Palau (i/pəˈlaʊ/, historically Belau or Pelew), officially the Republic of Palau (Palauan: Beluu er a Belau), is an island country located in the western Pacific Ocean. The country's population of around 21,000 is spread across 250 islands, which form the western chain of the Caroline Islands in Micronesia. The most populous of these is Koror. The capital Ngerulmud is located on the nearby island of Babeldaob, in Melekeok State. Palau shares maritime boundaries with Indonesia, the Philippines, and the Federated States of Micronesia.
The country was originally settled around 3,000 years ago by migrants from the Philippines and sustained a Negrito population until around 900 years ago. The islands were first visited by Europeans in the 16th century, and were made part of the Spanish East Indies in 1574. Following Spain's defeat in the Spanish–American War in 1898, the islands were sold to Imperial Germany in 1899 under the terms of the German–Spanish Treaty, where they were administered as part of German New Guinea. The Imperial Japanese Navy conquered Palau during World War I, and the islands were later made a part of the Japanese-ruled South Pacific Mandate by the League of Nations. During World War II, skirmishes, including the major Battle of Peleliu, were fought between American and Japanese troops as part of the Mariana and Palau Islands campaign. Along with other Pacific Islands, Palau was made a part of the United States-governed Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands in 1947. Having voted against joining the Federated States of Micronesia in 1979, the islands gained full sovereignty in 1994 under a Compact of Free Association with the United States.

Plot: In the post Spanish civil war years, Catalan kids would sit in circles among the ruins and tell stories, known as "aventis" (the film's original title in Catalan, its original language). These tales mix war stories, local gossip, comic book characters, fantasy and real events. The "aventis" told in this film are told in flashback. In the mid 80s, 45 or so years after the age of the "aventis," a doctor and a nurse-nun (who grew up together, and now are co-workers in a hospital) identify the corpse of one of the main characters of the "aventis" of their childhood and adolescence. Besides the interesting flashbacks - a chronical of the Civil War in a "typical" Barcelona microcosm itself, the discovery of this body (belonging to someone long presumed dead) leads to other surprises and unresolved doubts, several decades later.

Over 470 miles east of the Philippines and locked in by the stretching Pacific Ocean, Palau is a rare oasis, a self-contained, isolated archipelago thriving with biodiversity and abundance. Palau has been named one of the Underwater Wonders of the World. An archipeligo surrounded by a fringe reef, Palau's waters are packed with a great diversity of marine life. x An attraction most can only dream of, this daring and unusual phenomena, Jellyfish Lake, departs radically from convention; for it is an enclosed body of water wherein - over the course of a millennia - resident jellyfish have completely lost their sting because they have not had to fight off predators. Instead, they spend their days ...

A mini documentary by Silke de Vos. All around the world nature is threatened by the onslaught of mankind. It is commendable that the state of Palau tries to stem the tide in its territory by far-reaching conservation measures. Almost 60% of the marine environment is protected. In 2009 Palau became the first shark sanctuary in the world and in 2012 Unesco added Palau's Rock Islands to the World Heritage List.
We decided to rent a car in The Republic of Palau, a chain of islands in the South Pacific between the Philippines and Guam. Across from our hotel, the Palau Hotel was a rent-a-car place that was really inexpensive! $30 a day for the whole day! While Jess loves to plan out adventures, Ben enjoys spur of the moment days. We drove around the 16 states of Palau and saw a few cool spots. We stumbled upon the Etpison Museum and learned about Palauan culture and history and ended the day at the Nagadrmau Waterfall! We got a bit lost looking for the waterfall, but after a 20 minute hike found the main trail and got to play in the water. It then started to rain and we had to stomp around in the mud on the way up. Luckily we had a dry bag to protect our camera gear. All in all, it was quite an ...

Helen Reef is an atoll located about 330 mi south of its mother country, Palau in the western Pacific, and about 220 mi north of Sorong, Indonesia. It consists of a ringing reef with lagoon, a major deep-water pass, and on the north side, one tiny island of sand and a few trees. All of Helen Reef is a protected conservation area rich in marine life, in and out of the water. We were lucky to have a chance to visit this isolated area while on route to Palau from Indonesia. Some technical issues, and a forecast for bad weather coming prompted us to stop here. The friendly rangers greeted us after we were safely tied to the conservation area’s mooring. We visited the rustic ranger station on the tiny sand spit of an island. We found them pretty self-sufficient, and resourceful. The island...

SORRY THE SOUND IS PARTIALLY REMOVED. I think his is a shame that YouTube makes it hard to find out which songs are in copyright violation. This is a 30 minute, sound-synchronized movie I compiled and edited from over 40 gigs of movies and photos I shot in Palau during July-August, 2012. I stayed on the Ocean Hunter III (Fish n' Fins) with a crew of 7 and 6 other divers. All movies and photos were shot on a SeaLife 1400DC camera with strobe. The weather was primarily rainy or cloudy and it was not the classic Palaun visibility that most see (best to go during November through March). Still was awesome! I hope you enjoy it. It is a 16:9 format in HD best listened to through a stereo system or head phones. Music Credits (not in order): Israel Kamakawiwo'ole UMG-Somewhere Over The R...

Palau Travel Video - The Republic of Palau is inimitable. Most Travelists who come here like to spend their time underwater, for Palau is among the worlds most spectacular diving and snorkelling destinations. It features coral reefs, blue holes, wartime wrecks, hidden caves and tunnels, more than 60 vertical drop-offs to play with, and an astonishing spectrum of coral, fish, and rare sea creatures. There are also some outright miracles of evolution: giant clams that weigh a quarter of a ton, for example, and a lake teeming with 21 million softly pulsating, stingless jellyfish. But you dont have to get wet to enjoy Palau. On land the republic embraces Micronesias richest flora and fauna: exotic birds fly around the islands, crocodiles slip through the mangrove swamps and orchids sprout pro...

Forget about Hawaii, forget about Bali, forget your image of "paradise" because you haven't witnessed it until you've been to Palau! My family and I went on a weekend getaway to the pristine waters of, what many refer to as, the Pearl of the Pacific. In our modern and, more often than not, artificial world, it is a rarity to be able to experience a place so natural and untouched. Enjoy this video I put together of my short-lived, but very eventful trip to Palau! Song: Pumpin Blood by NONONO. No copyright infringement, all credit for the audio goes to its rightful owners!
In the wintercold I see the blood
clotting slowly in the snow
Unsung heroes cry in the night
may they die before dawn
Broken banners mourn fallen crowns
grieving swords lay all around
As the swansong touches the mountainside
unseeing eyes look at you
Can't you hear it
hear the sorrows vail
Oh, can't you see it
the newborn day
Impaled hearts welcome the end of pain
black blood releasing warrior souls
Vultures circle 'round the fields of grief
another graveyard, another tale
Can't you hear it
hear the sorrows vail
Oh, can't you see it
the newborn day
