Christopher Nolan steps back into the director's chair for this sequel to Batman Begins, which finds the titular superhero coming face to face with his greatest nemesis -- the dreaded Joker. Christian Bale returns to the role of Batman, Maggie Gyllenhaal takes over the role of Rachel Dawes (played by Katie Holmes in Batman Begins), and Brokeback Mountain star Heath Ledger dons the ghoulishly gleeful Joker makeup previously worn by Jack Nicholson and Cesar Romero. Just as it begins to appear as if Batman, Lt. James Gordon (Gary Oldman), and District Attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) are making headway in their tireless battle against the criminal element, a maniacal, wisecracking fiend plunges the streets of Gotham City into complete chaos.

The Dark Knight (film)
The Dark Knight is a 2008 superhero film directed, produced, and co-written by Christopher Nolan. Featuring the DC Comics character Batman, the film is the second part of Nolan's The Dark Knight Trilogy and a sequel to 2005's Batman Begins, starring an ensemble cast including Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Heath Ledger, Gary Oldman, Aaron Eckhart, Maggie Gylenhaal and Morgan Freeman. In the film, Bruce Wayne/Batman (Bale), James Gordon (Oldman) and Harvey Dent (Eckhart) seek to dismantle organised crime in Gotham City, and go up against a criminal mastermind known as the Joker.
Nolan's inspiration for the film was the Joker's comic book debut in 1940, the 1988 graphic novel The Killing Joke, and the 1996 series The Long Halloween, which retold Two-Face's origin. The nickname "the Dark Knight" was first applied to Batman in Batman #1 (1940), in a story written by Bill Finger.The Dark Knight was filmed primarily in Chicago, as well as in several other locations in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Hong Kong. Nolan used IMAX 70 mm film cameras to film some sequences, including the Joker's first appearance in the film. The film is dedicated to Heath Ledger, who died on January 22, 2008, some months after the completed filming and six months before the film's release, from a toxic combination of prescription drugs, leading to intense attention from the press and movie-going public. Warner Bros. initially created a viral marketing campaign for The Dark Knight, developing promotional websites and trailers highlighting screenshots of Ledger as the Joker.

Plot: This children's game show was set in a talking lift called Sam, and saw 3 child contestants play Crystal Maze style games to earn levels, to make their way up the skyscraper to the Penthouse, where they could play for the main prize. Failing a game led to the contestant(s) being dropped down the laundry chute to the basement, where the remaining contestants had to get them out before they could continue their 'quest' or being gunged from the magic stick 'o gunge! Games included amongst others, the Victorian Headmaster, a ghost who conducted a 19th Century class, with questions where the contestants give the answer to the question before. Also, a chess-like game of cat and mouse against the 'Dark Knight' and another where contestants were 'shrunk' and put in a giant kitchen, swimming around in the soup bowl, fishing out alphabet-spaghetti letters to make words.

Following the critical failure and box office disappointment of Batman & Robin (1997), Warner Bros. decided to reboot the film franchise. All three films were directed, written and produced by Christopher Nolan.
Each film in the series was a box office success, in particular the second and third films, which both earned over $1 billion worldwide. As well being considered a massive improvement over the previous series of Batman films, the trilogy has received near-universal acclaim from critics and audiences, being praised for Nolan's direction, the performances of the main cast, its thematic storytelling and depth, being more grounded in reality and darker in tone, breaking certain superhero clichés, its reinvention of the source material, focusing on Bruce Wayne as the central character, its major use of practical effects over computer generated imagery, and for being a complete story-arc. The trilogy has gained widespread recognition as being both the greatest achievement of the superhero film genre and three of the best films of all time.
