Solomon Islands is a sovereign country consisting of six major islands and over 900 smaller islands in Oceania lying to the east of Papua New Guinea and northwest of Vanuatu and covering a land area of 28,400 square kilometres (11,000 sq mi). The country's capital, Honiara, is located on the island of Guadalcanal. The country takes its name from the Solomon Islands archipelago, which is a collection of Melanesian islands that also includes the North Solomon Islands (part of Papua New Guinea), but excludes outlying islands, such as Rennell and Bellona, and the Santa Cruz Islands.
The islands have been inhabited for thousands of years. In 1568, the Spanish navigator Álvaro de Mendaña was the first European to visit them, naming them the Islas Salomón. Britain defined its area of interest in the Solomon Islands archipelago in June 1893, when Captain Gibson R.N., of HMS Curacoa, declared the southern Solomon Islands as a British Protectorate with the proclamation of the British Solomon Islands Protectorate. During World War II, the Solomon Islands campaign (1942–1945) saw fierce fighting between the United States and the Empire of Japan, such as in the Battle of Guadalcanal.

ISABEL, SOLOMON ISLANDS — A new study led by University of Queensland researchers says that changes in global climate and the subsequent sea level rise has already led to the loss of multiple Pacific islands. The team of Australian scientists, after sifting through decades worth of historical insight from locals as well as time series aerial and satellite imagery, say that Isabel, one of the main islands of the Solomon archipelago, has already lost five of its reef islands. These islands were once densely vegetated but weren't populated, reported the Washington Post. However, another six islands on Isabel have declined in area by more than 20 percent between 1947 and 2014. Meanwhile, residents of the island of Nuatambu have been forced to relocate to the nearby main island of Choiseul b...

Tuna is consumed all over the world. But experts believe that certain species, such as the popular bluefin tuna - are being fished to the brink of extinction. This would be disastrous to those who depend on tuna fishing for their livelihoods. In the Solomon Islands, for example, tuna is one of the main earners. But if future generations are to continue making a living from fishing, a lot has to change. Despite sometimes feeling like a million miles from the busy financial centres of the world, households in the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu are directly affected by events that happen a long way from their islands. This DVD documents some of the key findings from research into the effects of economic shocks such as recent hikes in the prices of food and fuel as well as the Global Economic Crisis (GEC). It finds that there are a number of local factors that provide households with an important buffer from shocks, and which sets them apart from people in other countries. These include food gardens and strong systems of community support. However, despite these buffers, households were still negatively affected by the shocks. Women, in particular, were affected by these shocks as they typicall...

Economic inequality is said to impact social cohesion, hamper efforts to reduce poverty and limit economic growth. And it can mean enclaves of exclusion. Silas's village sits in a cove on the Weather Coast of Guadalcanal. Surrounded by steep volcanic mountains to the rear, and rough, often impassable seas to the front, the small village is similar to many other remote communities throughout the Solomon Islands. Diarrhoea, malaria, chest infections and skin diseases are rife in many of these villages. These high levels of illnesses predominantly result from the communities' use of open water sources, often contaminated by animals or by the villagers themselves, and a lack of understanding around basic hygiene practices and health. To help tackle these ongoing health problems, Solomon Islands Red Cross developed a community-based health program, with support from Australian Red Cross and funding from the Australian Government's overseas aid...

In July 2011 a mate and I travelled to the remote Solomon Islands for 2 weeks of diving, fishing and laying about in the sun. The majority of the trip was spent in the Western Province, a small collection of islands to the west of Guadalcanal. We also stayed in Honiara for a couple of days. The islands are an amazing place to explore, with remote beaches, incredible diving, hot hot tropical sun, great fishing and friendly locals. I hope you like the video; it's kind of a summary of the trip. If anyone has questions about travelling to the Solomon's send me a message, I'd be happy to share my knowledge.
