A 35-year-old Yanchep man has been charged with two counts of murder over the deaths of his children, aged three and five.

The bodies of the children were discovered by officers who forced their way into the home on Flight Vista in Yanchep, in Perth's north about 10:30pm on Thursday.

Police have declined to say what led them to the house, and said the events prior to the children's deaths were forming part of their investigation.

Jason Craig Headland is under police guard in hospital in a serious but stable condition with self-inflicted wounds.

His lawyer appeared in Perth Magistrates' Court and said his client could only give "one word answers".

The magistrate said it was impractical to establish an audio link or for the court to go to the hospital.

He is scheduled to appear in the Stirling Garden Magistrates Court on November the 30.

Detective Inspector Peter Clements said the mother of the children was distraught.

"We have a family liaison officer who has been appointed. We are in direct contact with her now," he said.

"Obviously [she is] very, very distressed so we are doing what we can at this point in time to provide support, not only to her but to the police officers who attended."
