels despite the historic nature of their silver medal performance. Once again displaying their deadpan sense of humour, Gary said “Ah sure, it's been a good year,”
“It's been a great year. European champions and Olympic silver medallists. Hopefully there is more to come in the future.
"It was our goal since we qualified. We finished 11th in the world championships and our goal was to win the Olympics but we're not going home disappointed with a silver medal at all.”
According to Paul, they weren't too sure themselves about how the race was unfolidng.
"We didn't know too much of what's going on but the French are a brilliant side. They just had a bit more left in the last 100m and they pulled away. They had a fantastic race and are great guys. We're happy with our result.”
The duo also spoke of their joy at being history makers in Rio.
"Still a bit tired to be even thinking of emotions to be honest with you" said Paul. "But we're very happy."
"We're delighted to be Ireland's first ever Olympic medallists in rowing" explained Gary. "We tried to win the gold medal and we really, really gave it everything out there, but we're delighted to come home with any medal at all and a silver is fantastic.
"We wanted to really go as fast as we could but stuck right in the middle of the race and then move on in the second-half. I think we did that quite well. We knew last year when we qualified that we'd have to beat a very very good French crew that won the World Championships last year.
"Since then, they've gone and made their crew stronger again. So to come so close to beating them and come home with a silver medal is a brilliant result for us."

On Sunday, Qin Kai, her boyfriend of six years, decided to make an honest woman out of his special and ask her to marry him. And he chose to do it right at what was actually her big moment. As the Olympics reported, he “climbed up to the stage after He Zi received her silver medal, getting down on one knee while holding a red box with the ring and a glass-encased rose.” So I guess you can just deal with sharing the spotlight at your moment of triumphant Olympic honor, right, gold medal winner Shi Tingmao and bronze finisher Tania Canotto?
