Fast-moving thunderstorms with strong winds and lightning are expected to hit Brisbane by Monday evening.
A line of thunderstorms over the Darling Downs were expected to hit Toowoomba in the afternoon, before moving on to Ipswich about 4pm.
Bureau of Meteorology spokesman Dean Narramore said Brisbane would be hit by 6pm.
"The biggest threat with these storms will be wind, they are very fast moving, a lot of energy with them as well, so we should see pretty gusty, windy conditions with these storms," he said.
"We will probably get a bit of a light show across many areas later this afternoon and we should see some brief heavy rain but nothing that is going to cause any issues at this stage."
Mr Narramore said the thunderstorms would move on quite quickly.
"These storms are moving around 50-70 kilometres per hour so all of a sudden these storms will hit and we will probably get 15-20 minutes of rain, wind, lightning and thunder and then next minute it will be gone," Mr Narramore said.
"There are no big gusts with the storms, but once they move through Toowoomba we should see some stronger wind gusts as they move through."
The Bureau of Meteorology issued a marine wind warning on Monday with gusts of up to 60 kilometres out over coastal waters on the Sunshine Coast, Moreton Bay and Gold Coast.
Mr Narramore said these winds were due to the storm system moving eastwards.
"Ahead of this trough, we have strong gusty northerly winds, which is what has caused the strong wind warning through our coastal waters," he said.
"We normally see that ahead of the trough, gusty northerlies, then the trough will come through and then we will get westerlies.
"Temperatures should be fairly cool overnight with those cooler, drier westerlies behind this line of storms."
Mr Narramore said Brisbane should be sunny on Tuesday.
"The focus is Darling Downs, Wide Bay, Burnett and south-east coast today then tomorrow the focus will move to Wide Bay and Capricornia and we will be sunny down here," he said.
