Iraqi Kurdistan, officially known as the Kurdistan Region (Central Kurdish: ههرێمی کوردستان, translit. Herêmî Kurdistan; Arabic: إقليم كردستان, translit. Iqlīm Kurdistān), is located in the north of Iraq and constitutes the country's only autonomous region. Bordering the Kurdish-inhabited regions of Iran to the east, Turkey to the north, and Syria to the west, it is frequently referred to as Southern Kurdistan (Central Kurdish: باشووری کوردستان; Northern Kurdish: Başûrê Kurdistanê). The region is officially governed by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), with the capital being Erbil.
Kurdistan is a parliamentary democracy with a regional assembly that consists of 111 seats.Masoud Barzani, who was initially elected as president in 2005, was re-elected in 2009. In August 2013 the parliament extended his presidency for another two years. His presidency concluded on 19 August 2015 after the political parties failed to reach an agreement over extending his presidency term. The new Iraqi constitution defines the Kurdistan Region as a federal entity of Iraq, and establishes Kurdish and Arabic as Iraq's joint official languages. The four governorates of Duhok, Hawler, Silemani, and Halabja comprise around 41,710 square kilometres (16,100 sq mi) and have a population of 8.35 million (2013 estimate). In 2014, during the 2014 Iraq Crisis, Iraqi Kurdistan's forces also took over much of the disputed territories of Northern Iraq.
Kurdistan /ˌkɜːrdɪˈstɑːn/ (Kurdish: [ˌkurdɪˈstan]; "Homeland of the Kurds or Land of the Kurds"; also formerly spelled Curdistan; ancient name: Corduene) or Greater Kurdistan, is a roughly defined geo-cultural region wherein the Kurdish people form a prominent majority population, and Kurdish culture, language, and national identity have historically been based. Kurdistan roughly encompasses the northwestern Zagros and the eastern Taurus mountain ranges.
Contemporary use of the term refers to four parts of a greater Kurdistan, which include parts of eastern and southeastern Turkey (Northern Kurdistan), northern Syria (Western Kurdistan), northern Iraq (Southern Kurdistan), and northwestern Iran (Eastern Kurdistan). Some Kurdish nationalist organizations seek to create an independent nation state of Kurdistan, consisting of some or all of the areas with Kurdish majority, while others campaign for greater Kurdish autonomy within the existing national boundaries.
Iraqi Kurdistan first gained autonomous status in a 1970 agreement with the Iraqi government, and its status was re-confirmed as an autonomous entity within the federal Iraqi republic in 2005. There is a province by the name Kurdistan in Iran; it is not self-ruled. Kurds fighting in the Syrian Civil War were able to take control of large sections of northern Syria as forces loyal to Bashar al-Assad withdrew to fight elsewhere. Having established their own government, some Kurds called for autonomy in a democratic Syria; others hoped to establish an independent Kurdistan.
The Syrian Civil War (Arabic: الحرب الأهلية السورية) is an ongoing multi-sided armed conflict with international interventions taking place in Syria. The unrest began in the early spring of 2011 within the context of the Arab Spring protests, with nationwide protests against President Bashar al-Assad's government, whose forces responded with violent crackdowns. The conflict gradually morphed from mass protests to an armed rebellion after months of military sieges. A United Nations report released in December, 2012, stated that the conflict had "become overtly sectarian in nature", between Alawite–dominated government forces, militias and other Shia groups fighting primarily against Sunni-dominated rebel groups; however both opposition and government forces denied that.
Initially, the Syrian government relied mainly on its armed forces, but since 2014 local protection units made up of volunteers known as National Defence Force have come to play a larger role, gradually becoming the primary military force of the Syrian state. From the early stages, the Syrian government received technical, financial, military and political support from Russia, Iran and Iraq. In 2013, Iran-backed Hezbollah entered the war in support of the Syrian Army. Due to foreign involvement, the conflict had been called a proxy war between the regional Sunni and Shia powers, most prominently as a proxy conflict between Saudi Arabia and Iran. In September 2015, Russia, Iraq, Iran and Syria set up a joint operation room (information centre) in Baghdad to coordinate their activity in Syria. On 30 September 2015, Russia started its own air campaign on the side and at the request of the government of Syria. The resultant proxy war between the United States and Russia led some commentators to characterise the situation as a "a proto-world war with nearly a dozen countries embroiled in two overlapping conflicts".
The Iraqi Kurds have been fighting for independence for a long time and are part of a very modern struggle in the Middle East. "There are close to 30 million Kurds spread across northern Syria, northern Iraq, southern Turkey, and western Iran. They are the largest ethnic group without a homeland in the world. In the 1990s, the Kurds in northern Iraq, with the aid of the Coalition no-fly zone, began to develop their own autonomy, in what is now known as Iraqi Kurdistan. The Kurdistan Regional Government is functionally now its own country, although it is still officially recognized as part of Iraq." The Kurds were arguably the single minority in Iraq that clearly benefited from the Iraq War. Although the alliance between Washington and Iraqi Kurdistan remains strong, there is no support from Washington for an independent Iraqi Kurdistan. Iraqi government forces, with air and ground support from the US-led coalition, launched an offensive on Monday to drive Islamic State (ISIS / Daesh / ISIL) from the northern city of Mosul, the militants’ last major stronghold in the country. Explosions could be heard on the city’s eastern front, where Kurdish fighters moved forward to take outlying villages, a Reuters correspondent said. The United States predicted Islamic State (ISIS / Daesh / ISIL) would suffer “a lasting defeat” as Iraqi forces mounted their biggest operation since the US withdrew its own troops in 2011. Some 30,000 Iraqi soldiers, Kurdish Peshmerga militia and Sunni tribal fighters were expected to take part in the offensive to drive an estimated 4,000 to 8,000 Islamic State (ISIS / Daesh / ISIL) militants from Mosul,...
President of Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdistan region, Massoud Barzani says Kurdish forces have liberated a large area during the offensive aimed at retaking the city of Mosul from Daesh terrorists. Barzani said several villages in east, north-east and south of the flashpoint city have been cleared of terrorists. The Kurdish leader called the territorial gains as a "turning point" in the war against terrorism. He hailed the cooperation between the Iraqi army and Peshmerga forces in the fight against takfiri terrorists. Barzani warned however that pushing ISIL out of Mosul would not mean the end of terrorism and violence in the country. POOL An operation to liberate the key Iraqi city of Mosul after two years of IS control begins on Sunday night, October 17. The army of Popular Mobilization Units has recently been working towards the recapture of Mosul by liberating nearby towns and cutting off supply routes to the militants, who remain in the city. Mosul is the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL) militant group's last bastion of power in Iraq, which has been under their control since June 2014. President of Iraqi Kurdistan Masoud Barzani gave a press conference close to Mosul on Monday, during which he hailed the initial success of the joint Peshmerga-Iraqi Army campaign to liberate the city from the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS; ISIS/ISIL). Barzani stated that at least "200 square kilometers have been liberated" from IS. The president went on to state that he was hopeful about the operation but also warned that this didn't mean it would "be the end of terrorism." SOT, Masoud Barzani, President of Iraqi-Kurdistan (Kurdish): "In the name of almighty God, today is a historical day. Today is a turning point in the war against terrorism. For a long time we have been working on making a plan among the military commanders of the Iraqi Army and the Peshmerga forces to defeat ISIS...

Subscribe to our channel http://bit.ly/AJSubscribe As US troops prepared to launch the invasion of Iraq there was one thing that foreign policy analysts at least were uncertain about - what would happen in Kurdistan? After years of being terrorised by Saddam Hussain and desperate to maintain a separate ethnic identity, the Kurds, some said, would take the opportunity to finally break free from Baghdad. Seven years later, Kurdistan is looking like a somewhat unlikely success story - stable, prosperous and violence free. But beneath the apparent calm, the same tensions still simmer - Kurdistan's legal status remains undetermined, the ethnic Kurds are still demanding a homeland and critics say the regional government is illegally helping itself to the nation's oil. At Al Jazeera English, we...

An award-winning Israeli documentary by Itai Anghel about the war led by Kurds against Islamic State (ISIS/ISIL) in Syria and Iraq. Kurdish freedomfighters, both female and male, from YPG, YPJ, PKK and Peshmerga are the most successful and efficient warriors against the medieval terrorists from the so called Islamic State. Kurds want to set up a liberal, feminist and direct democratic state called Kurdistan, their traditional homeland, in the Middle East. But they are currently brutally opressed and prevented by either dictatorial states like Syria and Iraq or islamist like Turkey and Iran from fulfilling their dream.
