Sea turtles get better protection in Sansha, China's southernmost city, since it established a protection station on Jinqing Island in the Xisha Islands in 2014 ... Jinqing, located in the northeastern part of the Xisha group, attracts thousands of sea turtles to lay eggs on the beach every year ... Early this year, about 70 newly hatched green sea turtles were found on the island's beaches and were taken to the protection station....

$10,000 rewards renewed for 3 unsolved Long Beach-related murder cases

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors renewed $10,000 rewards today in the unsolved murders of a Long Beach police officer shot in 1975, a man gunned down in front of a Long Beach convenience store in 2012 and a Long Beach City College football player shot in Willowbrook last summer. Supervisor Don Knabe recommended renewing two of the rewards, each set to expire this week and now available for at least another 90 days ... ....

The city of San Diego on Tuesday voted to become one of the last major cities in California with a ban on single-use plastic bags at large grocery stores, pharmacies and corner markets. Mayor Kevin Faulconer has said he will sign the ordinance — which would make the city the 150th municipality subject to a ban on disposable plastic bags that often end up in landfills or as litter in storm drains, rivers, canyons and beaches ... ....
