The NBA Finals is the championship series of the National Basketball Association. It is played between the Western and Eastern champions of the Conference Finals. The first team to win four games in the seven-game championship round is declared the champion and is awarded the Larry O'Brien Championship Trophy. (Winners from 1946 to 1983 received the Walter A. Brown Trophy redesigned in 1977 to the current form.) The NBA Finals has been played at the end of every NBA and Basketball Association of America season in history, the first being held in 1947.
Between 1985 and 2013, the winner of the NBA Finals was determined through a 2–3–2 format: the first and last two games of the series being played at the arena of the team who earned home court advantage by having the better record during the regular season (the team with home-court went 21–8 between '85 & '13). Most NBA Finals series were played under the 2–2–1–1–1 format (Games 1 and 2 at home for the higher seeded team, Games 3 and 4 at home for the lower seeded team, Game 5 at the higher, Game 6 at the lower, and Game 7 at the higher) prior to 1985; the Finals returned to this format in 2014. The series was named the BAA Finals from 1947 to 1949 and then changed to the NBA World Championship Series from 1950 to 1982. The following two years, the league used Showdown '83 and Showdown '84. It returned to NBA World Championship Series in 1985, before settling on NBA Finals in 1986.

The exhilarating final moments of the 1966 NBA Finals with Jerry West and his Lakers and Bill Russell and Sam Jones' Celtics putting on a show.
1985 NBA Finals Game 3: Prince brings the Purple and Showtime the Gold as Kareem breaks Jerry West's playoff scoring record and Worthy and Magic storm to a 2-1 series lead. And Rambis gets attacked again. The Celtics entered the series with homecourt advantage after a 63-19 season. The Lakers went 62-20. It was the first time the 2-3-2 format was used and the last time the NBA called the series "The NBA World Championship". The 1986 season would be the first to use "The Finals" branding. The Celtics blew out the Lakers 148-114 in Game 1. "The Memorial Day Massacre" was the most lopsided game in Finals history until the Celtics ran away with the title 131-92 in Game 6 of the 2008 Finals against the Lakers. 38 year old Kareem apologized to his teammates after an abysmal Game 1. His age was c...
Larry Bird in the 1981 NBA Finals: most underrated rebounder and passer ever The Celtics finished the season 62-20, and the Rockets a questionable 40-42, taking the last playoff spot in the west, the 6th seed. Moses Malone had the team on his back, playing alongside the league's shortest player at 5'9", Calvin Murphy, and future Clutch City coach Rudy T. The Celtics had actually blown out the Rockets in the playoffs the previous season; the Rockets and Spurs were moved to the Western Conference for the 1980-1981 season, the Bulls and Bucks moving to the East. In their '80 matchup, the Rockets had Rick Barry in his final season, whereas the Celtics had Dave Cowens, JoJo White, and Pete Maravich in their final seasons. The Lakers would win the championship. In 1981, Houston surprised LA in t...
2001 NBA Finals Game 4: SHAQ Just some early 2000's nostalgia for my followers; a special time before 9/11, the Pax Americana. Shaquille O'Neal was his dominant self, putting the Lakers ahead 3-1 against Iverson and the Sixers. This Lakers team was something else. I don't think we'll ever see anything like it again. I remember watching the series here in Philly knowing it was all just a formality. The Shaq Lakers will never be duplicated again; maybe that's a good thing? _______________ Big Aristotle: 34pts (13-25) 14reb 5ast Kobe: 19pts 10reb 9ast 1stl 1blk Iverson: 35pts (12-30) 4reb 4ast 1stl "I'm Real (Murder Remix)" by Jennifer Lopez and Ja Rule was released in July 2001.
