Symphony No. 7 in A major (Opus 92) is a composition reflecting Beethoven's unparalleled wisdom. Beethoven began writing Symphony No. 7 in 1811 and completed it in 1812. He took his time to create something totally amazing, and this remains one of the best music ever written. This is the moment when we identify a modern stage in the composer's creation, where classical elements intertwine with romantic ones, thus generating a new expression far more intimate and more complex.
Movement I (Vivace)
The first movement starts with a long, expanded introduction marked "poco sustention", showing a solemn and majestic character. On the rhythmical background we hear the fine motif. This first part brings many new elements, easy to decipher, because the composer achieved perfection through sound. Here, we see Beethoven's distinctive use of rhythm and pioneering sense of key relationships.
Movement II (Allegretto)
The second movement is perhaps the most expressive part of this symphony. This movement was encored at the premiere and has remained popular since. It begins with the main melody played by the violas and cellos. The melody is then played by the second violins while the violas and cellos play a different melody which is equally important, described by George Grover as "a string of beauties hand-in-hand". While in the first movement the A major sonorities conferred greatness and sumptuousness, the theme in Movement II, in A minor, brings a whole new atmosphere, thus emphasizing the contrast between the two.
Movement III (Presto)
The third movement represents a splendid triumph in rendering the scherzo form. As a whole, it conveys a genuine bucolic scene with pictorial meanings and associations. With this (meno presto assai) in trio, the composer uses a theme from an Austrian folkloric song, the theme of which had been jotted down while Beethoven was in Teplitz.
Movement IV (Allegro)
The fourth movement emanates an immense joy from beginning to the end (allegro con brio). It is a whole series of images, full of energy and pleasure of life. This last movement is in sonata form, the coda of which contains an example of the dynamic marking ƒƒƒ (called forte fortissimo or fortississimo). Listening to this symphony's grand finale one can hardly decide what to think more astonishing: Beethoven's amazing creative fantasy, the impeccable form, the amazing talent in using all the musical resources in developing the themes, or his compact, luscious, sumptuous instrumentation.

Symphony No. 7 (Henze)
The Seventh Symphony by the German composer Hans Werner Henze was written in 1983-84. It was commissioned by the Berliner Philharmoniker as part of the orchestra's centenary celebrations in 1982.
Unlike its immediate predecessors, Henze has stated that this work is very much a 'German' symphony, in the Beethovenian tradition. Accordingly, it is cast in four movements and is broadly analogous to the 'classical' form: Introduction, slow movement, Scherzo and Finale. However Henze uses even more traditional German motifs across the movements: an allemande (a German dance) in the first and Liedform in the second. For the two final movements he focuses on the eighteenth-century poet Friedrich Hölderlin, incarcerated at Tübingen where he was subjected to what amounted to torture in the name of medical intervention. The final movement is a deeply lyrical orchestral setting of Hölderlin's late poem Hälfte des Lebens (Half of Life).
Performances
The premiere was given by the Berliner Philharmoniker under Gianluigi Gelmetti in 1984. In that performance the work took 46 minutes. Sir Simon Rattle's 1992 recording takes 38 minutes, and Marek Janowski's 2007 recording slightly under 35.

Symphony No. 7 in A major (Opus 92) is a composition reflecting Beethoven's unparalleled wisdom. Beethoven began writing Symphony No. 7 in 1811 and completed it in 1812. He took his time to create something totally amazing, and this remains one of the best music ever written. This is the moment when we identify a modern stage in the composer's creation, where classical elements intertwine with romantic ones, thus generating a new expression far more intimate and more complex.
Movement I (Vivace)
The first movement starts with a long, expanded introduction marked "poco sustention", showing a solemn and majestic character. On the rhythmical background we hear the fine motif. It is impossible to deny the overwhelming impact Shostakovich's Symphony No. 7 had on its listeners in 1942: The Leningrad première was performed by the surviving musicians of the Leningrad Radio Orchestra, supplemented with military performers. Most of the musicians were starving, which made rehearsing difficult: musicians frequently collapsed during rehearsals, and three died. The orchestra was able to play the symphony all the way through only once before the concert. Shostakovich was not present at the première, because he had been evacuated. Even so, the performance received an hour-long standing ovation.
Written by Shostakovich after he had been transported out of his besieged hometown of Leningrad, the Seventh is a patriotic hymn to his city and country and a rallying cry to the foes of fascism. Initially dedicated to the life and deeds of Vladimir Lenin, Shostakovich decided instead to dedicate the symphony to the city of Leningrad on its completion in December 1941.
Its premiere in the U.S.S.R. was world news, and the securing its first performance rights in the West was contested by Toscanini, Stokowski, and Koussevitzky. Toscanini won, and the work was rapturously received and repeatedly performed. But even before the war had ended, the exalted position of the "Leningrad" Symphony had slipped, and commentators in the West derided it as pompous and prosaic. The symphony, rehabilitated from being a patriotic piece to being a subversive piece based on the purported testimony of Shostakovich, only later received regular performances in the West. The truth is that Shostakovich's Seventh is an enormous piece for a gargantuan orchestra set in four vast movements lasting more than 70-80 minutes in performances.
- Its opening Allegretto, about half an hour in length, has proud and determined C major themes at its start and close, and a central section that takes a theme from Offenbach and turns it into a massive ostinato that overwhelms the C major themes with its brutal banality.
