Society of Jesus
The Society of Jesus (Latin: Societas Iesu, S.J., SJ or SI) is a male religious congregation of the Catholic Church. The members are called Jesuits. The society is engaged in evangelization and apostolic ministry in 112 nations on six continents. Jesuits work in education (founding schools, colleges, universities and seminaries), intellectual research, and cultural pursuits. Jesuits also give retreats, minister in hospitals and parishes, and promote social justice and ecumenical dialogue.
Ignatius of Loyola founded the society after being wounded in battle and experiencing a religious conversion. He composed the Spiritual Exercises to help others follow the teachings of Jesus Christ. In 1534, Ignatius and six other young men, including Francis Xavier and Peter Faber, gathered and professed vows of poverty, chastity, and later obedience, including a special vow of obedience to the Pope in matters of mission direction and assignment. Ignatius's plan of the order's organization was approved by Pope Paul III in 1540 by a bull containing the "Formula of the Institute".

The following Cusco travel guide is our attempt to showcase what the city has to offer in terms of attractions, things to do, shopping, dining, museums and nightlife. In our opinion, you'll want to budget several days to take it all in and acclimatize to the higher altitude if you're thinking of going on hiking excursions afterwards.

If you're planning to walk the Inca Trail or visit Machu Picchu, you'll likely end up spending at least a few days in Cuzco. With it's lively square, quirky museums, artisans markets and traditional performances, this is exactly the type of destination you'll want to linger in...plus let's not forget, it's also a good place to adjust to the altitude! The following video will showcase 15 things to do in Cuzco:
Cuzco Cathedral is a place you shouldn't miss. The cathedral sits on the site of Viracocha Inca’s palace, and it was also built using blocks from the nearby Inca site of Sacsaywamán. Inside you'll find impressive works of art done in the cuzqueña style.
In the evenings, you can go watch a traditional dance performance at Centro Qosqo.
San Blas
San Blas is one of the oldest neighbourhoods in Cuzco and it is a great area to explore on foot. The neighbourhood is known for its bright blue doors and window shutters, and it has a nice little square with a church and a water fountain. The neighbourhood has some really cool lookout points with great panoramic views of Cuzco, so you'll want to bring your camera.
Plaza de Armas is the beating heart of Cuzco. The square is flanked by a Jesuit church and cathedral, and there are also plenty of bars, restaurants, and tour agencies around the perimeter. During the day you'll find locals and tourists hanging out in the square, and if you get lucky, you might just encounter a performance followed by a demonstration like we did.
The Inca Museum is one of the main museums in town and it has rooms dedicated to different periods of Inca and Spanish history. You can also see women weaving rugs and tapestries by hand in the central courtyard.
Qurikancha was an Inca temple built to the Sun God, Inti, and it is believed that the walls of this temple were once covered in sheets of gold. If the temple looks like it has various layers of construction, that's because when the Spaniards arrived, they demolished the original temple and used the foundations to build the Church of Santo Domingo on the site.
The Church of the Society of Jesus is a historic Jesuit church. It's worth a quick visit if you're in the area.
Templo de la Merced is another church located one block from Plaza de Armas, and it contains the tomb of two famous conquistadors.

Within its caldeiras, boiling hot water from over a hundred metres below penetrates the surface and creates bubbles in the mud plus sulphurous fumes. Horta is the capital of the island of Faial and since 1976 has also been the seat of the Azores’ parliament, with elegant town houses, churches and palaces. The Matriz De São Salvador Church was built by the Jesuits until, in 1759, the Order was banned by the Portuguese. Gilded carvings adorn both the main and side altars and numerous figures represent scenes from the life of Ignatius Von Loyola, founder of the Order. With their authentic nature and harmony, the Azores islands are still waiting to be discovered. Islands that hold the secrets of nature and an abundance of local pride. Evergreen jewels set amid an azure ocean!

With its pink marble façade, the Early Baroque Franciscan Church Of Mary dominates the square. The Dom Church Stolnica was built according to the design of Venetian, Andrea Pozzo in the 17th century. The interior of this Baroque church is quite overwhelming and with great attention to detail. Situated on the four hundred metre high Castle Hill, the Slovenian Acropolis was once inhabited by the Illyrians and Celts. The Roman watchtower later became both a strategic fortress and castle. A triumphal arch marks the entrance to the Žale Cemetery on the northeast edge of the city with a number of fine, richly decorated chapels. Here Jože Plečnik created a masterpiece that represented the transition from the world of the living, to the world of the dead. Columns flank the main path up to Tivoli Castle that was built by the Jesuits in the seventeenth century and soon became a summer residence of the bishops. Romantic lakes with water fowl and pretty flowers embellish the park, once the home of Field Marshal Radetzky. Ljubljana is a city of joie de vivre and pleasure where the Middle Ages, Baroque and Art Nouveau meet with the relaxed lifestyle of the south!
