Mali (i/ˈmɑːli/; French: [maˈli]), officially the Republic of Mali (French: République du Mali), is a landlocked country in West Africa. Mali is the eighth-largest country in Africa, with an area of just over 1,240,000 square kilometres (480,000 sq mi). The population of Mali is 14.5 million. Its capital is Bamako. Mali consists of eight regions and its borders on the north reach deep into the middle of the Sahara Desert, while the country's southern part, where the majority of inhabitants live, features the Niger and Senegal rivers. The country's economy centers on agriculture and fishing. Some of Mali's prominent natural resources include gold, being the third largest producer of gold in the African continent, and salt. About half the population lives below the international poverty line of $1.25 (U.S.) a day. A majority of the population (55%) are non-denominational Muslims.
Present-day Mali was once part of three West African empires that controlled trans-Saharan trade: the Ghana Empire, the Mali Empire (for which Mali is named), and the Songhai Empire. During its golden age, there was a flourishing of mathematics, astronomy, literature, and art. At its peak in 1300, the Mali Empire covered an area about twice the size of modern-day France and stretched to the west coast of Africa. In the late 19th century, during the Scramble for Africa, France seized control of Mali, making it a part of French Sudan. French Sudan (then known as the Sudanese Republic) joined with Senegal in 1959, achieving independence in 1960 as the Mali Federation. Shortly thereafter, following Senegal's withdrawal from the federation, the Sudanese Republic declared itself the independent Republic of Mali. After a long period of one-party rule, a coup in 1991 led to the writing of a new constitution and the establishment of Mali as a democratic, multi-party state.

Another "lito vilovito" ("fairy summer") has come to a small Dalmatian town. One of them even has a steady local girlfriend whose name, as he says, "is not written on his pillar, but in his heart". There is, however, one of them who is an object of constant mocking, a shy romantic boy who flies in his own clouds and his pillar is still blank. This summer is going to be a little different for him, though.

Mali's rebel coalition said on Friday it was not ready to give preliminary approval to a United Nations-backed peace proposal a day after the government announced that it would. The statement on behalf of the Coordination of Azawad Movements is another setback for mediators and the Malian government, which have been urging Tuareg-led separatists to sign for weeks. It received initial approval from the government and another coalition of pro-government armed groups in early March. The negotiations aim to prevent future revolts by Tuareg-led insurgents who have risen up four times since Mali's independence in 1960. http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/Reuters/worldNews/~3/4R8iW1v3fd0/story01.htm http://www.wochit.com

In which John Green teaches you about one of the least funny subjects in history: slavery. John investigates when and where slavery originated, how it changed over the centuries, and how Europeans and colonists in the Americas arrived at the idea that people could own other people based on skin color. Slavery has existed as long as humans have had civilization, but the Atlantic Slave Trade was the height, or depth, of dehumanizing, brutal, chattel slavery. American slavery ended less than 150 years ago. In some parts of the world, it is still going on. So how do we reconcile that with modern life? In a desperate attempt at comic relief, Boba Fett makes an appearance. Crash Course World History is now available on DVD! http://store.dftba.com/products/crashcourse-world-history-the-complet...

One month into the French-led offensive in Mali, the newly liberated town of Douentza is inching its way back to normality. The markets once again bustle with life and music, and even cigarettes are once again on offer at the town's vibrant stalls. Music is of great social and political import in the desert state of Mali; yet it was contraband under the rigid sharia law implemented by the Islamist militants who controlled this town for ten long months, crushing a key aspect of Malian life and culture. Despite the improvements, tensions remain. Rigid military checkpoints remain in place, food is scarce, and people remain deeply suspicious of those they suspect of having worked with the Islamist rebels. Training midwives is a key action to improve maternal health and reduce infant mortality. In Mali, the EU is funding a large training programme operated by a partnership between the Malian, the French and the Moroccan Red Cross. As a result, in urban centres like Bamako, mothers tend to give birth in maternity wards with qualified midwives, instead of giving birth at home. As part of this EU-sponsored programme, the Malian Red Cross also train health professionals and encourage them to go and work in rural areas. Even in the suburbs of the capital Bamako, patients have benefited from such trainings, as nurses trained by the Red Cross now run small health centres.

Tuareg rebels fighting government troops in Mali's far northern desert have fired on an American military plane, Malian officials said Thursday. The attack occurred early Wednesday when the plane was delivering food to a Malian Army garrison at Tin-Zaouatene in a desolate mountain region bordering Algeria and Niger, where the rebels have staged raids in recent weeks. The United States Embassy in Mali said the aircraft returned safely here to the capital, after being hit by gunfire but denied a report by Malian officials that an American service member was wounded. "Shots were fired at the plane," an embassy spokesperson said. "It was resupply drop of food done to help our partner nation. There was minimal damage and they were able to successfully complete the mission." The United State...
Subscribe to our channel http://bit.ly/AJSubscribe There are indications coming out of Mali that government soldiers may be preparing for a major offensive to recapture the few remaining strongholds of the Tuareg fighters in Kidal, one of northern Mali's three largest cities. Sheikh Awssa, a co-founder of the Islamic Movement of Azawad, an armed group that controls Kidal, told Al Jazeera: "Our war is against Mali. We're not terrorists. But Mali would like to describe us as such and get the World to attack us in the name of the war on terrorism". Al Jazeera's Mohamed Vall reports from Kidal. At Al Jazeera English, we focus on people and events that affect people's lives. We bring topics to light that often go under-reported, listening to all sides of the story and giving a 'voice to the v...

Mali: An Invitation to Travel is a video documentary which presents a positive yet not uncritical introduction to the history, economics and culture of Mali. It aims to fill the void between the lack of information and the misinformation currently available about Africa in general and about Mali in particular. The project was initiated by members of MaliWatch (a group that promotes democracy and openness) including Abdoulaye Doucoure, Janet Goldner, Mohomoudou Houssouba, Boubacar Kane, Iba Ndiaye, and Bakary Sylla. It was produced and edited in Bamako with additional archival footage. A co-production of MaliWatch and CNCM (Le Centre National de la Cinématographie du Mali).

The Great Mosque of Djenné is a large banco or adobe building that is considered by many architects to be one of the greatest achievements of the Sudano-Sahelian architectural style. The mosque is located in the city of Djenné, Mali, on the flood plain of the Bani River. The first mosque on the site was built around the 13th century, but the current structure dates from 1907. As well as being the centre of the community of Djenné, it is one of the most famous landmarks in Africa. Along with the Old Towns of Djenné it was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988.
