Pater Nostere - The Lord's Prayer in Proto Italic
Huge thanks to Reuben J. Pitts for doing the majority of the work on this reconstruction, and to Alessio Schiano for inspiring the effort!
https://www.arts.kuleuven.be/ling/qlvl/people/pages/00107389
This is a demonstration of reconstructed proto Italic using the Lord's Prayer, a text often used for linguistic comparisons - it is of course not a historical text. This represents the reconstructed speech of Italic speakers in the late 2nd millennium BCE, and would eventually evolve into Latin and its sister languages (Umbrian, Oscan, Faliscan, etc.) The very earliest Italic attestation of Old Latin and its sister languages is from about five centuries later.

Oscan is an extinct Indo-European language of southern Italy. The language is also the namesake of the language group to which it belonged. As a member of the Italic languages, Oscan is therefore a sister language to Latin and Umbrian.
Oscan was spoken by a number of tribes, including the Samnites, the Aurunci (Ausones), and the Sidicini. The latter two tribes were often grouped under the name "Osci". The Oscan group is part of the Osco-Umbrian or Sabellic family, and includes the Oscan language and three variants (Hernican, Marrucinian and Paelignian) known only from inscriptions left by the Hernici, Marrucini and Paeligni, minor tribes of eastern central Italy. The language was spoken until approximately CE 100.

Throughout the video we'll discover what we can (and can't) say about Etruscan sounds and words. You'll glimpse bits of Etruscan consonants, vowels, grammar, syllables, accentuation and one major change in the language's history. Along the way, I'll share tales of the hopes and frustrations of the scholars who worked through these discoveries. Finally, you'll hear the reconstructed pronunciation of an Etruscan phrase, along with a likely translation, before concluding we're still far from understanding this captivating tongue.
