A United Nations panel of experts has told the Security Council that Saudi Arabia violated international humanitarian law in its deadly air raids on a funeral in Yemen.
The UN monitors say Saudi warplanes carried out a DOUBLE TAP airstrike. The panel reports two airstrikes in quick succession on the funeral which was attended by Yemen's top political figures. It says the timing between the two strikes indicate the deliberate use of the double tap tactic so that individuals including medics responding to the first explosion are caught by the second strike. The report adds that the second attack resulted in a disproportionately higher numbers of civilian casualties which could amount to a war crime. More than 140 people were killed and 525 injured in the airstrikes on a community hall in Yemen on October 8.

Yemen (
i/ˈjɛmən/; Arabic: اليَمَن al-Yaman), officially known as the Republic of Yemen (الجمهورية اليمنية al-Jumhūrīyah al-Yamanīyah), is an Arab country in Western Asia, occupying the southwestern to the southern end of the Arabian Peninsula. Yemen is the second largest country in the peninsula, occupying 527,970 km2 (203,850 sq mi). The coastline stretches for about 2,000 km (1,200 mi). It is bordered by Saudi Arabia to the north, the Red Sea to the west, the Gulf of Aden and Arabian Sea to the south, and Oman to the east. Although Yemen's constitutionally stated capital is the city of Sana'a, the city has been under rebel control since February 2015. Because of this, Yemen's capital has been temporarily relocated to the port city of Aden, on the southern coast. Yemen's territory includes more than 200 islands; the largest of these is Socotra.
Yemen was the home of the Sabaeans (biblical Sheba), a trading state that flourished for over a thousand years and probably also included parts of modern-day Ethiopia and Eritrea. In 275 AD, the region came under the rule of the later Jewish influenced Himyarite Kingdom. Christianity arrived in the 4th century AD whereas Judaism and local paganism were already established. Islam spread quickly in the 7th century and Yemenite troops were crucial in the expansion of the early Islamic conquests. Administration of Yemen has long been notoriously difficult. Several dynasties emerged from the 9th to 16th century, the Rasulid being the strongest and most prosperous. The country was divided between the Ottoman and British empires in the early 20th century. The Zaydi Mutawakkilite Kingdom of Yemen was established after World War I in North Yemen before the creation of Yemen Arab Republic in 1962. South Yemen remained a British protectorate until 1967. The two Yemeni states united to form the modern republic of Yemen in 1990.

The UN monitors say Saudi warplanes carried out a DOUBLE TAP airstrike. The panel reports two airstrikes in quick succession on the funeral which was attended by Yemen's top political figures. It says the timing between the two strikes indicate the deliberate use of the double tap tactic so that individuals including medics responding to the first explosion are caught by the second strike. The report adds that the second attack resulted in a disproportionately higher numbers of civilian casualties which could amount to a war crime. More than 140 people were killed and 525 injured in the airstrikes on a community hall in Yemen on October 8.

But security worries - combined with a financial slump - has seen production plummet by 50 percent in recent years.
Thick, rich and lusciously dense like liquid gold.
This amber coloured treasure is a luxury commodity in Arab and Western countries.
Yemeni honey is considered to have a unique taste and quality - thanks to the diversity of the terrain and soil, as well as the climate and variety of trees across the country.
But according to seller Adel Jabor, the bee's knees of the honey world is Al Sidr honey.
"There are five to six kinds of honey," he says.
"The most famous kind is Al Ilb honey which is (also known as) Al Sidr honey, and then Al Samr honey, then Al Mara'ee (flower) honey, then Al Salam honey, and then Al Debaa honey."
The golden liquid is revered for its purity and its resistance to crystalising and freezing.
Al Sidr, or buckthorn, honey is used in the treatment of a number of diseases, included ulcers, asthma, infections, cancer, and erectile dysfunction.
As a result, it is not cheap and retails for around 15-thousand Yemeni Rial (70 US dollars) per kilo.
But the sweet stuff is in trouble.
The US-backed government offensive against Al-Qaida's strongholds has taken its toll on Yemen's bees and beekeepers.
Constant security concerns, combined with an financial slump, has led to a 50 percent decrease in honey production in recent years.
Total production fell from 5000 tonnes in 2012 to about 2600 tonnes in 2013, according to figures from the Yemeni Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation.
The best quality Yemeni honey is produced in the provinces of Hadramout and Shabwa in the southeast of the country, among the most restive areas in Yemen.
There are about 100-thousand beekeepers in all across the country, boasting more than 1.3 million hives.
Khaled al-Thabhani, a beekeeper who works on a farm outside the capital Sanaa, says fellow producers are struggling.
"The economic situation in Yemen has negatively affected the honey production, marketing and selling honey, and it has negatively affected the individuals' income," al Thabhani says.
Beekeepers say the government has not done enough to help the honey business - leading to a loss in export revenues.

Yemen’s Health Ministry accused Saudi Arabia of using internationally banned weapons
The ministry's spokesman, Tamim Shami, says symptoms of some of the injured Yemenis show they were exposed to prohibited weapons dropped by Saudi war machines. During the briefing, Shami also highlighted the worsening humanitarian situation due to the shortage of medical supplies. He said that more than 23-thousand people are currently suffering from dengue fever and Malaria. Saudi fighter jets have also reportedly targeted drug containers used by charity organization Oxfam to fight deadly viruses. Meanwhile, over a dozen aid organizations have called for a permanent ceasefire in Yemen. (https://www.icrc.org/casebook/) is an online platform that regroups a comprehensive IHL course outline, more than 350 case studies, and various pedagogical resources for professors. This webinar gathered students from the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (Peru), Université Laval (Canada), the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights (Switzerland), and the University of Nairobi (Kenya). The students solved a case study pertaining to challenges to providing health care in armed conflict: the case of Yemen, together with a panel of experts. Questions discussed by the students and panel included the scope of the protection afforded to the wounded and the sick under IHL, protection of medical units and targeting of hospitals.

In ancient Yemen, named by the ancient Romans "Arabia Felix" ;Happy Arabia, there were 6 principal kingdoms: the Sabaean, Awsanian, Minaean, Qatabanian, Hadhramawtian, Himyarite. Sabaean was the oldest and one of the most powerful. Saba in Hebrew is "Sheba". Thus the fabled Queen of Sheba came from Sabaean kingdom. Queens in Arabia were common, and both the Bible and Quran refer to the Queen of Sheba whose real name was Bilquis!
Sana'a, the capital, is one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world. Throughout in Yemen, Stone Age people left evidence of their occupation from 400,000BC (Discovered in Tahama on the Red sea of Yemen). Bronze Age people from 2000BC had developed many agricultural settlements throughout the area. Foremost of these was Marib where a huge dam was built to irrigate the terraced fields found here. The Marib Dam is considered the greatest technical structure of antiquity. You may see some of the ruins of this structure which collapsed around 600AD and which is nearby to a new dam serving the same purpose today.
Among Yemens natural and cultural attractions are four World Heritage sites:
1.The Old Walled City of Shibam in Wadi Hadhramaut, inscribed by UNESCO in 1982, is nicknamed "Manhattan of the Desert", because of its "skyscrapers". Surrounded by a fortified wall, the city is one of the oldest and examples of urban planning based on the principle of vertical construction.
2.The ancient city of Sana'a.
Even the name itself, Sana'a has a great history. It was previously known as the city of Shem, named after Shem the son of Noah,father of all semites, who was the first to order to build the city. It has also carried the name Azal after one of the sons of Yaqtin ibn Aa'z as mentioned in the Old Testament.
While the historical accuracy of such stories might be questioned, what is certain is that history in Yemen dates from the very dawn of humankind.
Sana'a an altitude of more than 7,000 feet has been inhabited for over two and a half millennia. Sanaa has 103 mosques, 14 hammams (traditional bath houses) and more than 6,000 houses that survive all date.
3.Close to the Red Sea Coast, the Historic Town of Zabid, was Yemens capital from the 13th to 15th Century. It played an important role for many centuries, because of its UNIVERSITY , which was a centre of learning for the whole Arab world. Arabic numbers were used there first on the peninsule and Algebra is said to have been invented there in the early 8th century by the little known scholar al-Jaladi.
4.The latest addition to Yemens list of World Heritage Sites is the Socotra Archipelago. Socotra or "Eipheba Sakhotora" which used to mean "The island of Happiness".Mentioned by Marco Polo in the 13th Century, Socotra islands and two rocky islets near the Gulf of Aden has rich biodiversity. 37% of Socotras 825 plants, 90% of its reptiles and 95% of its snails are unique and DO NOT OCCUR anywhere else in the world. It is home to 192 bird species, 253 species of coral, 730 species of costal fish and 300 species of crab and lobster, as well as a range of Aloes and the Dragons Blood Tree (Dracaena cinnabari) or as it's known in Yemen: The tree of Cain and Abel (The name of this tree has always been linked with the name of Socotra due to its fame and importance since ancient times.The island people make cracks on the trees trunk and then a viscous red fluid flows and is left till it is dried up. After that they collect it and pack it for export.It is further used as medicine and many legends have been woven around it. According to one legend the tree grew from the blood of Abel when the first human crime occurred. As the blood flowed, the tree sprang from it. )
Yemen today is still not well known by the west so there could be more of these peculiarities on this beautiful mysterious country.

Yemen's markets, once bustling with tourists, have been unusually quiet around this year's Eid al-Fitr.
Less visitors are coming to the country because of security concerns - and that means a loss of trade for the businesses who rely on them.
STORYLINE:
The Gate of Yemen.
Decorated with distinct geometric patterns, it is part of the old walled city of Sanaa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
In the past, tourists flocked to this part of the Yemeni capital, attracted by its unique visual character and welcoming locals.
But as violence continues to plague the poorest Arab nation, the Yemeni tourism industry is experiencing a slump.
Market vendors in old Sanaa say they're feeling the pinch.
Sales of traditional items, such as this jambiya dagger - a Yemeni symbol of masculinity - have slowed down to a trickle.
Ali Bishr, who sells silver and jewellery, says the number of tourists visiting the old city has gone down.
"Tourism, for us, greatly affects our work, and our work has decreased by at least two thirds. Our trade has decreased, because the silver trade was largely here for tourists who come from abroad to buy silver and other things," he says.
Yemen's economy has already been battered by an ongoing war against rebels in the south and an intense US-backed offensive against an al-Qaida offshoot in much of its lawless hinterland and several cities.
There has been a noticeable absence of security forces throughout the country, including at popular tourist sites and areas housing ancient antiquities.
The high security threat level has led to a number of western countries, including Britain and the US, to issue permanent advisories warning their nationals against all travel to Yemen.
A total of 104,000 tourists visited Yemen in 2013, less than half of what neighbouring Oman has drawn in recent years.
Tourism-related industries such as silversmiths, sellers of agate crystals, antique shops and translation offices are disappearing.
Abd Al Gabar Al Salawi, Undersecretary at the Yemeni Ministry of Tourism, claims the situation has not been helped by the government's policies.
"A lot of the acts of terrorism, instability, and kidnappings have affected tourism. And the government has not found any radical solutions to these problems. In the sense that this is the wrong sort of policy to deal with these incidents which affect tourism, such as ongoing despair, nepotism and the meeting of (terrorists') demands in unlawful ways," says Al Salawi.
Foreign travellers have been killed in bomb attacks in Yemen in recent years.
There have also been kidnappings and abductions, even in urban areas.
Tourism has also been affected by worsening political conditions since a popular uprising removed former president Ali Abdullah Saleh in 2012.

The Republic Of Yemen covers a large part of the southwest of the Arabian Peninsula and contains several fascinating historical sites. East of Sanaa on the ancient Frankincense route, is the town of Marib that was once the residence of the legendary Queen Of Saba and in the extreme north is the town of Sadah, a region known for its powerful tribes. In the centre of the Djebel Harraz is the picturesque mountain village of Manakhah. Due to its location it was once a strategic point on the ancient trading route between the sea and the highlands. The breathtaking architecture of its buildings still testifies to the former prosperity of a village that today is well known for its popular market. Al Hudaydah was once the most important Turkish harbour on the Red Sea. The city was a commercial rival of the British occupied city of Aden to the south which, during colonial times, was of great importance in securing a sea route to India. In addition to the recent modernisation of the harbour the fishing industry still plays an important role and the fertile coastal waters of the Red Sea still ensure a good catch. To the south of Al Hudaydah is the legendary old harbour of Al Mokha, the former centre of the country’s coffee trade from which the world renowned Mocha coffee derived its name. Despite their present poverty the people here are a proud race and the ancient name of the Yemen, Arabia Felix, or “Arabia The Content”, is still a thing of the present.

WASHINGTON Multiple missiles were fired again from a Houthi-controlled region in Yemen targeting an American warship in the Red Sea, a U.S. admiral said Saturday. No hits were reported.
Later, U.S. officials said the initial reports as described by Adm. John Richardson, the top Navy officer, were being reassessed, and they declined to provide full details of what happened.
“Earlier today a U.S. Strike Group transiting international waters in the Red Sea detected possible inbound missile threats and deployed appropriate defensive countermeasures,” Gary Ross, the commander of the U.S. Navy, told CBS News. “Our sailors and ships are unharmed, and we are still assessing the situation. We will continue to defend freedom of navigation in this critical waterway, and we will take all necessary steps to respond to threats and defend our personnel and ships.”
If confirmed, the missile launches would be the third attack in about a week targeting the destroyer USS Mason and other U.S. ships.The Mason once again appears to have come under attack in the Red Sea, again from coastal defense cruise missiles fired from the coast of Yemen,” Richardson, the chief of naval operations, told reporters Saturday in Baltimore.
Just two days earlier, a U.S. warship fired Tomahawk missiles into Yemen to destroy three radar sites that Pentagon leaders believed played a role in the earlier attacks.
A senior U.S. defense official said the Mason was in international waters when multiple incoming surface-to-surface missiles were reported by the ship’s crew to have been detected about 3:30 p.m. EDT. The Mason was not struck and no crew members were hurt.
The October 9 attack on the Mason and the amphibious transport USS Ponce, and Wednesday’s failed attacks prompted a retaliatory barrage of missiles from another warship, the USS Nitze on Thursday. Those U.S. strikes targeted three radar sites in Yemen territory controlled by Iran-backed Houthi rebels.
On Thursday, Iran deployed two warships to the Red Sea, but insisted the move was aimed at preventing piracy in the vital shipping lanes.
The U.S. military has been providing intelligence and logistics to Saudi-led coalition warplanes, which began targeting rebel Houthi positions inside Yemen earlier this year.

Yemen is on the brink of famine. BBC Arabic reveals exclusive footage of the growing humanitarian crisis in Yemen, where 2 million people are malnourished and over 325,000 children are at risk of starvation.
“If you don't die from an airstrike you die from being ill or starvation. And the hardest way to die is from starvation”, laments Dr Ashwaq Muharram. The war in Yemen has pushed a country which traditionally suffers from a shortage of food to the brink. The city of Hodeida was once prosperous, but airstrikes and conflict on the ground have isolated people in the surrounding villages and forced the closure of hundreds of hospitals. Furthermore, the Saudi-led coalition has blockaded Yemen's ports to prevent the Houthis rearming, resulting in a shortage of supplies, medicine and fuel. Without access to food or healthcare, millions are at risk. Children are those most affected. "I never imagined I would ever see a child like this in Yemen. It scares me that this may be the beginning of famine", says Dr. Muharram. As she watches over her emaciated son, one mother cries, “Although he's alive it's as though he's no longer here.” The extent of this looming disaster is yet to be seen, but what is clear is that if the situation continues, Yemen could lose an entire generation.

“I want to go out and play,” says eight-year-old Faris as he lies in his hospital bed. He was asleep at his home north of Sana’a when a missile hit his house, killing his mother and brother. In a desperate state, with severe burns, stomach injuries and a fractured leg, he pleads with his elderly grandfather: “Will I live? Will I live?” It is not just the bombing that threatens children, but a lack of crucial supplies puts countless lives at risk from starvation and disease. “About twenty percent of the children we see are diagnosed as malnourished, half of them severely so,” says Francesco of Medicins Sans Frontieres, who have been working desperately to alleviate the situation. “They just don’t have enough food, not nearly enough food.” Even these aid organisations have not been spared, however - in the past year alone, four Medicins Sans Frontieres hospitals have been targeted, leaving dozens of staff and patients killed or wounded. In this ever-worsening situation, there is no available relief and life is a daily struggle for survival.
