The Navajo (Navajo: Diné or Naabeehó) are a Native American people of the Southwestern United States. They are the second largest federally recognized tribe in the United States with 300,460 enrolled tribal members as of 2015. The Navajo Nation constitutes an independent governmental body that manages the Navajo reservation in the Four Corners area, including over 27,000 square miles of land in Arizona, Utah, and New Mexico. The Navajo language is spoken throughout the region with most Navajo speaking English as well.
The states with the largest Navajo populations are Arizona (140,263) and New Mexico (108,306). Over three-quarters of the Navajo population reside in these two states.
Until contact with Pueblos and the Spanish, the Navajo were largely hunters and gatherers. The tribe adopted crop farming techniques from the Pueblo peoples, growing mainly corn, beans, and squash. When the Spanish arrived, the Navajo began herding sheep and goats as a main source of trade and food, with meat becoming an essential component of the Navajo diet. Sheep also became a form of currency and status symbol among the Navajo based on the overall quantity of herds a family maintained. In addition, the practice of spinning and weaving wool into blankets and clothing became common and eventually developed into a form of highly valued artistic expression.

They call themselves Diné, which means The People. To the rest of the world they are known as Navajo. Creation stories tell of struggle and evolution through three spiritual worlds, and finally emergence into this world and their present homeland, Dinetah. A homeland defined by four scared mountains; Mt. Blanca in central Colorado, Mt. Taylor in New Mexico, the San Francisco Peaks in Arizona, and Mt. Hesperus in southwestern Colorado. It is an area covering 25,000 square miles and the largest reservation in the United States. Its landscape includes national treasures such as Monument Valley and Canyon de Chelly.
In this corner of the Navajo Nation, just 100 miles west of Albuquerque, N.M., an estimated 40 percent of residents don't have access to running water. Their savior is Darlene Arviso, born and raised on the Reservation, who drives her precious cargo - a tanker truck filled with water - to make monthly deliveries to 250 families. Lee Cowan reports.
The language of the Navajo tribe helped win World War II. Now, some 70 years later, a movie studio is part of an effort to keep the Navajo language alive - enlisting the help of a friendly little fish. Jim Axelrod reports.

There's a resource curse on the Navajo Nation. The 27,000-square-mile reservation straddling parts of Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah has an extremely high abundance of many energy resources — particularly coal. That coal is what's burned to provide much of the Southwest with electricity, and it creates jobs for the Navajo. But the mining and burning have also caused environmental degradation, serious health issues, and displacement. VICE News travels to the Navajo Nation to find out how its abundance of coal is affecting the future of the Navajo people. Travel video about destination Monument Valley in the United States of America. Monument Valley is situated on the border of the North American states of Arizona and Utah in a region of magnificent freestanding sandstone rocks that tower 1000 feet above the desert.More than 200 million years ago the area was covered by ocean on the bed of which were deep deposits of mud which turned into slate and as the sea bed rose again the water drained away and cracks and fissures were formed and a vast sandstone plain was created. In the heart of the Navajo Reservation, with its magical rock formations which in the evening sun glow a burning, indelible red, it’s easy to understand why Nature played such an important part in the lives of its native inhabitants. A sacred atmosphere can be felt everywhe...
Navajo County Nation, of Arizona. USA. Visitors who are travelling to visit Upper or lower Antelope Canyon, must use the guided tour operated by the Navajo organised tours. Most of the tours need to be organised in advanced. After the Tour I wanted to share my thoughts with the respectable people of the Navajo Land.

Arizona, land of cowboys and Indians and Wild West towns plus, among its many natural wonders, the all pervasive colour red as displayed by the awe-inspiring rock formations of its mighty canyons.A thousand years ago the highly-cultured Anasazi and Hohokam Indians lived here, planting maize and vegetables in the meagre valleys and building walled towns into the cliffs of the canyons. They used the natural environment, protected caves in natural rock walls, which were accessible only by simple wooden ladders. For the past century, scientists from all over the world have investigated evidence that a gigantic meteorite crashed here, leaving behind it a huge crater: Met...

Track 8 'Cleft In The Sky' by R. Carlos Nakai from the 1998 album The Rough Guide To Native American Music. Of Navajo-Ute heritage, R. Carlos Nakai is the world's premier performer of the Native American flute. Originally trained in classical trumpet and music theory, Nakai was given a traditional cedar wood flute as a gift and challenged to see what he could do with it. Since 1983, he has released over 35 albums on the Canyon label. In addition to his solo appearances throughout the United States, Europe, and Japan, Nakai has worked with guitarist William Eaton, flutist Paul Horn, composers James DeMars and Phillip Glass and various symphony orchestras. While well-grounded in the traditional uses of the flute, Nakai has explored new musical settings including new age, world-beat jazz an...

Canyon de Chelly (pronounced "de Shay") is in Arizona in the Navajo Nation. To go into the canyon you must go with a Navaio guide. Thank you Edwina for sharing your people's culture and history. Reflecting one of the longest continuously inhabited landscapes of North America, it preserves ruins of the early indigenous tribes that lived in the area, including the Ancient Pueblo Peoples (also called Anasazi) and Navajo. I fell in love with a little Indian girl
And she stole my heart away
She took me to a pow-wow way out on the plains
And runs with bears, danced and brought the rains
I listened to the stories all through the night
Through the haze of that peace pipe
The night grew long so i found a tee pee
And you can bet I brought that squall girl with me
Could be Cherokee, Inuit, Etowah, Navajo,
Sioux, Creek, Apache, Seminole bravo
Tomahawk, arrow, any way the wind blow
It's just fine with me
Buffalo, wolfpack, rawhide knapsack
Arrowhead, mohawk, other tribe to attack
Take my wife back to that land with me
All I gotta do is take that love to the floor
