It is a fascinating and potentially dangerous time in the history of our planet. A confluence of factors has resulted on humans reaching a point where they’ve never been more vulnerable to natural disasters. The threat of global warming has all but been confirmed as true, ushering in a steady, gradual increase in climate-related weather unrest. Additionally, disasters like earthquakes and hurricanes are taking more of a toll today as global population numbers continue to rise and people are required to spread out and take up residence in regions that push them nearer to volatile, dangerous areas.
On top of that, digital technologies have afforded us unprecedented access to all that life has to offer, including these rare, spectacular and potentially devastating disasters. Once, this was simply the work of storm chasers and other thrill-seeking risk-takers who summon the courage to run towards the storm. Now, however, just about every disaster is met with the clicking and flashing of an army of camera phones, which can both chronicle the devastation that it leaves in its wake and can be immediately uploaded online for limitless viewing.
Indeed, the internet is awash in amateur video of spectacular destruction across the globe, from torrential flooding to explosive volcanic eruptions to blazing wildfires to dramatic, terrifying earthquakes. These videos generate major views and a large audience drawn in by the shock value of some of these scenes. There’s something undeniably compelling in the inherently unsettling nature of watching unfold a sudden, brutal happening that extends well beyond the control of any individual person. The first-person perspective of the often shaky camera puts you firmly in the shoes of the video’s director, making you feel as if you are experiencing the natural disaster personally.
For all of the death and ruin that they are capable of leaving in their wake, natural disasters possess a strange beauty about them. In recent years, the term "tidal wave" has fallen out of favor, especially in the scientific community, because tsunami actually have nothing to do with tides, which are produced by the gravitational pull of the moon and sun rather than the displacement of water. The term tsunami, meaning "harbor wave" in literal translation, comes from the Japanese 津波, composed of the two kanji 津 (tsu) meaning "harbour" and 波 (nami), meaning "wave". (For the plural, one can either follow ordinary English practice and add an s, or use an invariable plural as in the Japanese.[7])
There are only a few other languages that have an equivalent native word. In Acehnese language, the words are ië beuna[8] or alôn buluëk[9] (depending on the dialect). In Tamil language, it is aazhi peralai. On Simeulue island, off the western coast of Sumatra in Indonesia, in Devayan language the word is smong, while in Sigulai language it is emong.[10]
In Singkil (in Aceh province) and surrounding, the people use the word gloro/galoro for tsunami.[11][12] In Nias language, it is called oloro/galoro[13] and in Ende it is called ae mesi nuka tana lala[14]

Start by sitting down and making a list of what worries you
It will vary greatly depending on where you live
A family living in a suburb in Huntsville, AL will have different worries than one living in a high rise in New York City
It may also depend on if you have children, pets, or those with disabilities – families have special needs that have to be met
My advice is to start preparing for likely events first
Once those are addressed, move on to less likely, but perhaps more significant threats
Once I get my list together, then what?
Assess the impacts of those threats
Once the impacts are assessed, identify actionable steps to address those impacts:

For example, if worried about food availability, might decide to stockpile nonperishables
The idea is to make a list of things you will actually do – keep it real
You use the term Stock-gyv-alist. What does it mean?
It’s just a term I coined to get people to think about three important aspects to preparedness and survival in general
Stockpiler – someone with a wide assortment of supplies, but perhaps little knowledge of how to actually do anything
MacGyver – someone who can jury rig anything with duct tape, a pencil, and a pack of chewing gum
Survivalist – someone who can find dinner in an old stump, or make a heater using toilet paper and a rusty coffee can
The goal is to become all of these to some degree
What about preparing for really big events, such as a global pandemic, asteroid strike, or EMP attack?
Let’s talk specifics about a few preparations:
Food

The five categories of disasters...
What’s the Cardinal Rule of Disaster Preparedness?
Where does a family start?

Start by sitting down and making a list of what worries you
It will vary greatly depending on where you live
A family living in a suburb in Huntsville, AL will have different worries than one living in a high rise in New York City
It may also depend on if you have children, pets, or those with disabilities – families have special needs that have to be met
My advice is to start preparing for likely events first
Once those are addressed, move on to less likely, but perhaps more significant threats
Once I get my list together, then what?
Assess the impacts of those threats
Once the impacts are assessed, identify actionable steps to address those impacts:

For example, if worried about food availability, might decide to stockpile nonperishables
The idea is to make a list of things you will actually do – keep it real
You use the term Stock-gyv-alist. What does it mean?
It’s just a term I coined to get people to think about three important aspects to preparedness and survival in general
Stockpiler – someone with a wide assortment of supplies, but perhaps little knowledge of how to actually do anything
MacGyver – someone who can jury rig anything with duct tape, a pencil, and a pack of chewing gum
Survivalist – someone who can find dinner in an old stump, or make a heater using toilet paper and a rusty coffee can
The goal is to become all of these to some degree
What about preparing for really big events, such as a global pandemic, asteroid strike, or EMP attack?

American Airlines Flight 1420 was a flight from Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport to Little Rock National Airport in USA. On June 1, 1999, a McDonnell Douglas MD-82 (registration number N215AA) overran the runway upon landing in Little Rock and crashed. The captain and ten passengers died in the crash.
The pilots of flight 1420 were Captain Richard Buschmann and First Officer Michael Origel.
According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) accident report, they learned that the winds were changing direction and that a wind shear alert had sounded on the airport due to a thunderstorm nearby. Air traffic control originally told them to expect Runway 22L for landing, but after the wind direction changed rapidly, Captain Buschmann requested a change to Runway 4R.
This accident is avoidable but due to severe pilot error and judgment, many people lost their lives including the Captain who made the fatal bad decision.

Fifty years ago, on the night of 10 October 1957, Britain was on the brink of an unprecedented nuclear tragedy. A fire ripped through the radioactive materials in the core of Windscale, Britain's first nuclear reactor. Tom Tuohy, the deputy general manager at the site, led the team faced with dealing with a nightmare no-one had thought possible.
"Mankind had never faced a situation like this; there's no-one to give you any advice," he said. Tuohy and his men were confronted by a terrifying dilemma.
If they let the fire burn out, it could spread radioactivity over a large area of Britain. But if they put water on the reactor, they risked turning it into a nuclear bomb that could kill them all.
Now tapes of the inquiry into the accident, heard for the first time in a BBC film, reveal the reasons why the politicians covered up the causes of the accident. Scientists had been warning about the dangers of an accident for some time. The safety margins of the radioactive materials inside the reactor were being further and further eroded.
"They were running much too close to the precipice," says Dr Dunworth, a senior manager in the Nuclear Research Laboratory in Harwell, Oxfordshire, who was one of those highlighting the potential dangers.
But the politicians and the military ignored the warnings; instead they increased demands on Windscale to produce material for an H-bomb.
For 50 years, the official record on the accident has been that the very men who had averted a potentially devastating accident were to blame for causing it.
"I resented it at the time," says Peter Jenkinson, who was an assistant physicist at the reactor, "and I hoped the record would be put straight." After the inquiry, he and his colleagues finally got their wish.
