In geography, a linear settlement is a (normally small to medium-sized) settlement or group of buildings that is formed in a long line. Many follow a transport route, such as a road, river, or canal though some form due to physical restrictions, such coastlines, mountains, hills or valleys, as in the case of Victoria, Hong Kong. Linear settlements may have no obvious center, such as a road junction or green. Linear settlements have a long and narrow shape.
In the case of settlements built along a route, the route probably predated the settlement, and then the settlement grew up at some way station or feature, growing along the transport route. Often, it is only a single street with houses on either side of the road. Mileham, Norfolk, England is a good example of this. Later development may add side turnings and districts away from the original main street. Places such as Southport, England developed in this way.
A linear settlement is in contrast with ribbon development, which is the outward spread of an existing town along a main street.

This lecture is an example calculation of immediate, primary consolidation, and secondary consolidation settlement beneath a circular induced stress. The example includes a calculation of the time required for primary consolidation to reach 95%. Critical Questions to Consider: 1) To compute the settlement for a particular soil sublayer, why does it matter how deep below the ground surface you are and where you are located beneath the footing footprint? 2) Why did we compute the time to complete 95% primary consolidation settlement instead of the time to complete 100% primary consolidation settlement? 3) Would we see more settlement beneath the center of a circular load or beneath the edge of the load? Why?
This lecture introduces the topic of site response, which is how geotechnical engineers predict how local soil conditions will either amplify or de-amplify ground motions originating from bedrock below. We begin by introducing linear site response, which assumes that the soil is elastic linear, and its dynamic soil properties (e.g., G, vs, damping ratio) do not change with induced shear strain. The concept of a transfer function is reviewed. Transfer functions are derived for four different cases of elastic soil over bedrock.

Soil settlement is a complex and non-linear process, but predicting it can be easy with the right tools. At this webinar, we will show you how you can use our geotechnical software, Pdisp, to apply pressures and shear forces to multi-layered soils, calculating the resulting displacements and stresses. We will also show you how our structural software, GSA, works with Pdisp to calculate soil-structure interaction for pile caps, footings, and rafts (piled or otherwise), resulting in accurate deflections, bending moments and shear forces.

Around 1500 BC, the great Minoan civilization thrived on the islands of Crete and Santorin in the eastern Mediterranean. A guided tour of the legendary sites at Akrotiri, Phasestus, Ayía Triáda and Knosses culminates in a visit to the palace of Minos, famous for its mythical labyrinth. Minoans were traders, and their cultural contacts reached far beyond the island of Crete — to Egypt's Old Kingdom, to copper-bearing Cyprus, Canaan, and the Levantine coasts beyond, and to Anatolia. In late 2009, Minoan-style frescoes and other Minoan-style artifacts were discovered during excavations of the Canaanite palace at Tel Kabri, Israel, leading archaeologists to conclude that the Minoan influence was the strongest foreign influence on that Caananite city state. These are the only Minoan remains e...

Movement in the ground can have a dramatic effect on existing structures. How do you predict ground settlement due to tunneling, excavations or mining in three dimensions from inputting values to checking results? How do you assess the damage to structures and utilities? Xdisp enables engineers to define and analyse even the most complex three dimensional problems quickly. Easy to set up and use, Xdisp is relied upon by leading engineering firms around the world on some of the biggest tunneling and excavation projects. The webinar will: • Give a brief overview of Xdisp and its use in industry • Demonstrate the simplicity of setting up a file using the graphical input feature • Demonstrate how the Building and Utility damage features can be incorporated into the analysis • I...
This lecture introduces two methods that are commonly used to perform nonlinear site response of soils: equivalent linear site response, and nonlinear site response. Each method is briefly explained, and a comparison between the two methods is performed.

Early archaeological work demonstrated that a major administrative centre had been established on the Kadmeion hill during the Mycenaean palatial period (1450-1200 BC). However, excavations in the past 30 years, coupled with the study of older finds and comparative...

This lecture introduces how getoechnical engineers estimate the length of time it will take for primary consolidation to occur. The Terzaghi 1D consolidation equation is presented and used to develop isochrones, which can be used to predict the amount of excess pore water pressure at a depth of interest in the clay layer at time = t (i.e., uz), the degree of consolidation at a depth of interest in the clay layer at time = t (i.e., Uz), and the average degree of consolidation over the entire clay layer (i.e., Uavg). The coefficient of consolidation is introduced, and two methods (the logarithm of time and the square-root of time methods) are introduced to measure it from a consolidation test at particular load increment. Finally, two techniques to speed up the process of primary consolidati...

At the ISDC 2011 Awards Banquet in Huntsville, Alabama, keynote speaker Jeff Greason delivers a space policy speech imploring our national leadership to lead, urging the assembled NASA officials and workers to believe they can reinvent a better NASA, and warning that -- without a plan -- the U.S. human spaceflight program may well come to an undignified end. We urge you to watch this important speech. — MM. See more comprehensive space news coverage at: http://moonandback.com
