No GV support No Google voice integration so I hate it already. Not going to set this up on a prepaid number so it's DOA for me. Just bring back GTalk already and integrate it into Android so we finally have something that looks and sounds like iMessage. That's what most people want and this is just another messenger that people are going to bug family and friends to adopt. It was hard enough to convince people to start using hangouts and now there is a new one.

It's an "Okay" app right now. Lacks a lot of features. Let's hope for the best in the future updates. I expected Google Allo to be the best messaging app around but nope. There is no file-sharing feature, no cloud-sync, no support for multiple devices. Next, calling others over the internet is not available which should have been available at the time of releasing this app. The two attractions of the app are Google Assistant which is really handy and the smart reply feature which is very useful. I expected a lot more than this. And, this app should have been exclusive for Android users.

The app had amazing features but still needs work The messaging features are great, but the integration with sms is non-existent. Many people use sms only, and a good integration with sms would encourage many more users to try the app. An iMessage style integration would be perfect. There is no quick reply from the notification(where you can type a full message) as there is for most messaging apps, such as Google messenger or hangouts. There is also not good support for Android wear, which should allow you to read through your chats and reply to messages.
Has potential , but needs to grow. As a first launch, this app is amazing. With WhatsApp breaking it's promise of never having ads or selling your information and Telegram growing stagnant in development, Allo has the potential to be an amazing app. It just needs better stickers (like Telegram) and a desktop application as well as better Wear support to catch up with the others. I also would like to see SMS integration as well. Right now, there's nothing that sets Allo apart from every other messaging app out there.

Decent messging app It's one of the better messaging apps so far. But more things need to be added/changed. Theres no option to send multiple files at once, as well as no option to change your background picture. Also please add a feature so we can edit messages after we send them. Otherwise, telegram is better than this. WE THE PEOPLE EXPECT BETTER FROM ONE OF THE MOST POWERFUL COMPANIES IN THE WORLD!

An interesting start Has a lot of potential. Nice, clean ui. The Google assistant integration is great, have had a lot of fun just talking to the assistant! It's pretty annoying that videos don't play directly in the chat, its 2016 guys! The lack of SMS integration is the killer for me though, once this has been implemented, I shall certainly check it out again and will update the rating accordingly!

SMS Uninstalled. The strange SMS feature boggles me. Why can I not set Allo as my default SMS app when it is linked to my phone number? How are people going to convince everyone on their contact list to switch? Those users will also have to convince THEIR contacts to switch and so on. 5 stars if it wasn't for this goofy restriction that requires me to have 2 apps to communicate via text if I want to use Allo .
Good It's really good and fun to use however it definitely isn't in the same ballpark as iMessage. The only two things I would change are... I would like to see the user have more control over privacy ie which messages are stored by Google and the ability to delete items on demand. And the second thing would be seamless integration of sms messaging. If it had those two things this app would blow iMessage out of the water.
Has potential but not usable yet If you only talk to other Android user that have this app installed and you ONLY use this app to converse then it's an nice upgrade from others apps, that is until you go to leave it and realize you have to de register. With all that said, I won't be using this app as it is terrible if you are texting an apple user or someone who doesn't want the allo app. Additionally hangouts has more communication options for Android to android. This app has potential but I award Google no points for this one.
Great potential, needs SMS integration Google is onto something with Allo, but it's not ready for prime time. If you want to see wide-scale adoption (cross platform!), You NEED to implement native SMS support like Hangouts. Also desperately needed: a desktop and tablet client. Linking to phone number is a good idea, but you should also be able to sign in with Google account on tablets / PCs to message from there.
Cool Features, that no one will use It works a lot like Messenger, but with a few bonus features. Google assistant can be useful, the auto responses are accurate. The problem is that there is no one to use it with. Because there is no SMS support, the only reason I would use this app is to chat with the 1 person in my contacts who uses the app. And the features really aren't enough for me to try to pull all my friends off of Facebook messenger, which has multiplatform support I might add, or converting my friends over from SMS.
Pretty good...but One of the best messaging apps I've used, Google assistance is really neat. I only have a few issues though, the app often lags a bit, and it drains your battery. SMS capability would be useful, right now you're not able to set Allo as your default sms app. It could use more colors, perhaps a dark mode. I know the app is still new, and Google assistance is still in beta, so I have high hopes for this app in future updates :) keep up the good work!
few improvements n it can beat any existing msngr make the UI a bit better - no white background, make the panel displaying name/grpName opaque and fill color, the chat msgs colors should b light, spacing b/w msgs should b lessened so tht user can view more msgs in a frame. Adhoc changes- allow multiple msg selection, voice calling.hope it helps
A lot more fun that it looks. At first glance, just another chat app. But the google assistant IS really great. I will mirror what everyone is saying. PLEASE true SMS support. I want to use it as a single app. Not have to have two. It's hard enough to try to get people to switch. Also, one personal request, an option to press enter to send. Really though, great job so far guys, but I was more options and features, don't stop working on it.
Skeptical at first, better once you realize the potential I was skeptical at first. I didn't really see the big difference between hangouts and Allo. But after using it for a day or two, I'm starting to realize how awesome this app is. The integration with the Google Assistant is so helpful (try typing @google in any chat thread). The voice message thing is great for answering in the car. Excited to see more features, esp with the Google Assistant
Missing the ability to use from more than one device such as my tablet or desktop. Can't use without SMS number tied try account. @google is the only assistant so far. No @notifications for users. Can't edit messages after they're sent. Won't upload images from links like imgur. No Wear integration. Incognito chats are not in the same chat but are a new chat. Doesn't offer anything new that isn't already done by the main competitor. On the positive side we can at least remove people from group hangouts. SMS fallback is nice but not worth it for being tied to one device.

Hi Thomas. Thanks for your review! We'll pass this along to the Allo team so we can keep making Allo even better. Happy messaging and thanks again! Pretty amazing Very lightweight and beautifier designed! Very impressive feat, considering users' capabilities and the assistant. I absolutely love it. Please make it SMS handleable, it's annoying to receive SMS in one app and send in another. Edit: end to end encryption is mandatory. Also mssaging is somehow, sometimes faster then SMS, so ideal should be to integrate SMS and internet seamlessly. Otherwise, many people will ask themselves "Why use yet another SMS app if WhatsApp works fine and with end to end encryption."
Very good app but lacks spark when compared to Hike /WhatsApp Promising initiative by Google, lacks features :1. Any file sharing like word, pdf etc. 2. Lacks sticker suggestion, should suggest sticker while rolling over words like Hike. 3. Needs to be lighter yet more colorful. Google Assistant is best part of the app, please improve other things and will be ready to beat any messaging app on play store.
I love it but... I want to use this app for all my messaging and texting. I love its design, the assistant is very cool and useful but...It's missing basic features that keep it from making it my go-to app. No SMS support being one. When I texted friends who didn't have Allo, they didn't even know it was me. They apparently got some random number with Google written in front of it. No option to make it the default messaging app either. It's a beautiful app that desperately needs these features and had so much potential.
I really wanted to like this. but... Here we go again, having to convince all the people that I have spent the last couple years to accept Hangouts, that now they need to install yet another app just to send texts. No PC support, only works on the phone, is a major minus. The Google assistant is really nice, and will probably be great in a couple more years . If that's what Google is trying to push, then why not make that a separate app? I have uninstalled, and will not be changing over to Allo or Duo. Epic Fail!
I am torn on this... So I like the idea but here is the main issue. Not only is this proprietary like hang outs was it doesn't support SMS and MMS like hang outs and many other apps do. The assistant feature is cool but not enough to over take the popularity of the current platforms. What people really want is a unified communication platform one app that is well done for everything. Not another one trick pony that will only work if everyone decides to switch. That being said the assistant is really cool.
Huuuuge Potential I've been waiting for Allo since they announced at Google I/O 16. In my mind, and I'm pretty sure in many people's minds as well, this was going to be the iMessage killer. Well... It turns out it's one more instant messenger app just like What'sApp, Telegram, WeChat and many others. Very disappointed. Hey Google, for what it's worth, you guys are amazing in what you do, you just need a better guidance to create more meaningful and useful apps. Again Allo needs to send and receive SMS and a webapp as well.
Close I'm all for the Allo push, but I think there should be more strategy behind sending SMS. When people receive messages from me they're weirded out by all of the "DOWNLOAD NOW" stuff. Also, the sooner this could pick up a desktop client, the better. Outside of that, love the features. It's enjoyable with my close circle of friends who have been willing to try something new.
Could be fantastic if fully integrated SMS support. Current SMS implementation as atrocious and if i cant' make this my default messaging app there's no reason to have it. Assistant is great, but having it as a chatbot in Allo isn't enough of a benefit to make me go through the inconvenience of having this in addition to Messenger. Merge this and Messenger into 1 app, then you have something really interesting that could compete with WhatsApp, etc.
What's the point? This offers nothing that we don't already have, and does worse even at that. No SMS integration, assistant is extremely lackluster and requires extensive permissions that it absolutely doesn't need to actually function. No themes, so those of us with sensitive eyes only have stark white to deal with. Literally every other popular data messaging service is better right now.

I was expecting more honestly. I have been waiting for this app for months! And after using it for just a few hrs i realized some major downfalls. The first one being that you can not set the app as your default messaging app!!! And the second being that unless the person texting you also has allo there texts come in to your default messaging app. But if you are somehow able to get everyone you know to get the app and have them only use that one, then it would be amazing! The ui is clean perfect!!
The future Android SMS app! This is what Google messenger should have been. Great, fluid app that's still needs some polish. With better SMS integration, it could rival that of iMessage on iOS. I really think that they could kill off Hangouts and Messenger and just use this as the default messaging app. Obviously they would have to offer desktop support, but that could be done. Maybe with enough feedback, they would consider it 😎
It is OK... Want SMS integration, need to give ability to make default, ability to use Allo on a computer, ability to save picture if drawn on before sending, and force everyone to ditch their messaging app made by the manufacturer and force them to Allo. If you want to be as good or better than iOS messenger you need to deliver same functions or go beyond. Granted when I saw iOS messenger with their whisper/shout function I cringed a little. 4 stars may be a little generous but I just want more from this app.
No SMS intergration, even though Google said Allo would have it? I LIKE this app. I WANT to use this app. I WANT my friends to use it. But cmon, Google, no SMS integration is shooting yourself in the foot. Right now I am trying to get my wife to adopt it. Collaborating with Google Assistant is awesome and has so much potential. However, because SMS isn't integrated, I predict both her and I will eventually forget about this app, and default back to Messenger, since that is where the majority of my conversations are happening.
I don't understand Is Google just bored? You have Hangouts: Video calling, instant data messaging, data calling, and SMS (big note on sms). A jack of all trades could have just added Google assistant, and the fancy new features of allo and maybe even the theme of allo to Hangouts and call it a day. You have duo ? Could have just added duo to Hangouts improving the video calling. You have messenger? Could have just made SMS support on Hangouts better? At least give us SMS support on allo for us average Joe's!! Please 😒
You guys know better Google, you know better. You know that we wanted SMS integration. You know that multiple device support is what keeps hangouts from being obsolete. You guys know! Yet, ALL OF the things that justified me training friends and family to use Hangouts were REMOVED! I want to like this app. It's clean, it's fun, and the Google Assistant works in the coolest possible way. Unless we start taking SMS seriously in this app, I'm not quite sure I'll be ever be able to use it regularly.
Everything is great except it lacks call facility. I'm almost impressed by the new innovative features that Allo has but there should have been atleast a VoIP service. Or Allo could have been integrated with Google Duo. I don't think we need to have two separate Google apps to do the job. As of now I'll be sticking with Google hangouts until Google Allo gets a VoIP service. I'll give a 3/5 for now. Thanks 😊
Best App from Google however need some work Its a best ever messenger from google. Now i dont need to go to different apps for searching things. But it needs little improvement as it is in starting stage. Below are the things which should be taken care of 1. There is no last seen in Chat. 2. Most of the Messenger apps has voice calling feature, it is lacking. 3. Themes make chats wonderful so need personalized themes for chat. 4. Group Calling Feature. 5. Integrate Duo with Allo for video calls and your app will be awesome. Thanks
No desktop/web app, no SMS, no multiple devices.. no reason to use it over hangouts. This is key functionality and pretty terrible when missing from something that is supposedly a next gen messaging app. Can't use it as I need the desktop environment when at work or home. Mobile is for when I am mobile... Also, why not have the stickers from hangouts here? There are some good stickers in Allo, but you know they are missing allot of key situations, especially for people in colder countries. The hangouts stickers where broader and easier to convey a message.
Great Works exceptionally well along with Google assistant, the only issue I've run into is I can't set this as the default messenger and I really want it to be the default. Will change to 5 once this is updated. Update: so when I was texting people using allo it texted them from a different number, not my actual number this is a large issue for them because they are used to getting it from my number instead of that one. Love it but until this is fixed it gets a 3 star.
I'm still in awe! Google Assistant is insane! It's suggestions, inbuilt games, jokes, riddles are awesome. Other than that, it's still a standard messaging app. Other features need to be included. Things like file sharing, last seen tags, GIF support and most importantly, multiple device support are still missing. Data backup and transfer while switching numbers is another important feature that should be incorporated. It's a start. But yeah, I must say, it's a great start. Good going Google!
Fair Enough But Its Just Good App not obviously great.. It just provide messaging with other people and group. Thats all?? Come on google u must improve it. Add some privacy option let us update status and yeah all great app like hike supports calling. I should say HIKE is best among all the other apps.. Even So Much Smooth and Faster Than Any. I must admit Allo is also smooth and fast but not like hike
Lack of SMS is a severe gap I like the ux and ui for allo. But I'm really missing the purpose behind the app if not everyone uses it and it's 'just another messaging app'. I would find the app incredibly useful if I were able send text messages and use Google assistant in the same app. And not have to switch between apps anytime I do something as frequent as sending a text. I'll probably end up using this app with a few select people but I don't see myself using it as often as I would have liked due the lack of sms capability.
Very intuitive and works across Apple and Android devices. There's some room for growth as I'd prefer not to hop in and out of messaging applications (SMS vs this). The assistant works surprisingly well, and I find it much more useful and personal that Google Now ever was. however, it appears I cannot link a Google Apps account to the assistant. That last component should already be a permission within the Google Admin console as to whether permission should be allowed or not. Other than those small gripes, it works great and is a ton of fun to use!
