Another Woman is a 1988 American drama film written and directed by Woody Allen. It stars Gena Rowlands as a philosophy professor who accidentally overhears the private analysis of a stranger, and finds the woman's regrets and despair awaken something personal in her.
Marion Post (Gena Rowlands) is a New York philosophy professor past the age of 50 on a leave of absence to write a new book. Due to construction work in their building, she sublets a furnished flat downtown to have peace and quiet.
Her work there is interrupted by voices from a neighboring office in the building where a therapist conducts his analysis. She quickly realizes that she is privy to the despairing sessions of another woman (Mia Farrow) who is disturbed by a growing feeling that her life is false and empty. Her words strike a chord in Marion, who begins to question herself in the same way.
She comes to realize that, like her father (John Houseman), she has been unfair, unkind and judgmental to many of the people closest to her: her brother Paul (Harris Yulin) and his fragile wife Lynn (Frances Conroy), her best friend from high school Claire (Sandy Dennis), her first husband Sam (Philip Bosco), and her stepdaughter Laura (Martha Plimpton).
Marion is a woman who has learned to shield herself from her emotions. She rents an apartment to work undisturbed on her new book, but by some acoustic anomaly she can hear all that is said in the next apartment in which a psychiatrist holds his office. When she hears a young woman tell that she finds it harder and harder to bear her life, Marion starts to reflect on her own life. After a series of events she comes to understand how her unemotional attitude towards the people around her affected them and herself.

Marion: I wondered if a memory is something you have or something you've lost.
Ken: I accept your condemnation.
Paul: Do you remember some years ago when I showed you something I'd written, do you remember what you said?::Marion: No, I don't remember. I was probably just trying to be truthful.::Paul: Yes, I'm sure. You said, "This is overblown, it's too emotional, it's maudlin. Your dreams may be meaningful to you, but to the objective observer, it's just so embarrassing."::Marion: I said that?::Paul: Exactly your words. So I tried not to embarrass you any more.
Marion: [reciting the poet Rilke] For here there is no place that will not see you... You must change your life.
[first lines]::Marion: [voiceover] If someone had asked me when I reached my fifties to assess my life, I would have said that I had achieved a decent measure of fulfillment, both personally and professionally. Beyond that, I would say I don't choose to delve.
[last lines]::Marion: [voiceover] I closed the book, and felt this strange mixture of wistfulness and hope, and I wondered if a memory is something you have or something you've lost. For the first time in a long time, I felt at peace.

The film's title character, Francis, lives with his invalid, abusive mother in a dingy tenement apartment, and has suffered a life of unrelenting misfortune and brutality. Over time, he has withdrawn from the world and into himself, silently observing others rather than interacting with them. His only solace has been his Catholicism, but he has begun to question his faith in a loving God who could countenance so much evil and pain. When he discovers he can see into the apartment of a beautiful, mysterious woman from his own back stairs, Francis cannot stop watching her, even after he meets her and they become romantically involved. Unable or unwilling to believe that she could actually love him, he becomes ever more obsessive in his voyeurism. And it is what Francis sees - or thinks he sees - that leads ultimately to his undoing.

Heard in Woody Allen's ANOTHER WOMAN (1988) as Gena Rowland's "Love Theme." Though not literally the same recording used in the film, it is the same Debussy-influenced interpretation of Satie's original piece.

I met a friend of mine just the other day
She was really sorry, I said: "i'm okay!"
But then she told me 'bout a boy who looked like you
On your harley-d, you were talking to:
Another woman
Another woman
I'm not the kind of girl who would take advice
I'm a self-made lady of my own device
I let the people say what the people want
But I'm asking you, are they right or wrong
Another woman
Another woman
Too many people walk out in the rain
You saved her from drowning
There's no-one to blame
And if I cry me a river
My life stays the same
Got nothing to live for
I'm losing the game
She has got the best of me, my man
Now I believe that water turns to red, red wine
I'd buy every story from you every time
You could even tell me that the world is flat
But I never thought that you would ever have
Another woman
Another woman
So I call you up because I'm missing you
I dial your number, baby
And I get right through
But then the poison arrow hits as cold as ice
Drrrrt... drrrrt... hello!
Another woman
