In Kings With Straw Mats, Ira Cohen is both participant and observer to an extraordinary parade of people on pilgrimage into the heart of one of India's greatest sacred celebrations, the Kumbh Mela. With the eye of a filmmaker and the voice of a poet, Cohen introduces an array of holy men as they gather for the event, which occurs only once every 12 years. The Kumbh Mela traces its origin to a Hindu legend, which tells how four drops of the gods' holy elixir fell to earth from a "kumbh," or pitcher, during a battle with jealous demons fighting in the heavens. The celebration takes place at the point where the drops are said to have fallen to earth. The film examines the event's frenzied blend of showmanship, religious devotion, and madness.

Devotees thronged temples, offered and poured milk on snakes to celebrate Hindu festival, 'Nag Panchami' to honour serpent god on Friday.
Devout Hindus in Allahabad city of India's northern Uttar Pradesh state flocked temples of Hindu Lord Shiva and offered milk, water, flowers and fruits to serpents as a unique expression of devotion on the auspicious occasion.
The festival is believed to bring prosperity and happiness, eradicating evil and hardships from people's lives.
"Offering milk to snakes on 'nag panchami' (Hindu snake festival) leads to progress and prosperity. If you offer water to snakes on this auspicious day it wards off hardships and leads to prosperity in family. So, people offer milk to snake god for prosperity and happiness of their families," said a priest Shailendra Kumar Mishra.
Snake charmers lined the streets and attracted devotees to offer milk to snakes.
Followers of Lord Shiva in India's central Madhya Pradesh province also celebrated the festival with religious pageantry.
"It is a festival of fervour. According to our ancient scriptures, culture and tradition, 'nag panchami' is celebrated throughout the country and the world," said a Shailesh Vyas in Ujjain district.
Meanwhile, a priest Raj Kumar Das says one should have true devotion.
"There is only one purpose which is to pay obeisance. It is impossible that god will come in today's time. Gods do not show up. You should have energy and total devotion," said Das.
Snake is associated with two of the divinities of Hindu Trinity - Shiva and Vishnu. As per scriptures, Shiva sports a snake around his neck while Vishnu reclines on a hooded couch created by Shesha Naga. The festival also holds great importance for the snake charmer community.
On the occasion of Naga Panchami, people capture snakes for the festival and later release them back into forests as the government has imposed ban on keeping serpents captive.
It is widely believed that offering prayers to serpents would help devotees to attain salvation. As per the Hindu mythology, it is believed that people who have negative stars in their birth chart should pour milk on snakes and release them into forests.

Devout Hindus throng temples, offer milk to snakes and pour milk on statues of snake god, Lord Shiva, to celebrate festival to honour serpent god.

Devotees thronged temples, offered and poured milk on snakes to celebrate Hindu festival, 'Nag Panchami' to honour serpent god on Friday.
Devout Hindus in Allahabad city of India's northern Uttar Pradesh state flocked temples of Hindu Lord Shiva and offered milk, water, flowers and fruits to serpents as a unique expression of devotion on the auspicious occasion.
The festival is believed to bring prosperity and happiness, eradicating evil and hardships from people's lives.
"Offering milk to snakes on 'nag panchami' (Hindu snake festival) leads to progress and prosperity. If you offer water to snakes on this auspicious day it wards off hardships and leads to prosperity in family. So, people offer milk to snake god for prosperity and happiness of their families," said a priest Shailendra Kumar Mishra.
Snake charmers lined the streets and attracted devotees to offer milk to snakes.
Followers of Lord Shiva in India's central Madhya Pradesh province also celebrated the festival with religious pageantry.
"It is a festival of fervour. According to our ancient scriptures, culture and tradition, 'nag panchami' is celebrated throughout the country and the world," said a Shailesh Vyas in Ujjain district.
Meanwhile, a priest Raj Kumar Das says one should have true devotion.
"There is only one purpose which is to pay obeisance. It is impossible that god will come in today's time. Gods do not show up. You should have energy and total devotion," said Das.
Snake is associated with two of the divinities of Hindu Trinity - Shiva and Vishnu. As per scriptures, Shiva sports a snake around his neck while Vishnu reclines on a hooded couch created by Shesha Naga. The festival also holds great importance for the snake charmer community.
On the occasion of Naga Panchami, people capture snakes for the festival and later release them back into forests as the government has imposed ban on keeping serpents captive.
It is widely believed that offering prayers to serpents would help devotees to attain salvation. As per the Hindu mythology, it is believed that people who have negative stars in their birth chart should pour milk on snakes and release them into forests.

The word Diwali means rows of lighted lamps and it is known as the Festival of Lights because houses and shops are decorated with candles and colourful lights. This shows the victory of light over darkness and good over evil.
Large firework displays are held which celebrate one of the Diwali legends, Rama and his wife Sita.
The fireworks signify Rama’s return to his kingdom after being exiled for 14 years and defeating king Ravana, when the local people set off their own version of fireworks.For many Indians, Diwali honours Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and people will start the new business year at Diwali and some will say prayers to the goddess for a prosperous year ahead.

According to some almanacs the tithi of Sree Hanuman's birth (Sree Hanuman Jayanti) is Ashwin Vadya Chaturdashi while others quote it to be on Chaitra Paurnima. On this day, devotional discourses (kirtan) are held in the temple of Sree Hanuman (Maruti) before sunrise. The kirtan is concluded at sunrise when Sree Hanuman is born. Thereafter the idol of Sree Hanuman is ritualistically worshipped and a holy sacrament of sweets prepared from dry ginger (sunthwada) is distributed.
