Seven more people were wounded in the shooting. Three police officers shot and killed have been identified. A gunman, identified by the Associated Press as Micah Xavier Johnson, 25, of Mesquite, Texas, was an Afghanistan war veteran with no criminal record. Dallas police said during negotiations, the shooter said he wanted to “kill white people, especially white officers.” The exact number of people involved in the shooting in Dallas is unclear. Thursday evening, police said snipers in “elevated positions” fired on police. However, police later said Johnson claimed he acted “alone” during negotiations. Three more people are in custody in connection with the shooting. Democratic members of Congress have renewed calls for gun control legislation, and accused Republicans of refusing to bring such bills to a vote. Demonstrators and police alike indicated the protest was a peaceful march against officer-involved shootings until gunfire erupted.
