What to Expect in Quaker Meeting for Worship

If you are going to go into Quaker Meeting for the first time, first of all, congratulations. So you walk in, sit down, be quiet. What to expect when you’re there, besides just “go with the flow” is different things depending on where you are.
What Should I Wear?

Unlike some other churches, you don’t need to dress up with suit and tie or a fancy dress. Most of the folks come in jeans, t-shirts, or shorts/t-shirts. Whatever you’re comfortable in.
Should I Bring My Kids?

So you’re thinking about coming to Meeting and you have children. You really need to know that you have to bring them. They may or may not enjoy themselves but we’re always so thrilled to have young people join us. They come and they’re bringing their alive-ness and their love and their genuine-ness. So please, yes, bring them.

So if you come into this space and you’re looking for images or words on the walls, some kind of direction, and you’re going to notice that there isn’t going to be any there. From the very beginning of Quakerism, its about the inside. So it’s about you not looking around you for that, but really going inward for your own wisdom, for your own piece of the divine that’s been given to you.

Sometimes a worship room will look like a really old building with benches that have been sat on by thousands of Quakers over hundreds of years and sometimes it will look like the basement of another local church.

Something that’s common to them is that people often will enter already in silence, find a place in the room and sit down in silence. Anyone coming into the room can sit anywhere, there’s not a right place or a wrong place to sit.

So before you go into Meeting for Worship for the first time, I’ll tell you what I’ve always told my kids when they were little, every week before we went in, which is just, “remember when you go in, to just sit down and listen for God. God is here with us and this is a space to listen.”

The first time I went to Quaker Meeting I didn’t know how to listen. Because I had never listened in church before. I had to work on that process of figuring out: what am I listening for? Am I listening to myself? What’s going on? What is everyone else listening to and how does that affect the community and me?

So in that quiet-ness you walk in, you say, “Ok, everyone is sitting there quietly, when are the directions going to come? What am I going to do?” Just follow suit.

Just sit down in that space. Just feel the space and the people around you and open yourself as much as you can. Just continue to notice how you can be aware of all that’s around you and all that’s within you, and how that’s all connected to everybody else in the room.

I came to Quakers, I came to Friends growing up in a lot of Evangelical Christian denominations and when I showed up at George Fox then College, now University, I began to be exposed to Quakers, and there was a lot of life there that I hadn’t experienced before in other Christian traditions. We all come from our own perspective, so I came from an Evangelical Christian perspective and was introduced to Quakerism and loved it, so my top ten list reflects the things that I loved coming from that environment.
The Top Ten Reasons I Am a Quaker
I’m Gregg Koskela, I’m a Quaker here in Newburg Oregon, and these are my top ten reasons for why I am a Quaker:
Number 10: I’m put off by hierarchy and I’m energized by community. I think what that means is that I really want to be a part of a group of Christ-followers who are taking responsibility themselves to listen to God and to obey God. I want to be part of a community that challenges each other, that engages with each other. I want to be a part of a group because that’s how we do life better. I think that’s the Quaker vision of community.
Number 9: I believe nobody has it all and I believe nobody is a lost cause. What Quakerism has really brought out of me is this recognition there’s nobody who has their stuff all together. It reminds me of my own struggles, my own weaknesses, my own sinfulness. But it always holds on as well that none of that overwhelms us, none of us is a lost cause. God can work in any of us, even pastors.
Number 8: I believe God can and does show up in every human experience, and worshiping with Quakers reminds me that in this moment I can look and expect for God to show up. And not only in this moment, but in the moment I’m gonna have washing my dishes or driving in my car or going about my regular life. I can pay attention to God present. And that’s one of the big reasons I’m drawn to Quakers.
Number 7: Most influential people in my life are Quakers. When I think about the people who’ve affected me, who have changed me for the better, a huge percentage of them are people who are in the Quaker tradition, and that’s one of the reasons it draws me in.
Number 6: Silence speaks to me. I used to be one of those people who thought prayer was about getting your words right before God, and Quakers have helped me understand to listen for that Still Small Voice of God. And I don’t think silence is the only way to hear God, but I cannot imagine or fathom hearing from God without taking regular time to be in silence.
Number 5: I believe every person on the planet can hear God’s voice and can be a part of God’s plan. And this means that I look to work for justice and equality in every human relationship because there are no fundamental differences between us as people, and it means that I am challenged to not have nationalistic blinders on when I look at the world. It means that there is something inside of me that screams against capital punishment or war because all people have value; all people can play a part.
Number 4: I don’t want to be called ‘reverend,’ and as a pastor, I don’t want to be separated from the people with whom I live life, who I live community with. I think that only God should be revered, and I love that that testimony is part of Quakers.
Number 3: I want to be challenged to a life of simplicity and integrity. I want to be challenged to a single-minded focus on obedience to God. And I want to be removed, released, from the endless distractions of stuff. I want my focus to be on Christ.

A Quaker is someone who is seeking to be faithful to the deepest truth that we can encounter, to be guided to that truth by the guidance of the holy spirit, by the presence of God in our lives, and by the understanding that that’s a real experience that we can encounter.
O:
A Quaker is someone who is willing to be still, enter a silence, and actually be penetrated by that silence.
Paul Buckley:
Penn said, a Quaker is defined by one fundamental principle, and that was that God had placed within each person an infallible guide, that if followed would lead you to righteousness and salvation. Anyone who follows that guide, who attends to it and does what it leads you to, is a true child of God and, by definition, then, is a Quaker.
C. Wess Daniels:
For me, one of the things that means to be Quaker is to be together in a community of people who gather and listen together. We can have spiritual practice outside of meeting, outside of worshipping, but there’s something about coming together and listening together to God as a community that is full of life, and full of conflict and challenge, and to me, that’s what makes Quakerism beautiful.
Faith Kelley:
I think there’s also some Quaker distinctives that come out of that experience of Christ alive and in the world with us, and those are things about, you know, sacraments being inward, and our experience of worship— the understanding that God is there in the worship and is with us. And so those things, I think, make someone a Quaker.
Monica Walters-Field:
So by definition, your communication changes, because you know, if we’re all, then, therefore that of God, we’re therefore all equal, and so by definition our relationships with each other must change, and will be different.

There is a way of trusting the innocence of that power, so that one is not afraid of it—not afraid of the power—but is willing to walk intimately into that power… and be informed by it. Informed. Reformed. Transformed. And in the transformation, of being touched by God, behaviors change. Something different happens.
Noah Merrill:
But it’s more than that, right, because there are many people in many traditions who are seeking to do that. So then what’s a Quaker? I think a Quaker is someone who is part of this living stream, this sense of being a people who’ve been on this journey for more than 350 years, traveling together as a community, supporting one another with these traditions and these practices that we have found. We didn’t create them; we discovered them. That help people along that journey of faithfulness, as we help each other to be set free and to grow more fully alive. And to me, that’s the Way we’re inviting people into.

Quakers
Quakers (or Friends) are members of a group of religious Christian movements which is known as the Religious Society of Friends in Europe, Australia, New Zealand and parts of North America; and known as the Friends Church in Africa, Asia, South America and parts of the US. The movements were originally, and are still predominantly based on Christianity. Members of the movements profess the priesthood of all believers, a doctrine derived from the First Epistle of Peter. They include those with evangelical, holiness, liberal, and traditional Quaker understandings of Christianity. To differing extents, the different movements that make up the Religious Society of Friends/Friends Church avoid creeds and hierarchical structures. In 2007, there were approximately 359,000 adult Quakers.
Around 79% of Quakers worldwide belong to the 'evangelical' and 'programmed' branches of Quakerism – these Quakers worship in services with singing and a prepared message from the Bible, coordinated by a pastor. Around 11% of Friends practice waiting worship, or unprogrammed worship (more commonly known today as Meeting for Worship), where the order of service is not planned in advance, is predominantly silent, and may include unprepared vocal ministry from those present. Some meetings of both types have Recorded Ministers in their meetings—Friends recognised for their gift of vocal ministry.

O: A Quaker is someone who is willing to be still, enter a silence, and actually be penetrated by that silence. Paul Buckley: Penn said, a Quaker is defined by one fundamental principle, and that was that God had placed within each person an infallible guide, that if followed would lead you to righteousness and salvation. Anyone who follows that guide, who attends to it and does what it leads you to, is a true child of God and, by definition, then, is a Quaker. C. Wess Daniels: For me, one of the things that means to be Quaker is to be together in a community of people who gather and listen together. We can have spiritual practice outside of meeting, outside of worshipping, but there’s something about coming together and listening together to God as a community that is full of life, and full of conflict and challenge, and to me, that’s what makes Quakerism beautiful. Faith Kelley: I think there’s also some Quaker distinctives that come out of that experience of Christ alive and in the world with us, and those are things about, you know, sacraments being inward, and our experience of worship— the understanding that God is there in the worship and is with us. And so those things, I think, make someone a Quaker. Monica Walters-Field: So by definition, your communication changes, because you know, if we’re all, then, therefore that of God, we’re therefore all equal, and so by definition our relationships with each other must change, and will be different. O: There is a way of trusting the innocence of that power, so that one is not afraid of it—not afraid of the power—but is willing to walk intimately into that power… and be informed by it. Informed. Reformed. Transformed. And in the transformation, of being touched by God, behaviors change. Something different happens. Noah Merrill: But it’s more than that, right, because there are many people in many traditions who are seeking to do that. So then what’s a Quaker? I think a Quaker is someone who is part of this living stream, this sense of being a people who’ve been on this journey for more than 350 years, traveling together as a community, supporting one another with these traditions and these practices that we have found. We didn’t create them; we discovered them. That help people along that journey of faithfulness, as we help each other to be set free and to grow more fully alive. And to me, that’s the Way we’re inviting people into. -

If you are going to go into Quaker Meeting for the first time, first of all, congratulations. So you walk in, sit down, be quiet. What to expect when you’re there, besides just “go with the flow” is different things depending on where you are.
What Should I Wear?

Unlike some other churches, you don’t need to dress up with suit and tie or a fancy dress. Most of the folks come in jeans, t-shirts, or shorts/t-shirts. Whatever you’re comfortable in.
Should I Bring My Kids?

So you’re thinking about coming to Meeting and you have children. You really need to know that you have to bring them. They may or may not enjoy themselves but we’re always so thrilled to have young people join us. They come and they’re bringing their alive-ness and their love and their genuine-ness. So if you come into this space and you’re looking for images or words on the walls, some kind of direction, and you’re going to notice that there isn’t going to be any there. From the very beginning of Quakerism, its about the inside. So it’s about you not looking around you for that, but really going inward for your own wisdom, for your own piece of the divine that’s been given to you.

The first time I went to Quaker Meeting I didn’t know how to listen. Because I had never listened in church before. I had to work on that process of figuring out: what am I listening for? I came to Quakers, I came to Friends growing up in a lot of Evangelical Christian denominations and when I showed up at George Fox then College, now University, I began to be exposed to Quakers, and there was a lot of life there that I hadn’t experienced before in other Christian traditions. We all come from our own perspective, so I came from an Evangelical Christian perspective and was introduced to Quakerism and loved it, so my top ten list reflects the things that I loved coming from that environment.
The Top Ten Reasons I Am a Quaker
I’m Gregg Koskela, I’m a Quaker here in Newburg Oregon, and these are my top ten reasons for why I am a Quaker:
Number 10: I’m put off by hierarchy and I’m energized by community. I think what that means is that I really want to be a part of a group of Christ-followers who are taking responsibility themselves to listen to God and to obey God. I want to be part of a community that challenges each other, that engages with each other. I want to be a part of a group because that’s how we do life better. I think that’s the Quaker vision of community.
Number 9: I believe nobody has it all and I believe nobody is a lost cause. What Quakerism has really brought out of me is this recognition there’s nobody who has their stuff all together. It reminds me of my own struggles, my own weaknesses, my own sinfulness. But it always holds on as well that none of that overwhelms us, none of us is a lost cause. God can work in any of us, even pastors.
Number 8: I believe God can and does show up in every human experience, and worshiping with Quakers reminds me that in this moment I can look and expect for God to show up. And not only in this moment, but in the moment I’m gonna have washing my dishes or driving in my car or going about my regular life. I can pay attention to God present. And that’s one of the big reasons I’m drawn to Quakers.
Number 7: Most influential people in my life are Quakers. When I think about the people who’ve affected me, who have changed me for the better, a huge percentage of them are people who are in the Quaker tradition, and that’s one of the reasons it draws me in.
Number 6: Silence speaks to me. I used to be one of those people who thought prayer was about getting your words right before God, and Quakers have helped me understand to listen for that Still Small Voice of God. And I don’t think silence is the only way to hear God, but I cannot imagine or fathom hearing from God without taking regular time to be in silence.
Number 5: I believe every person on the planet can hear God’s voice and can be a part of God’s plan. And this means that I look to work for justice and equality in every human relationship because there are no fundamental differences between us as people, and it means that I am challenged to not have nationalistic blinders on when I look at the world. It means that there is something inside of me that screams against capital punishment or war because all people have value; all people can play a part.
Number 4: I don’t want to be called ‘reverend,’ and as a pastor, I don’t want to be separated from the people with whom I live life, who I live community with. I think that only God should be revered, and I love that that testimony is part of Quakers.
Number 3: I want to be challenged to a life of simplicity and integrity. I want to be challenged to a single-minded focus on obedience to God. And I want to be removed, released, from the endless distractions of stuff. I want my focus to be on Christ.

A Quaker is someone who is seeking to be faithful to the deepest truth that we can encounter, to be guided to that truth by the guidance of the holy spirit, by the presence of God in our lives, and by the understanding that that’s a real experience that we can encounter.
O:
A Quaker is someone who is willing to be still, enter a silence, and actually be penetrated by that silence.
Paul Buckley:
Penn said, a Quaker is defined by one fundamental principle, and that was that God had placed within each person an infallible guide, that if followed would lead you to righteousness and salvation. Anyone who follows that guide, who attends to it and does what it leads you to, is a true child of God and, by definition, then, is a Quaker.
C. Wess Daniels:
For me, one of the things that means to be Quaker is to be together in a community of people who gather and listen together. We can have spiritual practice outside of meeting, outside of worshipping, but there’s something about coming together and listening together to God as a community that is full of life, and full of conflict and challenge, and to me, that’s what makes Quakerism beautiful.

I think there’s also some Quaker distinctives that come out of that experience of Christ alive and in the world with us, and those are things about, you know, sacraments being inward, and our experience of worship— the understanding that God is there in the worship and is with us. And so those things, I think, make someone a Quaker.

So by definition, your communication changes, because you know, if we’re all, then, therefore that of God, we’re therefore all equal, and so by definition our relationships with each other must change, and will be different.

I think a Quaker is someone who is part of this living stream, this sense of being a people who’ve been on this journey for more than 350 years, traveling together as a community, supporting one another with these traditions and these practices that we have found. We didn’t create them; we discovered them. That help people along that journey of faithfulness, as we help each other to be set free and to grow more fully alive. And to me, that’s the Way we’re inviting people into.

A Quaker is someone who is seeking to be faithful to the deepest truth that we can encounter, to be guided to that truth by the guidance of the holy spirit, by the presence of God in our lives, and by the understanding that that’s a real experience that we can encounter.
O:
A Quaker is someone who is willing to be still, enter a silence, and actually be penetrated by that silence.
Paul Buckley:
Penn said, a Quaker is defined by one fundamental principle, and that was that God had placed within each person an infallible guide, that if followed would lead you to righteousness and salvation. Anyone who follows that guide, who attends to it and does what it leads you to, is a true child of God and, by definition, then, is a Quaker.
C. Wess Daniels:
For me, one of the things that means to be Quaker is to be together in a community of people who gather and listen together. We can have spiritual practice outside of meeting, outside of worshipping, but there’s something about coming together and listening together to God as a community that is full of life, and full of conflict and challenge, and to me, that’s what makes Quakerism beautiful.
Faith Kelley:
