Ms.Rukmini Vijayakumar, is a prominent south Indian Bharatanatyam Dancer was the first speaker. She is currently pursuing a Fitness Training Certification at UCLA, and a professional dancer's MFA program in Bharatanatyam at the Shastra University, Chennai under Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam. In her talk she compared the Indian dance and the western by saying that the Indian dance is traditional and the western is novelistic; and she also differentiated the old dance, how it was and the present dance style, how it got changed and improvised over the years. To conclude she left the audience spell bound with her marvelous performance!

Unified in theme but diverse in form... that was the crux 'Natyalayavibhati', a classical dance presentation conceived by the Kuchipudi dancing couple Raja and Radha Reddy.
The piece was the grand finale at the 2005 National Festival of Music and Dance titled Laayalayam in New Delhi, as part of the Reddys' school, Natya Tarangini's Parampara series. Now, that performance has been released as a DVD by Sea Records.
Thematic pieces
The thematic performance features six dancers showcasing the various styles of Indian classical dance — Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, Mohiniyattom, Kathak, Odissi and Manipuri — to verses from the Natya Sastra and Abhinaya Darpana. Music was by Durga Prasad.
The choreography is done in such a way that each artist gets a chance to perform solo before joining together for a riveting nritta finale to the same beat, all the time maintaining her individualistic style.
The first to take the stage is Jayaprabha Menon, whose interpretation of chatursam exposes the delicate and graceful movements of the dance from Kerala.
One can feast on the sculpturesque poses of Kavita Dwivedi in her Odissi piece in tisram. Manipuri, a dance form that is not as visible as the rest of the styles, finds a graceful representative in Beena Devi.
Kausalya Reddy, who chooses misram to depict Kuchipudi, the temple dance from Andhra Pradesh, is a picture of poise and dignity. She is followed by Anuradha Venkatraman, whose crisp Bharatanatyam solo is in contrast to Sharmishta Mukherjee's Kathak smooth presentation.
The DVD captures the facial expressions and nuances of each dancer, though the camera is slow in catching the footwork of Kausalya at times.

Indian classical dance
Indian classical dance is an umbrella term for various codified art forms rooted in sacred Hindu musical theatre styles whose theory can be traced back to the Natya Shastra of Bharata Muni (400 BCE).
Definitions
Indian classical dances are performed inside the sanctum of the temple according to the rituals called Agama Nartanam. Natya Shastra classifies this type of dance form as margi, or a soul-liberating dance. Dances performed in royal courts to the accompaniment of classical music are called Carnatakam. A Hindu deity is considered a revered royal guest in his temple, and should be offered all of the "sixteen hospitalities", among which are music and dance. The "sixteen hospitalities" please the senses.
The term "classical" (Sanskrit: "Shastriya") was introduced by Sangeet Natak Akademi to denote the Natya Shastra-based performing art styles. Classical dance performances usually feature a story about good and evil. The dance is traditionally presented in a dramatic manner called nritta, which uses "clean" facial expressions and mudrā, or hand gestures, to narrate the story and to demonstrate concepts such as particular objects, weather, aspects of nature and emotions. Classical Indian dance is also known as Natya. Natya includes singing and abhinaya (mime acting). These features are common to all Indian classical styles of dance. In the margi form, Nritta is composed of karanas, while Desi nritta consists mainly of adavus.

She is currently pursuing a Fitness Training Certification at UCLA, and a professional dancer's MFA program in Bharatanatyam at the Shastra University, Chennai under Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam. In her talk she compared the Indian dance and the western by saying that the Indian dance is traditional and the western is novelistic; and she also differentiated the old dance, how it was and the present dance style, how it got changed and improvised over the years. To conclude she left the audience spell bound with her marvelous performance!

Unified in theme but diverse in form... that was the crux 'Natyalayavibhati', a classical dance presentation conceived by the Kuchipudi dancing couple Raja and Radha Reddy.
The piece was the grand finale at the 2005 National Festival of Music and Dance titled Laayalayam in New Delhi, as part of the Reddys' school, Natya Tarangini's Parampara series. Now, that performance has been released as a DVD by Sea Records.
Thematic pieces
The thematic performance features six dancers showcasing the various styles of Indian classical dance — Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, Mohiniyattom, Kathak, Odissi and Manipuri — to verses from the Natya Sastra and Abhinaya Darpana. Music was by Durga Prasad.
The choreography is done in such a way that each artist gets a chance to perform solo before joining together for a riveting nritta finale to the same beat, all the time maintaining her individualistic style.
The first to take the stage is Jayaprabha Menon, whose interpretation of chatursam exposes the delicate and graceful movements of the dance from Kerala.
One can feast on the sculpturesque poses of Kavita Dwivedi in her Odissi piece in tisram. Manipuri, a dance form that is not as visible as the rest of the styles, finds a graceful representative in Beena Devi.
Kausalya Reddy, who chooses misram to depict Kuchipudi, the temple dance from Andhra Pradesh, is a picture of poise and dignity. She is followed by Anuradha Venkatraman, whose crisp Bharatanatyam solo is in contrast to Sharmishta Mukherjee's Kathak smooth presentation.
The DVD captures the facial expressions and nuances of each dancer, though the camera is slow in catching the footwork of Kausalya at times.

Originally performed only inside of temples, Odissi expresses the emotions of heart and the stories of the Hindu Gods and Goddesses through mudras, facial expressions, and a wide variety of body movements.
In this course, you will have a taste of Odissi and an overview of this classical form.
Nubia offers “her take” on Odissi for the yogi/yogini/bhakta, with the intention to have you experiencing devotion in motion.
Nubia has been dedicated to the sacred dance of Odissi since 1997. She started her training with Sonia Galvao in Sao Paulo, studied in India for 3 months at Madhavi Mudhgal school in Delhi and since 2001 she has been a devoted student of Sri Vishnu Tattwa Das in Northern California.

You will be introduced to the depth and subtleties of this dance.
Focusing on the single parts of the body and the simple movements of an introductory class you will build the foundation to compose the full phrases of this dance. In this class you will learn Bhumi Pronam, a salutation to the Earth Mother; and Pushpanjali, a Flower offering ritual to a chosen deity or Ishta-Devata.

Odissi traces its origins to the ritual dances performed in the temples of ancient northern India. Today the name Odissi refers to the dance style of the state of Orissa in eastern India. Odissi is one of the oldest dance form of India with rich tradition. Archaeological evidences show the arts’ age and evolution. The traditional dance form of Orissa, it has its origin to the temple dances of the temple dancers. We can find mentions about Odissi in inscriptions, depictions on sculptures. In temples like Brahmeswara, Sun Temple at konark the sculptures an depictions are found.. In the 1950s, the entire dance form was revitalised, thanks to the Abhinaya Chandrika and sculpted dance poses found in temples.
The Oddisi seen today is a result of reconstruction from various dance traditions of Orissa. The Mahais, the Odissi as we know it today is the result of a long process of reconstruction from various dance traditions of Orissa, for instance the Maharis, the Goti puas and the Bhandanritya
traditions. Maharis are the counterparts of the Devadasis of the South. Gotipuas are men who dressed as female dancers and danced like the Maharis.
While the form is curvaceous, concentrating on the tribhang or the division of the body into three parts, head, bust and torso; the mudras and the expressions are similar to those of Bharatnatyam. Odissi performances are replete with lores of the eighth incarnation of Vishnu, Lord Krishna. It is a soft, lyrical classical dance which depicts the ambience of Orissa and the philosophy of its most popular deity, Lord Jagannath.
Odissi is based on the popular devotion to Lord Krishna and the verses of the Sanskrit play Geet Govinda are used to depict the love and devotion to God. The Odissi dancers use their head, bust and torso in soft flowing movements to express specific moods and emotions.

Odissi is one of the oldest dance form of India with rich tradition. Archaeological evidences show the arts’ age and evolution. The traditional dance form of Orissa, it has its origin to the temple dances of the temple dancers. We can find mentions about Odissi in inscriptions, depictions on sculptures. In temples like Brahmeswara, Sun Temple at konark the sculptures an depictions are found.. In the 1950s, the entire dance form was revitalised, thanks to the Abhinaya Chandrika and sculpted dance poses found in temples.
The Oddisi seen today is a result of reconstruction from various dance traditions of Orissa. The Mahais, the Odissi as we know it today is the result of a long process of reconstruction from various dance traditions of Orissa, for instance the Maharis, the Goti puas and the Bhandanritya
traditions. Maharis are the counterparts of the Devadasis of the South. Gotipuas are men who dressed as female dancers and danced like the Maharis.
While the form is curvaceous, concentrating on the tribhang or the division of the body into three parts, head, bust and torso; the mudras and the expressions are similar to those of Bharatnatyam. Odissi performances are replete with lores of the eighth incarnation of Vishnu, Lord Krishna. It is a soft, lyrical classical dance which depicts the ambience of Orissa and the philosophy of its most popular deity, Lord Jagannath.
Odissi is based on the popular devotion to Lord Krishna and the verses of the Sanskrit play Geet Govinda are used to depict the love and devotion to God. The Odissi dancers use their head, bust and torso in soft flowing movements to express specific moods and emotions.

TABLA TARANG: Is a take off from the Tabla and makes this rhythmic accompaniment a melodic instrument by using a number of treble drums. These drums are tuned to the various notes of the octave, which enables the player to coax ragas and melodies from them.
DILRUBA: Is a stringed instrument of the bowed variety with a fingerboard and frets, which resemble the sitar. The instrument resembles the sarangi; its belly too is covered with skin and it too is played with a bow. All the nuances of the sarangi are possible on the Dilruba, which makes both instruments ideal as accompaniment as also solo play.
SURBAHAR : Also known as, bass sitar is a pluked string instrument used in the Hindustani classical music of North India. It has a deep, sonorous and ringing tone. The popularity of the sitar as a classical instrument has all but eclipsed the surbahar.

Odissi traces its origins to the ritual dances performed in the temples of ancient northern India. Today the name Odissi refers to the dance style of the state of Orissa in eastern India. Like other classical arts of India, this ancient dance style had suffered a decline as temples and artists lost the patronage of feudal rulers and princely states, and by the 1930s and 40s, there were very few surviving practitioners of the art.
The current form of Odissi is the product of a 20th century revival. Dedicated scholars and dance enthusiasts carefully researched manuscripts and studied the sculpture, painting and poetry of the region. They also met and observed the performances of the few existing performers, in order torevive and restructure Odissi as a unique classical dance style adapted to the requirements of formal stage presentation. Over the years Odissi has become one of the most popular classical dance styles.
Like other Indian classical dance forms, Odissi has two major facets: Nritta or non-representational dance, in which ornamental patterns are created using body movements in space and time; and Nritya, or stylized mime in which symbolic hand gestures and facial expressions are used to interpret a story or theme.The technique of Odissi includes repeated use of the tribhangi, or thrice-deflected posture, in which the body is bent in three places, approximating an "s" shape. This posture and the characteristic shifting of the torso from side to side, make Odissi a difficult style to execute. When mastered, it is the epitome of fluid grace and has a distinctively lyrical quality that is very appealing.
