The Maids (French: Les Bonnes) is a play by the French dramatist Jean Genet. It was first performed at the Théâtre de l'Athénée in Paris in a production that opened on 17 April 1947, which Louis Jouvet directed. A film adaptation of the play was released in 1974. Swedish composer Peter Bengtson adapted the play in 1994 for a chamber opera.
Genet loosely based his play on the infamous sisters Christine and Léa Papin, who brutally murdered their employer and her daughter in Le Mans, France, in 1933. In an introduction written for The Maids, Jean-Paul Sartre quotes a line from Genet's novel Our Lady of the Flowers in which a character muses that if he had a play written for women he'd cast adolescent boys in the parts. Sartre then speculates on having this idea applied to The Maids. Some productions have cast men in the roles, but most have cast women.
Solange and Claire are two housemaids who construct elaborate sadomasochistic rituals when their mistress (Madame) is away. The focus of their role-playing is the murder of Madame and they take turns portraying both sides of the power divide. Their deliberate pace and devotion to detail guarantees that they always fail to actualize their fantasies by ceremoniously "killing" Madame at the ritual's dénouement.

AIR DATE: Thursday 7th July, 2014 Oscar winning actress Cate Blanchett is no stranger to strolling the red carpet in designer gowns, but for the next two weeks, she'll be on her hands and knees in an apron. After huge success in Australia, the Sydney Theatre Company's production of "The Maids" will open in New York. Lynda Kinkade has this exclusive interview.
This adaptation of Jean Genet's THE MAIDS was part of the American Film Theatre series. The film stars Glenda Jackson and Susannah York as two sisters named Solange and Claire who work as maids for their strict Madame. However, when Madame leaves the house, the two sisters dress up as their masters and take turns humiliating one another as the surrogate Madame. This masterpiece of the absurd blends Genet's acerbic existentialism with cutting surrealist humour.
Every night, in Madame's bedroom, two maids re-enact a strange ceremony. The image of Madame is materialised by a puppet around which the two maids re-play their identity and their fantasies. She is a saint
Her womb is a place of rejection
She washes her perfect skin quietly
and hates me for being real
Kill the lights and listen for noises to give you away
Sanctuary
I need a place where I can feel...
John James Hewitt (1931-1969) The Orchard: "It feels like
we're all locked up in little cages"
"The ceiling is closing in, and the walls...
The walls are closing in - Can't you feel that?"
I will turn my eyes away
I will not turn into stone
No more accusations and lies
She's spreading her self
Flesh giving way to flesh
I watch her bones
I'm being eaten alive
Remove the eyes
Remove the eyes
Remove intentions and kill the lights
Her love is a blinding line of fire to where I stand
Her love is as cold as her desire
