Chita Rivera (born January 23, 1933) is an American actress, dancer, and singer best known for her roles in musical theatre. She is the first Hispanic woman and the first Latino American to receive a Kennedy Center Honors award (December 2002). She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009.
Rivera was born Dolores Conchita Figueroa del Rivero in Washington, D.C., the daughter of Katherine (Anderson), a government clerk, and Pedro Julio Figueroa del Rivero, a clarinetist and saxophonist for the United States Navy Band. Her father was Puerto Rican, and her mother was of Scottish and Italian descent. Rivera was seven years old when her mother was widowed and went to work at The Pentagon.
In 1944, Rivera's mother enrolled her in the Jones-Haywood School of Ballet (now the Jones Haywood School of Dance). Later, when she was 15, a teacher from George Balanchine's School of American Ballet visited their studio; and Rivera was one of two students picked to audition in New York City; she was accompanied to the audition by Doris Jones, one of the people who ran the Jones-Haywood School. Rivera's audition was successful, and she was accepted into the school and given a scholarship

At the 2016 edition of Broadway Backwards, a razzle-dazzle performance by Rivera of Kander and Ebb’s “All I Care About is Love” from Chicago. Following prolonged cheers, whistles and applause when she appeared, Rivera delivered an unforgettable take on smarmy lawyer Billy Flynn, surrounded by a bevy of feathery beauties, many from the original 1996 Chicago revival cast: Nili Bassman, Mindy Cooper, Mamie Duncan-Gibbs, Gabriela Garcia, Mary Ann Lamb, Dana Moore and Solange Sandy. The sold-out audience at Broadway’s Al Hirschfeld Theatre was dazzled Monday, March 21, 2016, by this year’s stirring edition of Broadway Backwards (#broadwaywaybackwards). The annual celebration, where men sing songs originally written for women and vice versa offering this audience the chance to see LGBT stories ...
MESSAGE TO VIEWERS: [Click on "Show More" for rest of this message & description] I am sad to find out that several people have copied and re-posted most of my videos, using my exact same titles (this video is among over 400 videos that they have copied from me). The descriptions are either shown as I originally wrote them, partially shown, completely left out, or completely changed!! These copied videos often have different thumbnail pictures but sometimes they're the same. I have spent hundreds of hours preparing and uploading these videos and it is VERY UPSETTING & DISCOURAGING to discover this RAMPANT COPYING & RE-POSTING! It is just PLAIN MEAN! I would appreciate it very much if you would avoid any videos by "All Star Party" & "Kirdie Ferdin". Thanks to all of you for your views...

The original Rose Grant/Alvarez and Star Trek's Lieutenant Commander Data recreate the opening and closing numbers from Bye Bye Birdie. Chita says: "The people who try and change 'Birdie' tend to mess it up. It's anchored in a particular time and place. In my opinion, the original ending that (director) Gower Champion gave it is inspired. The musical theater that I came from always ended the same way: After all these big numbers, the whole cast comes downstage and sings whatever was supposed to be the show's hit song in this big, overblown fashion. What Gower did to end 'Birdie' was to have two people, Albert and Rose singing this very simple, very sweet song called 'Rosie' and just walking into the sunset. It couldn't have been more effective or more beautiful."

Sunny morning, sunny afternoon
When it's always June, there's no time to cry
Days keep passing, but they're all the same
Seasons never change
And the years are long
Oh, the years are long
Shady river carry me away
Shady river carry me away
Take me off and bring me back another day
City streetlights, how I miss the dark
(???) off the mark when it left me here
Old man moonlight tryin' to keep me blue
And the stars try to
They won't let me go
Won't you let me go?
Shady river carry me away
Shady river carry me away
Take me off and bring me back another day
When I'm tired, and start to think I'm through
Tryin' to be true, but it's awfully hard
Oh, so hard to do
Shady river carry me away
Shady river carry me away
Take me off and bring me back another day
Shady river carry me away
Shady river carry me away
