Tom Wiscombe welcomes the audience to the inaugural screening of the SCI-Arc Cinema Series, featuring Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining (1980), and introduces special guest Jan Harlan, executive producer of Kubrick’s films from Barry Lyndon (1975) to Eyes Wide Shut (1999). He explains that Harlan and Michael Stock will discuss his work with Kubrick before the film, and after the screening Harlan will take questions from the audience.
Harlan begins the pre-screening talk by quoting his brother-in-law Kubrick, “Never introduce the film!” In response to Michael Stock’s questions, Harlan describes assisting Kubrick in the late Sixties and early Seventies with projects that never were filmed (a Napoleon biography, a film about the Holocaust), and acquiring the rights to Arthur Schnitzler’s Traumnovelle, filmed decades later.
Harlan describes his musical background—both parents were opera singers—and his suggesting to Kubrick Richard Strauss’ “Also sprach Zarathustra,” and negotiating with Wendy Carlos for Clockwork Orange and the Shining. He notes that the spaceship docking sequence in 2001 was not originally cut to Johann Strauss’s “Blue Danube Waltz”, but once Kubrick selected it, the whole sequence had to be recut.
Harlan isn’t sure “obsessive” is the word to characterize Kubrick’s method. “It’s like being in love. Your priorities change. It’s how it has to be if you make a film.” He stresses the stamina and focus required to see films to completion, over many years.
Harlan recalls that Kubrick’s contract with Stephen King stipulated that Kubrick had free hand to edit, add and change anything in the original book. He recalls Kubrick entering the project as an experiment—something radically unlike his other movies, a “horror puppet show.” When someone in the crew objected to an incongruity, Kubrick responded, “It’s a ghost film!”
After the screening of The Shining, Harlan responds to comments from the audience regarding connecting themes between Kubrick’s movies, the commentary that the Shining has been subjected to, the film’s initial failure, the deliberate over-acting. He argues that the reason the script for the Shining never stopped getting revised was that with a serious film, the script is easier to figure out, but when the film doesn’t make any sense, it’s harder to make.

Jan Harlan
Jan Harlan (born May 5, 1937, Karlsruhe, Germany) is an American executive producer and the brother of Christiane Kubrick, director Stanley Kubrick's widow.
He started out working for Kubrick as a researcher, most prominently on Napoleon, Kubrick's never-filmed epic about the French military leader, in 1968, when Kubrick asked him, as a German speaker to accompany him to Romania to organise the army scenes for the film. Harlan acted as Kubrick's executive producer for Barry Lyndon (1975), The Shining (1980), Full Metal Jacket (1987), Eyes Wide Shut (1999), and was an assistant to the producer for A Clockwork Orange (1971). Harlan was also executive producer for Steven Spielberg's Artificial Intelligence: AI (2001), a collaboration between Spielberg and Kubrick. Harlan also directed a feature-length documentary about Kubrick, Stanley Kubrick: A Life in Pictures (2001).
In 2009 he assisted Alison Castle, a Taschen editor, in creating the book Stanley Kubrick's Napoleon: The Greatest Movie Never Made and gave a talk about the Kubrick Napoleon archives at Cambridge Film Festival in September 2010 with Alison Castle. He is the nephew of the German filmmaker Veit Harlan, best known for his work during the Third Reich including Jud Süß (1940), an antijewish propaganda film. Jan Harlan has three sons, Manuel, Dominic and Ben. He is married to Maria.

Stanley Kubrick
Stanley Kubrick (/ˈkuːbrɪk/; July 26, 1928 – March 7, 1999) was an American film director, screenwriter, producer, cinematographer, editor, and photographer. Part of the New Hollywood film-making wave, Kubrick's films are considered by film historian Michel Ciment to be "among the most important contributions to world cinema in the twentieth century", and he is frequently cited as one of the greatest and most influential directors in cinematic history. His films, which are typically adaptations of novels or short stories, cover a wide range of genres, and are noted for their realism, dark humor, unique cinematography, extensive set designs, and evocative use of music.

Christiane Kubrick
Christiane Kubrick (née Harlan; born 10 May 1932) is a German actress, dancer, painter and singer. She was born into a theatrical family, and was the wife of filmmaker Stanley Kubrick from 1958 until his death in 1999.
Life and career
Christiane Susanne Harlan was born in Braunschweig, Lower Saxony in 1932, the daughter of two opera singers Fritz Moritz Harlan and his wife Ingeborg (née de Freitas). She was trained as an actress but became better known as an artist. Success in her earlier career as an actress led to her being cast in the film Paths of Glory by Stanley Kubrick, credited as Susanne Christian.
In the final scene of Paths of Glory, the young woman she plays is forced to sing to a rowdy, disillusioned tavern-full of French soldiers. Her rendition in German of the German folk song Ein treuer Husar (The Faithful Hussar) slowly wins the hearts of the crowd of men who stop their mocking and carousing, and, one by one, begin to hum and sing along, many of them in tears.

He explains that Harlan and Michael Stock will discuss his work with Kubrick before the film, and after the screening Harlan will take questions from the audience. Tom Wiscombe welcomes the audience to the inaugural screening of the SCI-Arc Cinema Series, featuring Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining (1980), and introduces special guest Jan Harlan, executive producer of Kubrick’s films from Barry Lyndon (1975) to Eyes Wide Shut (1999). He explains that Harlan and Michael Stock will discuss his work with Kubrick before the film, and after the screening Harlan will take questions from the audience.
Harlan begins the pre-screening talk by quoting his brother-in-law Kubrick, “Never introduce the film!” In response to Michael Stock’s questions, Harlan describes assisting Kubrick in the late Sixties and early Seventies with projects that never were filmed (a Napoleon biography, a film about the Holocaust), and acquiring the rights to Arthur Schnitzler’s Traumnovelle, filmed decades later.
Harlan describes his musical background—both parents were opera singers—and his suggesting to Kubrick Richard Strauss’ “Also sprach Zarathustra,” and negotiating with Wendy Carlos for Clockwork Orange and the Shining. He notes that the spaceship docking sequence in 2001 was not originally cut to Johann Strauss’s “Blue Danube Waltz”, but once Kubrick selected it, the whole sequence had to be recut.
Harlan isn’t sure “obsessive” is the word to characterize Kubrick’s method. “It’s like being in love. Your priorities change. It’s how it has to be if you make a film.” He stresses the stamina and focus required to see films to completion, over many years.
Harlan recalls that Kubrick’s contract with Stephen King stipulated that Kubrick had free hand to edit, add and change anything in the original book. He recalls Kubrick entering the project as an experiment—something radically unlike his other movies, a “horror puppet show.” When someone in the crew objected to an incongruity, Kubrick responded, “It’s a ghost film!”
After the screening of The Shining, Harlan responds to comments from the audience regarding connecting themes between Kubrick’s movies, the commentary that the Shining has been subjected to, the film’s initial failure, the deliberate over-acting. He argues that the reason the script for the Shining never stopped getting revised was that with a serious film, the script is easier to figure out, but when the film doesn’t make any sense, it’s harder to make.
