Hey BrainStuff, it’s Lauren. Let’s take a look at the night sky. If you’re lucky enough to have a clear view of the heavens, then you’ll see something like this: a panoply of beautiful stars twinkling away in a breathtaking assortment of colors and sizes. A few have ancient names- like Vega, or Aldebran.
But who decides what to call them? Can you name a star yourself?
Well, yes. And no. See, there’s a difference between a star’s popular name and its scientific designation. For example, Vega is the popular name of a star, but its Bayer designation is Alpha Lyr.
There are loads of groups claiming to name stars, but they are by no means created equal. You know those companies that offer to let you name a star after a loved one (or yourself, if you’re, you know, that sort of person)? Well, while it might not be fair to call them scams, it is fair to say that their names are not in any way legally binding. Nor are they, again, in any way, recognized by the astronomical community.
While these companies maintain their own databases of star names, astronomers aren’t consulting them, nor are they using these names in their work.
Today, the only group that can really name a star is the International Astronomical Union, or IAU. Since its founding in 1919, the IAU has been the ultimate authority on the names and designations of stars, along with other astronomical objects.
Star names typically come about in three ways: First, they can be inherited from an ancient language, like Greek, Latin or Arabic.
Second, they might be named after an influential astronomer, such as Barnard’s star, a red dwarf named after its discoverer.
Most stars aren’t that lucky. Instead of a proper name, they get a designation in a catalog. This means that, legally speaking, the majority of the stars above us are just known by strings of letters and numbers. You can read about 945 million of them in databases like the Guide Star Catalog or the Gliese catalog of nearby stars.
While these long strings of numbers and letters might not sound particularly romantic, they’re necessary. Think of it more like an address rather than a name. With hundreds of millions of known stars, astronomers need some way to find the star again in the course of their work. The designations show the position of a star in the heavens.
So, with all this in mind, you might wonder if cozying up to the IAU is a way to get a legit star named after you. It turns out a lot of other people have had the same idea.
Eventually, the IAU must have gotten sick of it, because they posted a statement about it on their website. In their statement, they disavow any connection to groups “selling” star-naming rights.
They also warn readers not to buy any extraterrestrial real estate – you know, lunar suburbs, a loft on Europa and so on. Which apparently people do try to buy now and then.
But there’s good news! While you can’t buy a star’s name, you can make suggestions, and even launch public naming campaigns. In 2013 the IAU released some guidelines in a piece called “Public Naming of Planets and Planetary Satellites”. Check it out for some handy tips.
For example, a proposed name has to be 16 letters or less, preferably one word, and non-offensive. (So there go half of my ideas.)
They strongly discourage people from suggesting the name of a beloved pet, or a commercial product. That makes sense, you know? The song “twinkle twinkle, little Air Jordans” doesn’t have quite the same ring to it.

VY Canis Majoris (VY CMa) is a red hypergiant star located in the constellation Canis Major. With a size of 2600 solar radii, it is the largest known star and also one of the most luminous known. It is located about 1.5 kiloparsecs (4.6×1016 km) or about 4,900 light years away from Earth. Unlike most stars, which occur in either binary or multiple star systems, VY CMa is a single star. It is categorized as a semiregular variable and has an estimated period of 6,275,081 days, or just under 17,200 years.
Antares is a red supergiant star in the Milky Way galaxy and the sixteenth brightest star in the nighttime sky (sometimes listed as fifteenth brightest, if the two brighter components of the Capella quadruple star system are counted as one star). Along with Aldebaran, Spica, and Regulus it is one of the four brightest stars near the ecliptic. Antares is a variable star, whose apparent magnitude varies from +0.9 to +1.8.
The Pistol Star is a blue hypergiant and is one of the most luminous known stars in the Milky Way Galaxy. It is one of many massive young stars in the Quintuplet cluster in the Galactic Center region. The star owes its name to the shape of the Pistol Nebula, which it illuminates. It is located approximately 25,000 light years from Earth in the direction of Sagittarius. It would be visible to the naked eye as a fourth magnitude star, if it were not for the interstellar dust that completely hides it from view in visible light.
Rigel (β Ori / β Orionis / Beta Orionis) is the brightest star in the constellation Orion and the sixth brightest star in the sky, with visual magnitude 0.18. Although it has the Bayer designation "beta", it is almost always brighter than Alpha Orionis (Betelgeuse).
Aldebaran (α Tau, α Tauri, Alpha Tauri) is an orange giant star located about 65 light years away in the zodiac constellation of Taurus. With an average apparent magnitude of 0.87 it is the brightest star in the constellation and is one of the brightest stars in the nighttime sky. The name Aldebaran is Arabic (الدبران al-dabarān) and translates literally as "the follower", presumably because this bright star appears to follow the Pleiades, or Seven Sisters star cluster in the night sky. This star is also called the Bull's Eye because of its striking orange color and its location in the bull's head shaped asterism. NASA's Pioneer 10 spacecraft, which flew by Jupiter in 1973, is currently traveling in the direction and will reach it in about two million years.
Arcturus (α Boo / α Boötis / Alpha Boötis) is the brightest star in the constellation Boötes. With a visual magnitude of −0.05, it is also the third brightest star in the night sky, after Sirius and Canopus. It is 25 times more luminous than the Sun[8] but has a significantly lower luminosity than other bright stars such as Canopus or Rigel. The system is between 200 and 300 million years old.It was originally composed of two bright bluish stars. The more massive of these, Sirius B, consumed its resources and became a red giant before shedding its outer layers and collapsing into its current state as a white dwarf around 120 million years ago.

Stellar designation
Designations of stars (and other celestial bodies) is mediated by the International Astronomical Union (IAU). Many of the star names in use today were inherited from the time before the IAU existed. Other names, mainly for variable stars (including novae and supernovae), are being added all the time.
Approximately 10,000 stars are visible to the naked eye. Pre-modern catalogues listed only the brightest of these. Hipparchus in the 2nd century BC enumerated about 850 stars. Johann Bayer in 1603 listed about twice this number. Only a minority of these have proper names; all others are designated by numbers from various catalogues. Only in the 19th century did star catalogues list the naked-eye stars exhaustively. The most voluminous modern catalogues list on the order of a billion stars, out of an estimated total of 200 to 400 billion in the Milky Way.
Proper names
Several hundred of the brightest stars have traditional names, most of which derive from Arabic, but a few from Latin.

A few have ancient names- like Vega, or Aldebran.
But who decides what to call them? Can you name a star yourself?
Well, yes. And no. See, there’s a difference between a star’s popular name and its scientific designation. For example, Vega is the popular name of a star, but its Bayer designation is Alpha Lyr.
There are loads of groups claiming to name stars, but they are by no means created equal. You know those companies that offer to let you name a star after a loved one (or yourself, if you’re, you know, that sort of person)? Well, while it might not be fair to call them scams, it is fair to say that their names are not in any way legally binding. Nor are they, again, in any way, recognized by the astronomical community.
While these companies maintain their own databases of star names, astronomers aren’t consulting them, nor are they using these names in their work.
Today, the only group that can really name a star is the International Astronomical Union, or IAU. Since its founding in 1919, the IAU has been the ultimate authority on the names and designations of stars, along with other astronomical objects.
Star names typically come about in three ways: First, they can be inherited from an ancient language, like Greek, Latin or Arabic.
Second, they might be named after an influential astronomer, such as Barnard’s star, a red dwarf named after its discoverer.
Most stars aren’t that lucky. Instead of a proper name, they get a designation in a catalog. This means that, legally speaking, the majority of the stars above us are just known by strings of letters and numbers. You can read about 945 million of them in databases like the Guide Star Catalog or the Gliese catalog of nearby stars.
While these long strings of numbers and letters might not sound particularly romantic, they’re necessary. Think of it more like an address rather than a name. With hundreds of millions of known stars, astronomers need some way to find the star again in the course of their work. The designations show the position of a star in the heavens.
So, with all this in mind, you might wonder if cozying up to the IAU is a way to get a legit star named after you. It turns out a lot of other people have had the same idea.
Eventually, the IAU must have gotten sick of it, because they posted a statement about it on their website. In their statement, they disavow any connection to groups “selling” star-naming rights.
They also warn readers not to buy any extraterrestrial real estate – you know, lunar suburbs, a loft on Europa and so on. Which apparently people do try to buy now and then.
But there’s good news! While you can’t buy a star’s name, you can make suggestions, and even launch public naming campaigns. In 2013 the IAU released some guidelines in a piece called “Public Naming of Planets and Planetary Satellites”. Check it out for some handy tips.
For example, a proposed name has to be 16 letters or less, preferably one word, and non-offensive. (So there go half of my ideas.)
They strongly discourage people from suggesting the name of a beloved pet, or a commercial product. That makes sense, you know? The song “twinkle twinkle, little Air Jordans” doesn’t have quite the same ring to it.

It is categorized as a semiregular variable and has an estimated period of 6,275,081 days, or just under 17,200 years.
Antares is a red supergiant star in the Milky Way galaxy and the sixteenth brightest star in the nighttime sky (sometimes listed as fifteenth brightest, if the two brighter components of the Capella quadruple star system are counted as one star). Along with Aldebaran, Spica, and Regulus it is one of the four brightest stars near the ecliptic. Antares is a variable star, whose apparent magnitude varies from +0.9 to +1.8.
The Pistol Star is a blue hypergiant and is one of the most luminous known stars in the Milky Way Galaxy. It is one of many massive young stars in the Quintuplet cluster in the Galactic Center region. The star owes its name to the shape of the Pistol Nebula, which it illuminates. It is located approximately 25,000 light years from Earth in the direction of Sagittarius. It would be visible to the naked eye as a fourth magnitude star, if it were not for the interstellar dust that completely hides it from view in visible light.
Rigel (β Ori / β Orionis / Beta Orionis) is the brightest star in the constellation Orion and the sixth brightest star in the sky, with visual magnitude 0.18. Although it has the Bayer designation "beta", it is almost always brighter than Alpha Orionis (Betelgeuse).
Aldebaran (α Tau, α Tauri, Alpha Tauri) is an orange giant star located about 65 light years away in the zodiac constellation of Taurus. With an average apparent magnitude of 0.87 it is the brightest star in the constellation and is one of the brightest stars in the nighttime sky. The name Aldebaran is Arabic (الدبران al-dabarān) and translates literally as "the follower", presumably because this bright star appears to follow the Pleiades, or Seven Sisters star cluster in the night sky. This star is also called the Bull's Eye because of its striking orange color and its location in the bull's head shaped asterism. NASA's Pioneer 10 spacecraft, which flew by Jupiter in 1973, is currently traveling in the direction and will reach it in about two million years.
Arcturus (α Boo / α Boötis / Alpha Boötis) is the brightest star in the constellation Boötes. With a visual magnitude of −0.05, it is also the third brightest star in the night sky, after Sirius and Canopus. It is, however, fainter than the combined light of the two main components of Alpha Centauri, which are too close together for the eye to resolve as separate sources of light, making Arcturus appear to be the fourth brightest. VY Canis Majoris (VY CMa) is a red hypergiant star located in the constellation Canis Major. With a size of 2600 solar radii, it is the largest known star and also one of the most luminous known. It is located about 1.5 kiloparsecs (4.6×1016 km) or about 4,900 light years away from Earth. Unlike most stars, which occur in either binary or multiple star systems, VY CMa is a single star. It is categorized as a semiregular variable and has an estimated period of 6,275,081 days, or just under 17,200 years.
Antares is a red supergiant star in the Milky Way galaxy and the sixteenth brightest star in the nighttime sky (sometimes listed as fifteenth brightest, if the two brighter components of the Capella quadruple star system are counted as one star). Along with Aldebaran, Spica, and Regulus it is one of the four brightest stars near the ecliptic. Antares is a variable star, whose apparent magnitude varies from +0.9 to +1.8.

Sirius is the brightest star in the night sky. With a visual apparent magnitude of −1.46, it is almost twice as bright as Canopus, the next brightest star. The name "Sirius" is derived from the Ancient Greek: Σείριος Seirios ("glowing" or "scorcher"). The star has the Bayer designation Alpha Canis Majoris (α CMa). What the naked eye perceives as a single star is actually a binary star system, consisting of a white main-sequence star of spectral type A1V, termed Sirius A, and a faint white dwarf companion of spectral type DA2, called Sirius B. The distance separating Sirius A from its companion varies between 8.2 and 31.5 AU.
Sirius appears bright because of both its intrinsic luminosity and its proximity to Earth. At a distance of 2.6 parsecs (8.6 ly), as determined by the Hipparcos astrometry satellite, the Sirius system is one of Earth's near neighbors. The 3 Stars were achieved in both isolated bypass and Aortic Valve Replacement categories. Only 12-15% of programs nationwide achieve this distinction in isolated bypass surgery, only 6% for AVR surgery, and only 2.4% received the three-star rating in both categories. Valley's Cardiac Program has now received this recognition in both 2012 and 2013.

The 402 value for the 2.5 to 4-magnitude earthquake events from Week 50 represented an anomaly not predicted by modeling from 2012-2014 weekly values earning the red designation. However, the prediction that this value would drop steadily each week to outside-orbit position is well on the way to being realized. The sharp uptick came from higher-than-expected seismic activity coming from the Oklahoma and Jamaican Quake Swarm Areas and the seismic/volcanic pressure shift associated with the tectonic plate cascade ‘away’ from the North American Crayton towards the Solomon Island Region from that plate breaking in two amid the big earthquake activity focused on February 6, 2013. These are precursor quake events connected to the two subterranean magma waves circling the northern and southern regions of the Pacific Ocean/Ring of Fire, but the activity is subsiding on schedule; as the two magma waves have reduced momentum, because Earth has been moving through this current earth change lull period where the Black Star/Earth magnetic portal connection has been lengthening to reduce Black Star/Earth electromagnetic potential causing Earth core to cool down through this period. All of that will change after the first week of February 2016 once our planet turns around in natural orbit of the Sun to begin heading towards the Libra Constellation....

Seismic, volcanic and magnetic North Pole migration indicators say Earth is moving through the final stages of the second earth change lull period for the 2015 Earth Orbit Cycle relative to the inbound Black Star now moving through the Libra Constellation just below the ecliptic plane.
Contrary to what many critics are saying, year-over-year seismicity is actually lower than last year with 5-mag quake events remaining about the same. For those wondering, the 7.1 magnitude Alaskan Quake Event (USGS info) took place on Sunday and will be posted for Week 53 once the Seismic Chart is updated next Thursday for Volume 5 of Terral’s 2016 Newsletter.
