India, officially the Republic of India (Bhārat Gaṇarājya), is a country in South Asia. It is the seventh-largest country by area, the second-most populous country with over 1.2 billion people, and the most populous democracy in the world. Bounded by the Indian Ocean on the south, the Arabian Sea on the south-west, and the Bay of Bengal on the south-east, it shares land borders with Pakistan to the west;China, Nepal, and Bhutan to the north-east; and Myanmar (Burma) and Bangladesh to the east. In the Indian Ocean, India is in the vicinity of Sri Lanka and the Maldives; in addition, India's Andaman and Nicobar Islands share a maritime border with Thailand and Indonesia.
Home to the ancient Indus Valley Civilisation and a region of historic trade routes and vast empires, the Indian subcontinent was identified with its commercial and cultural wealth for much of its long history. Four religions—Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism—originated here, whereas Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam arrived in the 1st millennium CE and also shaped the region's diverse culture. Gradually annexed by and brought under the administration of the British East India Company from the early 18th century and administered directly by the United Kingdom after the Indian Rebellion of 1857, India became an independent nation in 1947 after a struggle for independence that was marked by non-violent resistance led by Mahatma Gandhi.
Rabindranath Tagore (i/rəˈbindrəˈnɑːt ˈtɑːɡɔːr/; Bengali pronunciation: [robind̪ro nat̪ʰ ʈʰakur]), also written Ravīndranātha Thākura (7 May 1861 – 7 August 1941), sobriquet Gurudev, was a Bengali polymath who reshaped Bengali literature and music, as well as Indian art with Contextual Modernism in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Author of Gitanjali and its "profoundly sensitive, fresh and beautiful verse", he became the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913. In translation his poetry was viewed as spiritual and mercurial; however, his "elegant prose and magical poetry" remain largely unknown outside Bengal. Sometimes referred to as "the Bard of Bengal", Tagore introduced new prose and verse forms and the use of colloquial language into Bengali literature, thereby freeing it from traditional models based on classical Sanskrit. He was highly influential in introducing the best of Indian culture to the West and vice versa, and he is generally regarded as the outstanding creative artist of the modern Indian subcontinent.
Rabindranath Tagore, the author and composer of the national anthem of India and Bangladesh.Jana Gana Mana was written on 11 December 1911 and sung on 27 December 1911 at the Indian National Congress, Calcutta and again in January 1912 at the annual event of the Adi Brahmo Samaj. Though the Bengali song had been written in 1911, it was largely unknown except to the readers of the Brahmo Samaj journal, Tattwabodhini Patrika, of which Tagore was the editor.

Independence Day of India is not merely a celebration of India’s attaining freedom from the British. There is much more to it than most of us know! Here is a short animation video about some unknown facts about India’s Independence Day. Raju: Yay! Its’ Independence Day! Bheem: Yes it’s 15th August, the day when India got its independence from the British Empire. Kalia: We Know! We know! Bheem: I’m sure that you also know that we hoist our National Flag on this day. Chutki: Yes! Yes! The Tricolour… we know. Bheem: Right! But, do you know that our National Flag was not as we see it today, from the beginning. In fact, it underwent major changes about 6 times. And, are you aware that the only material allowed to be used for making the National Flag is Khadi (or Hand-spun Cloth)? Also, d...

This video was captured at Siachen Glacier, Ladakh, showing how difficult situations are here. Siachen is the toughest and highest battle field in the world at 21,000 ft and temperature here may plunge anytime below minus 50 degrees Celsius. At least three soldiers wear the crown of death here every month due to avalanches and other extreme weather/geographical conditions. When you think India, if you think spicy food, snake charmers, dodging cows, the Taj Mahal, and total chaos- you’re thinking about Northern India. It's an adventure waiting to happen, and will leave you wondering why it only accounts for 1% of world tourism. Join Ricky Moreno as he explores Delhi, Rajasthan, Agra, Rishikesh, and Varanasi. Welcome to Delhi. Say goodbye to your personal space. It’s crowded, it’s overwhelming, and definitely exhausting. One day here can feel like an entire week. The only way you’ll have any fun is to just put down the Purell and join the party. Instead of going straight to Agra to see the Taj Mahal, first I head west to hang with some locals in Rajasthan. Here, the people are welcoming, the desert is sprawling, and the camels command the streets. And it...

In Part One of my India travel video guide, I begin my travels in India with Calcutta (Kolkata). India had long been on my bucket list of countries to travel to in the world, and in April, 2013, I finally made it there, starting with Calcutta, with no better reason than the fact was I knew so little about that part of the country. Calcutta was once the capital of the British Empire in India, and today it's home to over 14 million people, which means the city itself is a crowded, dense, loud, but endlessly fascinating place to explore. In this video I explore the alleyways and grand buildings that make up B.B.D. Bagh, the area where the city was founded. After checking out a parade (a very common occurrence I was to later learn) and grabbing a roadside cup of chai, I stop at the home of f...

Coming from Kolkata, it's hard to believe that Darjeeling is actually in the same state, it's such a vastly different place. In order to get to Darjeeling, India, it's easiest to take the train to the nearest station which is located at New Jalpaiguri (known just as NJP by the train code). There's little to do in NJP, but from right outside the train station you can then board to a shared jeep and for 200 Rupees, you can take the jeep straight to Darjeeling. Interesting and Unknown Facts About India's Independence Day On the occasion of India’s 67th Independence day, here are some interesting and unknown facts related to India and independence. National flag was hoisted first on August 7, 1906 at the Parsee Bagan Square in Calcutta. The flag was composed of horizontal strips of red, yellow and green. The red strip at the top had eight white lotuses embossed on it in a row. The green strip had a white sun on the left and a white crescent and star on the right. THE NATIONAL ANTHEM CHALLENGE (No.7) Country: India (officially the Republic of India) [The story behind this challenge... I started learning national anthems (other than the Philippines' where I come from) in 2009 when I was invited to sing both the Philippines' and Singapore's national anthem for an event in Singapore. Unfortunately, close to the event day, the organisers decided to use a recording instead of a live performance (guess they were unsure of me - haha! but thank goodness). Nevertheless, I continued learning the Singapore national anthem. Inspired by learning the new language, I got interested since then to learn more, especially those of the countries I have visited and the ones in my travel bucket list - as if they will easily let me in at the airport if I can sing their ...
