Dunnington is a village and civil parish in the City of York and ceremonial county of North Yorkshire, England. The population of the civil parish was 3,230 at the 2011 Census. The village is approximately 4 miles east from York city centre.
Dunnington village was an Anglo-Saxon settlement, and was listed in the 1086 Domesday Book as 'Donniton', which, according to Mills, translates as an 'estate associated with a man called Duna'. The fields around the village became the country's major area for growing chicory.
Between 1913 and 1926 Dunnington was served by passenger trains on the Derwent Valley Light Railway, and the remaining goods-only railway was withdrawn in stages following the Beeching Axe. Steam trains ran to Dunnington on this line between 1977 and 1979, but following the closure of a crop drying facility the last tracks covering the route to York via Murton and Osbaldwick were lifted.
In 2006 Dunnington published a Village Design Statement as part of a national scheme introduced by the Countryside Commission in 1996. This describes the history, visual characteristics and local setting of the village and surrounding landscape. The VDS forms part of the Parish Plan.
Dunnington was the category winner in the small town category of the 2014 Britain in Bloom competition.
The original Victorian village school was demolished, but a doctors' surgery building that sits on the site was built using a complementary construction style and reclaimed materials.
The village has an historic centre, part of which is a conservation area.
According to the 2001 Census, the parish had a population of 3,194. Before 1996 it had been part of the Selby district, and before 1974 the East Riding of Yorkshire.
Dunnington is connected to York by the A1079 York to Hull, and the A166 York to Bridlington roads. The village is on the FirstGroup bus company's number 10 route through York.
A monthly magazine for the village and neighbouring communities, The Grapevine, is published by the local church, and contains news from village organisations and feature articles.
Recreational areas within or around Dunnington are Hagg Wood, Hassacarr Nature Reserve, and a park. Hassacarr Nature Reserve has attracted some 5,000 visitors over the past 20 years, and has recently been awarded Local Nature Reserve status.
Dunnington has two public houses the Cross Keys and The Windmill, though Dunnington Sports Club is also open as a bar, a library, a doctors' surgery, and a reading room at the Village Hall. The village school is Dunnington C of E Primary School.
Churches include those for Methodists, Protestants and Anglicans. The Grade: II* listed Church of England parish church is dedicated to St Nicholas, and dates in part from the late 11th century with later additions and alterations to the 19th, when it was rebuilt by C. Hodgson Fowler.
Village sport facilities include those for bowls, cricket, football, tennis, squash, and ladies hockey. There is also a gymnasium.

Dunnington is a village and civil parish in the City of York and ceremonial county of North Yorkshire, England. The village is approximately 4 miles (6 km) east from York city centre.
History
Dunnington village was an Anglo-Saxon settlement, and was listed in the 1086 Domesday Book as "Donniton", which, according to Mills, translates as an "estate associated with a man called Dun(n)a". The fields around the village became the country's major area for growing chicory.
Between 1913 and 1926 Dunnington was served by passenger trains on the Derwent Valley Light Railway, and the remaining goods-only railway was withdrawn in stages following the Beeching Axe. Steam trains ran to Dunnington on this line between 1977 and 1979, but following the closure of a crop drying facility the last tracks covering the route to York via Murton and Osbaldwick were lifted.

Dunnington is a village and civil parish in the City of York and ceremonial county of North Yorkshire, England. The population of the civil parish was 3,230 at the 2011 Census. The village is approximately 4 miles east from York city centre.
Dunnington village was an Anglo-Saxon settlement, and was listed in the 1086 Domesday Book as 'Donniton', which, according to Mills, translates as an 'estate associated with a man called Duna'. The fields around the village became the country's major area for growing chicory.
Between 1913 and 1926 Dunnington was served by passenger trains on the Derwent Valley Light Railway, and the remaining goods-only railway was withdrawn in stages following the Beeching Axe. Steam trains ran to Dunnington on this line between 1977 and 1979, but following the closure of a crop drying facility the last tracks covering the route to York via Murton and Osbaldwick were lifted.

Today she added #Iceland to her considerably impressive list, making it her 84th country she's flown in. She took off from the Egilsstadir airport and thankfully, despite the wind, landed in a grassy area - as opposed to the fjord or swamp. Cycling "Super-Highway" in York
Cycling is safe, convenient, fast and social. Somehow, I think that the council in York have got things a little wrong... 10 out of 10 for effort, 1 out of 10 for the result. May I suggest that those designing the cycle lanes in York, have not experienced a "cycling culture", are not 'urban utility cyclists' and do not understand what cyclists need? York, like many UK cities is seeing a growth in cycling. However, with infrastructures like this, cycling in the UK will peak and fall... never reaching cycling levels seen in wetter, colder and hillier cities like Basel, Freiburg and Copenhagen.

Leonard Ct / Maryland Ave Working House Fire W/Fire Fighter Injury & Flyout... Calvert Co. Maryland
Wednesday October 5, 2011 at 0931 hours, Engine 62 and Tanker 6 were alerted to 235 Leonard Court for the house fire (directly behind St Leonard VFD). Units from the St Leonard VFD arrived on location with heavy fire showing from a split-foyer residence advising the correct address would be on Maryland Avenue. A Working Fire Dispatch was sounded bringing a 3rd crew from quarters aboard Squad 6. Engine 62 arrived on location, laid 1,000 feet of 3" from a hydrant and advanced an attack line to the rear of the residence to assist with extinguishing the fire. During the process, Firefighter Michael Montgomery Jr of the Huntingtown VFD partially fell through the floor causing 2nd and 3rd degree burns to his right leg. He was air-lifted to Med Star and is currently admitted to the Burn Unit. T...

Meet the hot air balloon 🎈 queen and world record holder (for a woman who has flown solo balloon flights in the most countries in the world): Allie Dunnington. Today she added #Iceland to her considerably impressive list, making it her 84th country she's flown in. She took off from the Egilsstadir airport and thankfully, despite the wind, landed in a grassy area - as opposed to the fjord or swamp.
She is the only woman to fly a balloon in #Iceland which is a particularly tough country to hot air balloon in due to weather (only three other people have accomplished it). This @vintageairrally and the people on it is cool as shit.

May I suggest that those designing the cycle lanes in York, have not experienced a "cycling culture", are not 'urban utility cyclists' and do not understand what cyclists need?
York, like many UK cities is seeing a growth in cycling. However, with infrastructures like this, cycling in the UK will peak and fall... never reaching cycling levels seen in wetter, colder and hillier cities like Basel, Freiburg and Copenhagen.

Wednesday October 5, 2011 at 0931 hours, Engine 62 and Tanker 6 were alerted to 235 Leonard Court for the house fire (directly behind St Leonard VFD). Units fro...
Wednesday October 5, 2011 at 0931 hours, Engine 62 and Tanker 6 were alerted to 235 Leonard Court for the house fire (directly behind St Leonard VFD). Units from the St Leonard VFD arrived on location with heavy fire showing from a split-foyer residence advising the correct address would be on Maryland Avenue. A Working Fire Dispatch was sounded bringing a 3rd crew from quarters aboard Squad 6.
Engine 62 arrived on location, laid 1,000 feet of 3" from a hydrant and advanced an attack line to the rear of the residence to assist with extinguishing the fire. During the process, Firefighter Michael Montgomery Jr of the Huntingtown VFD partially fell through the floor causing 2nd and 3rd degree burns to his right leg. He was air-lifted to Med Star and is currently admitted to the Burn Unit. The Chief of the Department, Assistant Chief of the Department and a handful of other members are bedside with Michael Montgomery Jr along with the DCFD Burn Foundation.
It is anticipated that in the next few days, Montgomery will undergo surgery and possible skin grafts. The leadership and membership of the Huntingtown VFD ask that you keep the Montgomery family in your thoughts and prayers.
