Plot: North of the Arctic circle, on the ancestral lands of the indigenous sami people: Kiruna, a small community built around an iron ore mine - a mine that is its throbbing heart and main economic activity, feeding but also gradually destroying the ground. Here, a group of youngsters are about to take the leap in the adult age, while the ground literally trembles under their feet. From the winter cold to summer greenery, they will fight with themselves and the world around them, learning to live, love and dream - while the city also is in a time of change, forced to move elsewhere due to the explosions mining the ground.

Plot: Dr. Sam Frizzell lives alone with his eighteen year old daughter Ariel Frizzell in the upper middle class Kitsilano neighborhood of Vancouver. Sam has dated little since his wife died when Ariel was a young child, he instead focusing his attentions on his daughter. With the exception of sex, Ariel has almost become a surrogate wife for Sam. Ariel, on the other hand, has taken that role one step further, she who has an Electra complex. Mary's already tenuous dating life takes a step backward when Ariel is openly hostile toward Mary over dinner, with the evening ending with Ariel physically assaulting Mary. The assault does not sit well with Julie, Mary's sister who works as a topless boxer in a local bar. Like Ariel, Julie has anger issues stemming from her growing up period, with the boxing ring being what she believes her controlled her anger management outlet. Julie does whatever she feels she needs to both to get justice for her sister and to ensure that Mary is happy in whatever relationship she decides to embark.

Plot: An Air Force nurse about to leave the service is badly disfigured about her face in a car accident in which she also loses her baby. Her husband cannot deal with her disfigurement and she goes through a depression wondering why she was kept alive. The drunk driver who ploughed into her car is let off with a very lenient punishment, too. A doctor at the hospital sees potential in reconstructing this nurse's face. This doctor extends her enlistment so this nurse will be eligible for medical treatment covered by the armed forces over the entire course of the reconstructive surgeries. In the course of the reconstruction, the doctor and the nurse must overcome several obstacles. These range from the personal, where the nurse wonders if the doctor is only doing this for his own fame, to the bureaucracy, which has problems with the use of labial tissue from the vaginal area to reconstruct the nurse's lips. All through her treatment the nurse continues her duties at the hospital when she is well enough to work. She befriends a blinded patient while her jaws are wired shut. She is so afraid that he will not like her when he regains he sight. He does not and thanks his "Silent Angel" for the care she has given him. This boosts her morale greatly. In the end the nurse makes a full recovery. When her enlistment ends she joins the doctor in the private practice he has set up after leaving the Air Force. They marry.
