Mime artist
A mime or mime artist (from Greek μῖμος, mimos, "imitator, actor") is someone who uses mime as a theatrical medium or as a performance art, involving miming, or the acting out a story through body motions, without use of speech. In earlier times, in English, such a performer would typically be referred to as a mummer. Miming is to be distinguished from silent comedy, in which the artist is a seamless character in a film or sketch.
The performance of mime originates at its earliest in Ancient Greece; the name is taken from a single masked dancer called Pantomimus, although performances were not necessarily silent. In Medieval Europe, early forms of mime such as mummer plays and later dumbshows evolved. In early nineteenth century Paris, Jean-Gaspard Deburau solidified the many attributes that we have come to know in modern times—the silent figure in whiteface.
Jacques Copeau, strongly influenced by Commedia dell'arte and Japanese Noh theatre, used masks in the training of his actors. Étienne Decroux, a pupil of his, was highly influenced by this and started exploring and developing the possibilities of mime and developed corporeal mime into a highly sculptural form, taking it outside of the realms of naturalism. Jacques Lecoq contributed significantly to the development of mime and physical theatre with his training methods.

Ballet mime: Odette and Siegfried's reconciliation (Act IV)
PLEASE READ THE DESCRIPTION FIRST! I decided to include the vastly underrated Tchaikovsky/Drigo 'Valse bluette' (or "Waltz of the White and Black Swans") because, as the ballet's final divertissement, I consider it the perfect hors d'oeuvre for an otherwise action-packed Act IV. The bits of mime in the following scenes and the so-called reconciliation pas d'action (to Tchaikovsky's 'Un poco di Chopin', with orchestration by Drigo) are easy to decipher, short and very light, and yet I find them essential in effectively paving the way for the dramatic finale. I usually find the mime-free "white acts" in other productions somewhat unsatisfying in comparison, so yeah, I'm definitely pro-Polyhymnia! I decided to include the vastly underrated Tchaikovsky/Drigo 'Valse bluette' (or "Waltz of the White and Black Swans") because, as the ballet's final divertissement, I consider it the perfect hors d'oeuvre for an otherwise action-packed Act IV. Act IV (or III, depending on the production), Scene 1:
"The swan maidens anxiously await Odette's return. To shorten their time of anguish, they try to divert themselves by dancing."
Scene 2:
"Odette runs in. The swans greet her joyfully, but despair when they learn of Siegfried's betrayal. All is finished; the evil genie [Rothbart] has triumphed and there's no rescue for Odette: the evil spell will last forever. It would be better, while she is still a woman, to perish in the waves of the lake than to live without Siegfried. In vain her friends try to console her."
Scene 3:
"Siegfried runs in. He is searching for Odette so that he can beg for forgiveness at her feet for his unintended betrayal. He loves her alone and swore fidelity to Odile because he thought she was Odette. At the sight of her beloved, Odette forgets her grief and both give themselves over to the joy of meeting."
CAST: Zenaida Yanowsky as Odette, Nehemiah Kish as Siegfried, Hikaru Kobayashi and Itziar Mendizabal as the waltz soloists, and the corps de ballet of the Royal Ballet.

PLEASE READ THE DESCRIPTION FIRST! I decided to include the vastly underrated Tchaikovsky/Drigo 'Valse bluette' (or "Waltz of the White and Black Swans") because, as the ballet's final divertissement, I consider it the perfect hors d'oeuvre for an otherwise action-packed Act IV. The bits of mime in the following scenes and the so-called reconciliation pas d'action (to Tchaikovsky's 'Un poco di Chopin', with orchestration by Drigo) are easy to decipher, short and very light, and yet I find them essential in effectively paving the way for the dramatic finale. I usually find the mime-free "white acts" in other productions somewhat unsatisfying in comparison, so yeah, I'm definitely pro-Polyhymnia!

Why were they here, on a Sunday, above a pub in South East London, miming being a generator? Because “Borderline” is a play about the refugees’ journey, and life in the camps themselves ... And by miming a machine, you’re reminded that the cold and methodical mechanical contraption is itself a human artefact, made of human desires and brought together by much human coordination, by something shared rather than by a spooky invisible hand....
