Clergy are some of the formal leaders within certain religions. The roles and functions of clergy vary in different religious traditions but these usually involve presiding over specific rituals and teaching their religion's doctrines and practices. Some of the terms used for individual clergy are cleric, clergyman, clergywoman, clergyperson, and churchman.
In Christianity the specific names and roles of clergy vary by denomination and there is a wide range of formal and informal clergy positions, including deacons, priests, bishops, preachers, pastors, and ministers. In Islam, a religious leader is often known formally or informally as an imam, mufti, mullah or ayatollah. In Jewish tradition, a religious leader is often a rabbi or hazzan (cantor).
The term ultimately comes from the Greek "κλῆρος" - klēros, "a lot", "that which is assigned by lot" (allotment) or metaphorically, "inheritance". Within Christianity, especially in Eastern Christianity and formerly in Western Roman Catholicism, the term cleric refers to any individual who has been ordained, including deacons, priests, and bishops. In Latin Roman Catholicism, the tonsure was a prerequisite for receiving any of the minor orders or major orders before the tonsure, minor orders, and the subdiaconate were abolished following the Second Vatican Council. Now, the clerical state is tied to reception of the diaconate.Minor Orders are still given in the Eastern Catholic Churches, and those who receive those orders are 'minor clerics.'

Clergy has an important role and responsibility in this movement, Min. Farrakhan explained Nov. 17 during a monthly Pastor’s Prayer Breakfast sponsored by the American Clergy Leadership Conference (ACLC). “Now Christmas is coming and many of you as pastors are preparing for Christmas. See Satan has misused the name of Jesus. We say Jesus is born on December 25, how do we honor his birth, drunk? The liquor store is happy because the pastors lead the way to the liquor store because you are going to do it in Jesus’ name,” said Min. Farrakhan as he broke down the need to reexamine what Black people have been observing for generations.

Available on iTunes (search for The Thinking Atheist under podcasts), and on BlogTalkRadio at http://www.blogtalkradio.com/thethinkingatheist/2012/01/11/the-clergy-project We talk with Dan Barker, President of the Freedom From Religion Foundation, who is part of an exciting website called The Clergy Project The Clergy Project is a confidential safe haven for active and former clergy who do not hold the supernatural beliefs of their religious traditions. It's amazing how many pastors and ministers have left their faith or seek to do so. We also speak with an atheist still in the pastorate (speaking anonymously), and with Jerry DeWitt of www.recoveringfromreligion.org
The Church, regarded as a bastion against evil, is afflicted by people perpetrating, aiding and abetting evil within its sanctuaries, parking lots and administrative offices. Individuals carrying out evil agendas are called Clergy Killers.Produced By BETRAYED TV

The Atheist Experience #780 for September 23, 2012, with Matt Dillahunty and Teresa MacBain. The Clergy Project. Teresa MacBain talks about her experience coming out as an atheist minister. Special 2 hour episode. We welcome your comments on the open blog thread for this show. ► http://freethoughtblogs.com/axp/ YouTube comments are at present disabled in our channel, to the displeasure of some. However, each video has a prominent link to the associated open thread that appears on our blog. In the past we've tried opening up the channel to comments, but we found that a very high number of episodes wound up being flooded with a combination of spam, long winded apologists, and various obscene or misogynistic comments directed at various hosts by people with an axe to grind. This seems to b...

Half an inch away
Speak before the sweat is even noticed
Such a bitter taste
I sat... the words I just can't comprehend
Ink the scriptures to my feet
The bruising swells and apathy
Sit so still with skeptic limbs...
Penetrate these veins to fill this vile with naivety
Sip and have...
A taste of my disease
And they're dragging you
Sacrament has stained
My appetite for ceremony crisis
A narrow taste for faith...
Depends on all the staleness that has formed you
Stitch the sins to my gums and teeth
A midnight mess of surgery
Speak so soft with hectic grins
Face the veil that separates
Where guilt won't die and is born again
Open aisle awaits for my two knees
And they're dragging you...
And they're dragging you...
And they're dragging you...
Hands are tied to the clergy's lies and they're dragging you...
Well hands are tied to the clergy's lies and they're dragging you...
Hands are tied to the clergy's lies and they're dragging you...
