Well historically speaking the original Central American countries are only Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica, those five countries were actually twice a country named Central America, but since, they have separated, Panama got its independence later along with Belize and are also considered Central American countries due to them being geographically in the Central American isthmus,so everywhere I go the only countries considered Central America are those seven countries.
Countries like Cuba, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Puerto Rico etc etc are not considered Central America because they have no historic attachment to that word, those are considered Caribbean countries, and they have always identified with that word historically, Mexico is also not part of Central America, they are in North America, well technically speaking Central America is the southern most region of North America so are North Americans as well, but not regionally.
Countries like Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica are the only ones who have the word Central America on their flag's seal because they were all once united as a single country named the Federal Republic of Central America, Belize and Panama are physically part of the Central American geography so Guatemalans, Salvadorians, Hondurans, Nicaraguans, and Costa Ricans consider Panamanians and Belizeans as Central Americans too, but not Mexicans, Cubans, Dominicans etc.
Central America is not a continent, and I'm not claiming it to be. Many like to point out that these are North American countries, and they are right. For the sake of memorization I like chunking countries into manageable regions. Just like the "East Coast" is known by residents of the United States of America as the eastern Seaboard of that country, "Central America" is a colloquial term and not an "official" region to many people. STORYLINE
Hurricane Ivan bore down on Jamaica on Friday, prompting the government to order a half million (m) people to flee coastal areas.
Ivan was forecast to make a direct hit on Kingston, the sprawling capital of
one million (m) people in the southeast, and smash across the island to exit around Montego Bay in the northwest.
Meteorologists have warned of "life-threatening" flash floods and mudslides.
On Friday morning the storm's leading edge was already kicking up heavy rain and winds off the island's eastern tip, forcing authorities to close the airport and leaving hundreds of tourists stranded.
In the capital, streets were empty as people stayed home boarding up their houses and setting up shelters in schools and public buildings.
Those who did venture out queued for food and provisions in shops still open for business.
Businesses were being boarded up in commercial centres and armed private guards and police were already in the streets to guard against possible looting.
Montego Bay has already seen some looting.
Ivan, a Category 4 hurricane on a scale of 5 with winds of 145 mph (230
kph), could strengthen before striking the narrow 145-mile-long (230-kilometre-long) island Friday afternoon.
In its wake, it left Grenada a wasteland of flattened houses, twisted metal and splintered wood.
The death toll rose on Friday to 32, and was expected to increase.
Police nearly doubled the toll in Grenada to 22 including two unidentified foreign yachters.
US officials also ordered people to evacuate from the Florida Keys after forecasters said the storm - the fourth major hurricane of the Atlantic season - could hit the island chain by Sunday after passing the Cayman Islands and crossing Cuba.
Ivan is the fiercest hurricane to hit the Caribbean islands in a decade.

The Caribbean (/ˌkærᵻˈbiːən/ or /kəˈrɪbiən/; Spanish: Caribe; Dutch: 
Caraïben ; Caribbean Hindustani: कैरिबियन (Kairibiyana); French: Caraïbe or more commonly Antilles) is a region that consists of the Caribbean Sea, its islands (some surrounded by the Caribbean Sea and some bordering both the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean), and the surrounding coasts. The region is southeast of the Gulf of Mexico and the North American mainland, east of Central America, and north of South America.
Situated largely on the Caribbean Plate, the region comprises more than 700 islands, islets, reefs, and cays. (See the list.) These islands generally form island arcs that delineate the eastern and northern edges of the Caribbean Sea. The Caribbean islands, consisting of the Greater Antilles on the north and the Lesser Antilles on the south and east (including the Leeward Antilles), are part of the somewhat larger West Indies grouping, which also includes the Lucayan Archipelago (comprising The Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Islands) north of the Greater Antilles and Caribbean Sea. In a wider sense, the mainland countries of Belize, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana are also included.

Nation (from Latin: natio, "people, tribe, kin, genus, class, flock") is a social concept with no uncontroversial definition, but that is most commonly used to designate larger groups or collectives of people with common characteristics attributed to them—including language, traditions, customs (mores), habits (habitus), and ethnicity. A nation, by comparison, is more impersonal, abstract, and overtly political than an ethnic group. It is a cultural-political community that has become conscious of its autonomy, unity, and particular interests.

On Friday morning the storm's leading edge was already kicking up heavy rain and winds off the island's eastern tip, forcing authorities to close the airport and leaving hundreds of tourists stranded. In the capital, streets were empty as people stayed home boarding up their houses and setting up shelters in schools and public buildings. Those who did venture out queued for food and provisions in shops still open for business. Businesses were being boarded up in commercial centres and armed private guards and police were already in the streets to guard against possible looting. Montego Bay has already seen some looting. Ivan, a Category 4 hurricane on a scale of 5 with winds of 145 mph (230 kph), could strengthen before striking the narrow 145-mile-long (230-kilometre-long) island Friday afternoon. In its wake, it left Grenada a wasteland of flattened houses, twisted metal and splintered wood. The death toll rose on Friday to 32, and was expected to increase. Police nearly doubled the toll in Grenada to 22 including two unidentified foreign yachters. US officials also ordered people to evacuate from the Florida Keys after forecasters said the storm - the fourth major hurricane of the Atlantic season - could hit the island chain by Sunday after passing the Cayman Islands and crossing Cuba. Ivan is the fiercest hurricane to hit the Caribbean islands in a decade. Well historically speaking the original Central American countries are only Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica, those five countries were actually twice a country named Central America, but since, they have separated, Panama got its independence later along with Belize and are also considered Central American countries due to them being geographically in the Central American isthmus,so everywhere I go the only countries considered Central America are those seven countries.
Countries like Cuba, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Puerto Rico etc etc are not considered Central America because they have no historic attachment to that word, those are considered Caribbean countries, and they have always identified with that word historically, Mexico is also not part of Central America, they are in North America, well technically speaking Central America is the southern most region of North America so are North Americans as well, but not regionally.
Countries like Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica are the only ones who have the word Central America on their flag's seal because they were all once united as a single country named the Federal Republic of Central America, Belize and Panama are physically part of the Central American geography so Guatemalans, Salvadorians, Hondurans, Nicaraguans, and Costa Ricans consider Panamanians and Belizeans as Central Americans too, but not Mexicans, Cubans, Dominicans etc.
Central America is not a continent, and I'm not claiming it to be. Many like to point out that these are North American countries, and they are right. For the sake of memorization I like chunking countries into manageable regions. STORYLINE
Hurricane Ivan bore down on Jamaica on Friday, prompting the government to order a half million (m) people to flee coastal areas.
Ivan was forecast to make a direct hit on Kingston, the sprawling capital of
one million (m) people in the southeast, and smash across the island to exit around Montego Bay in the northwest.
Meteorologists have warned of "life-threatening" flash floods and mudslides.
On Friday morning the storm's leading edge was already kicking up heavy rain and winds off the island's eastern tip, forcing authorities to close the airport and leaving hundreds of tourists stranded.
In the capital, streets were empty as people stayed home boarding up their houses and setting up shelters in schools and public buildings.
Those who did venture out queued for food and provisions in shops still open for business.
Businesses were being boarded up in commercial centres and armed private guards and police were already in the streets to guard against possible looting.
Montego Bay has already seen some looting.
Ivan, a Category 4 hurricane on a scale of 5 with winds of 145 mph (230
kph), could strengthen before striking the narrow 145-mile-long (230-kilometre-long) island Friday afternoon.
In its wake, it left Grenada a wasteland of flattened houses, twisted metal and splintered wood.
The death toll rose on Friday to 32, and was expected to increase.
Police nearly doubled the toll in Grenada to 22 including two unidentified foreign yachters.
US officials also ordered people to evacuate from the Florida Keys after forecasters said the storm - the fourth major hurricane of the Atlantic season - could hit the island chain by Sunday after passing the Cayman Islands and crossing Cuba.
Ivan is the fiercest hurricane to hit the Caribbean islands in a decade.

The Caribbean Novel Since 1945 offers a comparative analysis of fiction from across the pan-caribbean, exploring the relationship between literary form, cultural practice, and the nation-state. For decades China and Taiwan used dollar diplomacy to win over small Caribbean nations where small projects building roads, bridges, wells and fisheries go a long way. But Beijing's growing economic clout is tipping the scales in the region. Caribbean trade with China increased 42 percent from 2003, the Chinese news agency Xinhua reported. The United States has applauded China's economic offensive, seeing it as a herald of political reform. "China's intensified interest in the Western Hemisphere does not imply a lack of focus by the United States," Roger Noriega, the U.S. assistant secretary for Western Hemisphere affairs, said in a letter to the editor of New Jersey's Newark Star Ledger. "The United States has long stood for expansion of global trade and consolidating democracy."
Recently, two Caribbean countries -- Dominica and Grenada -- switched allegiance to China, abandoning Taiwan, which China calls "a renegade province." Though democratic Taiwan is self-governing, communist Beijing insists the island is part of China. The two sides split amid civil war in 1949 and Beijing has since refused to have ties with any government that recognizes Taiwan. "Democratic, market-oriented Taiwan is a thorn in its side," said Steve Johnson, senior policy analyst at the conservative Washington, D.C.-based Heritage Foundation. Two weeks before Dominica changed sides, Taiwan gave it $9 million. China promised Dominica $112 million over the next six years.
Chinese Vice President Zeng Qinghong visited Jamaica for a three-day China-Caribbean economic and trade forum attended by hundreds of Chinese and Caribbean government officials and business executives. Robert Stephens, chairman of Jamaica's Fair Trade Commission and senior vice president of the Jamaican Port Authority, looks forward to future deals. "The Chinese would distribute goods throughout the Caribbean. Any increase in business would benefit Jamaica as a logistic distribution hub," he said. By the end of the forum, China added Antigua, the Bahamas, Barbados, Dominica, Jamaica, and St. Lucia to its approved travel destinations, promising the region a bigger piece of the fast-growing Chinese tourist market. Caribbean governments had sought the approved status to boost a tourism industry hard hit by the September 11terror attacks in the United States.
In the Caribbean, only five countries still maintain relations with Taiwan -- the Dominican Republic, Haiti, St. Kitts and Nevis, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. But China has commercial missions in the Dominican Republic and in Haiti, where in October China dispatched 95 police officers to join a U.N. peacekeeping force. It is Beijing's first contribution to a U.N. mission in the Western Hemisphere.

Despite their name they are no relation to the indigenous aboriginal “Indians” who inhabit or formerly inhabited the area. The East Indians are, along with Black Afro-Caribbeans (“West Indians”), one of the two major ethnic groups in Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana and Suriname. There are also East Indian communities in Jamaica (one estimate for 1980 gives the East Indian population as 50,000), Grenada and the French islands of Martinique and Guadeloupe.
Indians were first brought to the Caribbean from the mid-1840s to work on white-owned sugar plantations as indentured labour to replace newly freed African slaves. The majority of immigrants were young men; later disturbances on the plantations forced the authorities to try and correct the imbalance. Indenture was usually for five years and the labourer was subject to restricting and paternalistic regulations which were sometimes described as “a new system of slavery”. After an initial number of years it was possible for the labourer to return to India but since many were offered land in order to entice them to stay near the estates, most stayed in their new country.
The racial tensions and stereotypes of later years were formed during the colonial period. Indians worked for less than Africans and were regarded as cheap and malleable labour. There were differences of culture between the Hindu and Muslim Indians and the Christian Africans. While the Africans, who were more likely to be literate in English, filled the jobs in the urban and commercial sectors, Indians were most likely to remain labourers and small farmers.

Around midnight on May 3, Dana Seetahal, a prominent attorney and former senator in Trinidad and Tobago, had just left a casino in the capital of Port of Spain when her vehicle was stopped by another car blocking the road. A van pulled up alongside and let loose a burst of gunfire, killing her in a well orchestrated hit.
Her murder was one of approximately 170 that have occurred in the Caribbean nation so far this year, putting it on course for one of the highest murder rates in the world. The country saw only 93 murders in 1999. Last year, there were 407.
VICE News visited the slums of Port of Spain and spoke with police, activists, community leaders, and gangsters to understand the country's decade-plus spike in killings. Many of the murders are attributed to ruthless and politically connected street gangs who control territories that are sometimes no larger than a city block. The gangs fight over lucrative government contracts meant to provide social services and combat unemployment.
But gang violence is merely a symptom of a bigger problem. Trinidad has become an important stop for drugs headed to West Africa and the United States. Many observers point to "the big fish" — the nameless political and business elites who are behind drug trafficking and the culture of endemic corruption and murder that come with it. They are accused of turning a country rich in oil and gas deposits into their own personal narco-state, fostering impunity through a web of bribes and murders. Unlike the profits from the energy industry, however, this phenomenon trickles all the way down to the street level.

Jamaica is an island country situated in the Caribbean Sea, comprising the third-largest island of the Greater Antilles. The island, 10,990 square kilometres (4,240 sq mi) in area, lies about 145 kilometres (90 mi) south of Cuba, and 191 kilometres (119 mi) west of Hispaniola, the island containing the nation-states of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Jamaica is the fifth-largest island country in the Caribbean.[5]
Once a Spanish possession known as Santiago, in 1655 it came under the rule of England (later Great Britain), and was called Jamaica. It achieved full independence from the United Kingdom on 6 August 1962.[6] With 2.8 million people, it is the third most populous Anglophone country in the Americas, after the United States and Canada. Kingston is the country's largest city and its capital, with a population of 937,700.[7][8] Jamaica has a large diaspora around the world, due to emigration from the country.[9]
Jamaica is a Commonwealth realm, with Queen Elizabeth II as its monarch and head of state. Her appointed representative in the country is the Governor-General of Jamaica, currently Patrick Allen. The head of government and Prime Minister of Jamaica is Portia Simpson-Miller. Jamaica is a parliamentary constitutional monarchy with legislative power vested in the bicameral Parliament of Jamaica, consisting of an appointed Senate and a directly elected House of RepresentativesThe Arawak and Taino indigenous people, originating in South America, settled on the island between 4000 and 1000 BC.[17] When Christopher Columbus arrived in 1494, there were more than 200 villages ruled by caciques (chiefs of villages). The south coast of Jamaica was the most populated, especially around the area now known as Old Harbour.[17] The Taino still inhabited Jamaica when the English took control of the island in 1655.[17] The Jamaican National Heritage Trust is attempting to locate and document any evidence of the Taino/Arawaks.[18]
Spanish rule
Christopher Columbus claimed Jamaica for Spain after landing there in 1494. His probable landing point was Dry Harbour, now called Discovery Bay.,[19] although there is some debate that it might have been St. Ann's Bay[citation needed]. St. Ann's Bay was named "Saint Gloria" by Columbus, as the first sighting of the land. One mile west of St. Ann's Bay is the site of the first Spanish settlement on the island, Sevilla, which was established in 1509 and abandoned around 1524 because it was deemed unhealthy.[20] The capital was moved to Spanish Town, then called St. Jago de la Vega, around 1534 (at present-day St. Catherine).[21]
British rule
Spanish Town has the oldest cathedral of the British colonies in the Caribbean.[21] The Spanish were forcibly evicted by the English at Ocho Rios in St. Ann. In 1655 the English, led by Sir William Penn and General Robert Venables, took over the last Spanish fort in Jamaica.[22] The name of Montego Bay, the capital of the parish of St. James, was derived from the Spanish name manteca bahía (or Bay of Lard), alluding to the lard-making industry based on processing the numerous boars in the area.[23]
Henry Morgan was a famous Caribbean pirate and privateer; he had first come to the West Indies as an indentured servant, like most of the early English colonists.[24]
In 1660, the population of Jamaica was about 4,500 white and 1,500 black,[25] but by as early as the 1670s, black people formed a majority of the population.[26]
In 1394, France prohibited Jews as residents of their country. By 1660, Jamaica had become a refuge for Jews in the New World, also attracting those who had been expelled from Spain and Portugal. A settlement of Jews had arrived in 1510, soon after the son of Christopher Columbus settled on the island. Primarily merchants and traders, the Jewish community was forced to live a clandestine life, calling themselves "Portugals". After the British took over rule of Jamaica, the Jews decided the best defense against Spain's regaining control was to encourage making the colony a base for Caribbean pirates. With the pirates installed in Port Royal, the Spanish would be deterred from attacking. The British leaders agreed with the viability of this strategy to forestall outside aggression.[27]
When the English captured Jamaica in 1655, the Spanish colonists fled after freeing their slaves.[22] The slaves dispersed into the mountains, joining the maroons, those who had previously escaped from the Spanish to live with the Taínos.[28] The Jamaican Maroons fought the British during the 18th century.[28] The name is still used today for their modern descendants. During the centuries of slavery, Maroons established free communities in the mountainous interior of Jamaica, where they maintained their freedom and independence for generations.
